Abstergo is a sole trader business participating in YES (the Young Enterprise Scheme) this year, from Aotea College in Porirua. About a year ago, I decided to make the switch to menstrual cups. I made this decision to not only save me money, but to be able to fully ditch single use menstrual products, which accounts for over 28,000 TONNES of waste each year. However, I've never been able to fully ditch single use menstrual products. As someone who is out and about constantly, and goes to school 5 days a week, sterilising my cup has been an issue. I’ve found that I’ve still had to carry disposable products around with me, because I never know if I’m going to get my period while I’m out, and want to stay clean and safe. While conducting market research, I found out that this wasn’t just me and that over 60% of people who use reusable menstrual products still have to carry disposable products.
Abstergo was founded to create a solution to these problems, and to promote period equity, with 10% of profits going to period equity groups. The Abstergo Steriliser has been designed to solve all problems to do with sterilising menstrual cups and discs. The Abstergo steriliser features a collapsible design, to make it easy to carry around with you in your busy life. For those at home, it is microwavable, and the lid doubles as a strainer, ensuring you can strain the hot water out, without the risk of burning yourself. Using the microwave method also ensures that your cup doesn’t get burnt either (which occurs a lot more than you would think). For people out and about, Abstergo would produce sterilisation tablets, which are environmentally friendly, come in recyclable packaging, and sterilise your cup quickly, without the need for heat. As of now, some brief product sketches have been created by me, and I have been in contact with a NZ based company that is happy to do professional design and development, and later down the line prototyping and manufacturing.
Your pledge would go into the professional design, development and prototyping, and if enough money is raised, that would go towards the first lot of unit costs. Pledging will get this project well up and running, and help us work towards a more sustainable, convenient, and equitable future.
