About

Let's Change The Future Of Taxes!

Project 2023-02-28 14:48:11 +1300

Tax Justice Aotearoa believes it is time to advocate more forcefully for meaningful change to New Zealand's tax system.

In 2023 we are joining with like-minded organisations and individuals to do just that, through a Tax campaign that needs your support.

Why does tax matter?

Tax is the bedrock for building a better future. We can't look after each other as a community without it. Tax is how we, as a nation, build and sustain a healthy, happy and resilient society.

It does that by building a tax revenue base that is sufficient to support much-needed improvements to our public health system, our nationwide infrastructure, schools, social assistance (including superannuation), and our response to the climate change crisis.

Why is tax important to the public good and our collective future?

We believe that a tax system that is equitable and transparent is essential to protecting and shaping the future of New Zealand.

Changes to tax policy are known to be a powerful way to reduce inequality and for safeguarding our environment.

We need to talk more about tax and the best possible mix of taxes for ensuring we have a tax system that best serves our communities.

For every issue that will be debated this Election year, an underpinning lever for achieving change is the tax system.

How can you make a difference?

This campaign will make it loud and clear to our nation's decision-makers and future Members of Parliament that the time for putting Tax reforms on the agenda for a positive future in Aoteraroa New Zealand is now!

Your donation to resourcing this campaign will enable the call for tax policy reforms to be heard as widely as possible in 2023.

Adding your pledge and your support to this campaign will help us to open up an informed conversation about taxes as a power for public good.

Your donation will go towards the costs of launching a website platform for hosting campaign activity, as well as creating digital and print resources about the public good role played by our tax system.

Great going! $1500 to reach or pass our Target by Sunday 14 May

09/05/2023 at 6:19 PM

The pledges to 'Let's change the future of taxes!' have grown to almost $8,500 - only $1500 to go!

Just today - at the same time as the latest extreme weather State of Emergency began to hit Auckland - Tax Justice Aotearoa hosted a public talk by Professors James Renwick and Ilan Noy on the role that better taxes can play towards being equipped to stand up to a future of environmental and climate change harm.

Journalist Simon Wilson also delivered a reminder in today's NZ Herald that a better tax system is fundamental to a resilient and well-functioning society.

Now is a great time to let colleagues, friends and family know about your support for this call to action, and that every $5 counts. Please keep spreading the word.

Ngā mihi nui!

Almost in the last week - $4000 to go!

03/05/2023 at 9:38 AM

Thank you for the support this week and for growing the awareness that better TAXES join the dots towards a better Aotearoa New Zealand and the fight for public good!

So many important connections need to be made between the future of tax and a fairer, better future for every sector.

Climate Club Aotearoa made the connection this week in this simple but compelling quote: "Tax justice is Climate justice".

Let's change the Future of Taxes: An update with 17 days to go

27/04/2023 at 4:56 PM

Kia ora from Tax Justice Aotearoa - with a big thank you for the Pledges that have taken us to 26.5% of our PledgeMe target.

Over the last week the compelling need for a serious Tax debate in New Zealand has been rising fast, and your contribution to this PledgeMe campaign will help to turn up the heat.

Just yesterday Revenue Minister David Parker was able to deliver IRD's report with data and supporting information for a truly informed debate.

For the first time the tax gap between the most wealthy New Zealanders and ordinary income earners is on the record, and its too BIG to sweep under a carpet!

The takeaway from this would be depressing (see the response from world-renowned economist Thomas Piketty below) if we just sat back and did nothing to advocate for commitments to rigorous tax reform.

A Pledge to this PledgeMe campaign is a pledge for advocacy. It's a way to let our future leaders and politicians know that taking no action to achieve a Fairer Tax system is unacceptable. The time for a call to action for the long-term public good is now!

We've got 17 days to go. Please pass this call to action on.

Thank you again. Ngā mihi nui.

Kia ora from Tax Justice Aotearoa with a big thank you to the 12 Pledgers for this project (so far).

With four weeks to go on our PledgeMe fundraiser you've nudged us up to the $1400 mark as we progressively move towards the $10,000 goal. Please let friends and colleagues know about your pledge, and please ask them to consider adding to the total.

Tomorrow, Friday 14 April, it will be exactly six months out from Election Day 14 October 2023.

The countdown on the issues that will dominate this Election year will soon be hotting up. Each and every Pledge will assist our campaign to put the Future of Tax and a fairer tax system up where it belongs: At the top of the agenda.

Ngā mihi nui.
