About

Memeopoly

Project 2013-01-16 06:55:17 +1300

Memeopoly is a fun social drinking game which is quick to learn and easy to play. With a massive variety of challenges and drinking rules, this game is never the same. Drawing inspiration from many other drinking games including Circle of Death, Kings and 4chan Drinking Game, Memeopoly is designed to be accessible to all levels of players and the casual gamer or drinker. The object of the game is simply to have fun with your friends and enjoy some drinks.

The game consists of a deck of cards, every card is full colour on each side, and every card is unique. Each card has a different drinking rule, command or activity for the player to complete. Memeopoly is currently available in two separate decks (so 104 unique cards) which can be combined together for longer games or games with greater variety.

(Go right here, to see some of the cards.)

My name is William Stewart, I'm a Freelance Graphic Designer/Web Developer and I’ve been spent the last three years play testing, developing and tweaking this game to make it the best I possibly can. I've had a lot of help from my friends along the way and made new ones through play testing and working on game flow, card balance, consistency and style. Basically we've been trying to make this the best drinking game possible.

I've been self publishing the game and selling it to friends, on Trademe, at the Armageddon Expo, and more recently at the online store Mightyape. I’ve also sold copies to people in Australia, UK and Canada through our fan page on Facebook. Currently we've sold about 100 copies of the game, and have sold out of copies at the last three Armageddons. At the moment the project is self funded and any income is reinvested into further development and printing. At the moment I am able to completely produce the finished product, which means this isn't a theoretical product but something I can put into a backers hand at any stage in the funding, so there is no risk for the backer.

The reason I need your help is so I can take this game to the next level. Rather than the 10x units I’ve been producing at a time, I want to fund a bulk print run. The other primary money requirement is for packaging. At the moment I’m buying precut boxes, sticking labels on them and packaging the game that way. With your help, I could have my own box designed for the game, one which fits perfectly, is long lasting and wearing and keeps your cards safe and accessible. I could have it printed in the factory, freeing me up from hand assembling the boxes and giving me more time to work on Memeopoly.

My $500 target is to allow me to to do a bigger production run and to start down the road of getting specifically designed packaging for the game, getting quotes and prototypes to start production.

With $1000+, we could afford some advertising, sending out sample copies to retail channels, we could get some artwork commissioned to put our on art on cards.

With more, it would let me get the game mass produced and with specific packaging designed and printed for the game and also assist me in creating further content for the game such as Deck C, expansions and other game projects

If you want to know anything more about the game, check out our website. You can see how it works, you can try the cards and even download a print and play version of the game for free, as well as read all about the project.

Also please take a look there to see how else you can help!

Depending on what you pledge, you will get the listed rewards, as well as the moral satisfaction of knowing you helped an awesome project get off the ground and helped people have way more fun playing drinking games. We'll even make it better. If we go over our funding target, we'll start unlocking reward tiers, more free stuff for no extra money, see below.

(larger image)

Now it doesn't just stop there. I've tried to pack in as much value to these pledge levels as I can while still raising money for the project, but if we do really well, the rewards will get better. So basically, when we raise $1500, everyone that is getting a copy of the game ($30+ level) will also get a free copy of the Stadium expansion. If we raise over $2000, then everyone will also get a copy of the Spacestation Mini deck, for free!

This is a way I can make sure that I'm rewarding you for helping this project succeed, there are real tangible benefits to you to help us promote this project to your friends so that we can get to these levels, and it means as the costs for product decreases due to a higher quantity, I can take that extra money and turn it into making something even better for you guys.

Oh yeah, do you think 1.5k is too high to wait for the first stretch goal? Let me know! If enough people are keen, I have a few ideas for something I can fit in at the 1k mark.

FAQ
When will we get our stuff?
After this campaign ends in March, I will start processing the orders and sent the job through to the printers and put everything together. You will receive any physical products within one month of this campaign ending. You will receive any currently available digital products within two weeks of the campaign ending. For anyone expecting Deck C, Deck C is currently in development. If the funding goal is reached, I will get Deck C finished and printed within 2-3 months of the campaign ending.

Why are you charging $30? I bought a copy of this for $25 last year?
The previous copies that were sold for $25 did not include shipping, that's the main answer. Mightyape also has had the game on special at times for around $25, but with this, shipping was extra too. Also we have fancy things like boxes and rule brochures that we didn't used to have which raise the price cost price a little, but we're still doing them for you for around the same price.

Then why buy it through Pledgeme? Why not just buy it off Mightyape or at Armageddon?
Because while I want to support my retail partners, I really need to increase awareness of this game and the customer base to take this any further and this is the best way to start. By contributing to this campaign, you help me achieve that, you encourage others to invest in the product and I'm giving away a bunch of swag for people that help me get the word out there and if we reach our stretch goals.

DRINKING GAMES ARE BAD!
Please read our post about this here.

But I don't live in New Zealand!
That's ok, we can ship overseas, in most cases international shipping is only $10 extra. Just message [email protected] for a exact price or just pledge and we'll sort you out later.

Well, we didn't reach the target on here, but we've still done a pretty good job at raising awareness of the game, and thanks to copies sold at Armageddon, we've made enough to start exploring some of the other stuff I want to do like art and expansions.

I hope to produce some of the mini expansions in the next month or so - it will be available to current owners of Memeopoly at cost for a limited time - somewhere around the $5 mark. I'll also be trying to finish Deck C in the next 6months.

For those of you who really like the game and wanted a copy for yourself, you can get it from Verboom's store here: http://willu.net/verboom/shop/memeopoly/

It's  $30 including shipping, and they're doing a deal on both decks for $50. If you put a note in the order, you will also receive a free Memeopoly badge - just say something like "give me the free badge".

Thanks to everyone for all the support and help with sharing this, it's been a really fun experiment!

Pledgeme Campaign update

14/03/2013 at 10:37 AM

Wow, what a busy week. Ok, so at the moment it
looks like we won't be meeting our Pledgeme goal of $500, at the moment
we're sitting on $90. Now that's not a big deal, because we pretty much
raised $400 just from selling the game at Armageddon Expos - so we
still are going to be able to achieve some of our financial goals.

It's pretty clear that the problem isn't so much our project, but just the
lack of recognition pledgeme has, and the difficulty of getting the
word out there about this game without advertising dollers and a
publishing deal. If we can sell oodles of copies just from having the
game available at a few trade shows (and I mean sitting on a table, not
even active promotion) than it's definitely something people want and
value.

We're going to go forward with making Deck C in the next
6 months (I'd love to do it faster, but unfortunately I have a real job
to consider) and we'll also do some of the planned expansions and make
them available for existing owners of the game at cost.

If we do manage to hit the goal on pledgeme, then awesome, otherwise if you wanted to get a copy of the game and now you can't, you will be able to do so through our website after the campaign ends.
