Japan's acclaimed taiko drum ensemble Kodo has been touring the globe for over four decades, on a mission to connect and uplift people with soul-stirring performances centred around taiko—Japanese drums.
It's time to share Kodo's story with the world in English at long last!
Kodo is a pioneer and world leader in taiko performing arts. To mark its 30th anniversary in 2011, Kodo published a book to capture its inception and remarkable journey to date, including its antecedent group Sado no Kuni Ondekoza in the 1970s. From an overview of the group’s origin and history to interviews with Kodo members, collaborators, and ardent supporters, this book offers unprecedented insights into the world of Kodo. It’s a chance to learn about the group like never before, from the ensemble’s evolving stage expression to the member’s daily lives and personal experiences.
Published in Japanese only, this story has only reached Japanese readers…until now. With your support, certified Japanese-English translator Melanie Taylor, a long-term Kodo colleague with in depth knowledge about Kodo, taiko, Japan, and Sado Island where the group is based, wants to make this story accessible to the world at long last. By translating this book into English, Melanie wants to give Kodo’s global audience, especially the ever-expanding taiko community, a chance to learn more about the ensemble’s unique past from the source. This book will give taiko enthusiasts a chance to learn more about Kodo from Kodo. It’s a story that will undoubtedly offer inspiration to anyone who wants to launch a mission, organization, or passion project.

There's less than one hour to go.
My heart is full of gratitude to each and every one of you.
The next two pages are from the 2008 year book. It's an article I wrote about my first overseas tour with Kodo in Europe. I took the photos and wrote the English, and Chieko Wales—who helped with Japanese translation and subtitling throughout this campaign—translated my words into Japanese.I still love the song I quoted in the year book. I'm sure no one at Kodo at the time knew that song.

あと1時間を切りましたね。 お一人お一人に、感謝の気持ちで胸がいっぱいです。 昨日、私が入社した頃の鼓童のイヤーブックを見てみました。毎年出ていたもので、日本語だけのもの、日本語と英語のものがあります。写真もたくさん載っていて、ファンとして眺めるのが好きでした。それは今も変わりません。
多くのものがお蔵入りしているにもかかわらず、2007年から2009年のものは私の机の近くにあります。集合写真は、2007年、佐渡での初めての夏、アース・セレブレーションの直前に撮ったものです。鼓童では毎年、別れと迎えがあるのですが、その時その場にいた人を記録するこの集合写真は、いつも大好きです。 今回のクラウドファンディングを応援してくれたメンバー、支えてくれたメンバーを記録するために、最新の集合写真を英訳版のサポーター限定版に掲載することにします。 次の2ページは、2008年のイヤーブックからです。鼓童のヨーロッパでの初めての海外ツアーについて書いた記事です。私が写真を撮り、英語を書き、このキャンペーンで日本語の翻訳と字幕を担当してくれたウェルズ智恵子さんが私の言葉を和訳してくださいました。 イヤーブックで引用した歌は今でも大好きです。当時の鼓童では、この歌を知っている人はいなかったと思います。 「自分が与えたものしか得られない。」 皆さん、たくさん与えていただきありがとうございます。 私は、鼓童の最初の30年の物語に世界中の人々がアクセスできるようになることをとても楽しみにしています。鼓童のビートは続きます。

We did it!!! I went to bed at 2am and we were 91% funded. I woke up and we had hit 100%.
Thank you all so much for all the cheering and encouragement overnight around the world.
With 8 hours to go, we just reached the 103% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 296 supporters. I am truly grateful to each and everyone of you.
I've had a lot of people saying they would like me to extend the campaign because:
1. They thought it ended in November not today (April 11), since 11/4 means November 4 in the US. They need more time to check with their group about making a group pledge.
2. They are still spreading the word to people not on social media who they don't want to miss the chance to support this book and receive a Supporters Limited Edition.
3. Some senior citizens and non-English speakers are panicking last minute that they want to pledge but can't figure out the website.
The lovely team at PledgeMe has agreed to extend this campaign for 48 hours to allow more time to people who want to support this project, and perhaps have their name/logo in the book and receive the Supporters Limited Edition. There will be no extensions after that.
I won't be pushing the campaign anymore. It's been a very long campaign and now it's time for me to catch up on rest and my translation work.
So please think of this as a quiet extension for those who want to be part of this project and just needed a little more time.

キャンペーンを延長してほしいという声をたくさんいただいています。その理由は主に：

Today I want to share the breakdown of how the funds will be used. These figures are tax inclusive.
I know some people wonder why it costs so much to translate a book. The simple answer is that translation is a professional service.
I'm a NAATI Certified Translator, and my work will be reviewed and checked by a fellow NAATI Certified Translator, Meagan Sneddon. We studied translation and interpreting together at Monash University, and we've collaborated on a range of projects since becoming freelancers. We will do our very best to bring you a translation that you can trust.
I'll also be working with an English-only proofreader, a graphic designer for the cover, and a book layout specialist for the formatting. 
Not everyone who has a pair of scissors makes a good hairdresser, right? In the same way, not everyone who speaks two languages makes a good translator. Kodo and the publisher of the original book trust me to translate this book and they are cheering me on.
There's only 4 days to go, and there's still a long way to go. But we are getting closer and closer to the goal, thanks to you.

Hi, everyone!
With 2 weeks to go, we just reached the 31% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 110 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project.
Today I'd like to share a map of where the pledges to date have come from. I am so grateful for all the support to date from near and far. I only know the countries for the names I recognise, and the people who have contacted me. For the people I don't know yet, and the anonymous ones, I have no idea.

Something some of you already know about me is that I love documentaries and biographies. Going behind the scenes and learning more about famous people and my favourite artists. When I first moved to Sado Island in 2007 to work with Kodo, I lived at Kodo Village in the dormitory for newcomers. I remember sitting by the fireplace at night, reading "Scar Tissue": the biography of Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis. I was so engrossed in it. I recall one of the young Kodo members Masayuki Sakamoto's voice saying "Lucky you, Melanie." Every day. He was jealous because it wasn't available in Japanese. "Is it good?" "Is it really good?" He knew he was missing out and I really felt for him. I absolutely love that band and I really enjoyed that book, but we couldn't geek out and discuss it together. I know there are people around the world who want to get their hands on Kodo's story in English just like rock fan Masayuki wanted to read the RCHP stories. We all want to have a chance to learn more about our favourite people and groups. I am excited to give people who access to Kodo's story in English, too.

Hi, everyone!
With 3 weeks to go, we just reached the 24% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 99 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project.
Today, I want to share with you where I got the idea to offer backers a chance to have their name and logo in this book. When I worked at Kodo Village on Sado Island, every day I would walk past a display of supporter plaques to enter and leave the main office building. It features the names, signatures, messages, and even hand and footprints of people who gave donations in 1985 to help Kodo build Kodo Village. Even now, when I visit Kodo, I stop and read those names. Each time, I know a few more, thanks to making new connections through concerts, taiko events, and social media. It takes a village to launch a massive project. Kodo has a village, and is reminded of the support that made that possible every day. In this book, all along I’ve wanted to have a section where people can have their name, and group’s logo, and show their support forever in a similar way. 
While it’s not a tier perk, I’ll also have a section called “In Loving Memory of,” where we (you, Kodo, and I) can dedicate this English translation to members of the taiko community who are no longer with us. Like the plaques at Kodo Village, there is very limited space, so I’ll keep that for people who we know that supported Kodo. Please get in touch if you’d like to include a name in this section. On Saturday, it was two years since Kodo colleague and friend Takashi Akamine passed away. This Saturday, it will be two years since my mum passed away. So this post comes at a time of remembrance and deep gratitude for special, special people.
I’m encouraged by all the support and kind words that come in every day. And the lingering voices of Takashi and Mum in my ears… “You can do it, Mel!” Let’s make this happen together.

残り３週間ですが、先ほど資金調達が24%に達しました。最初の99人のサポーター、そしてこのプロジェクトにシェアしてくださっている皆さん、本当にありがとうございます。
今日は、この本に自分の名前とロゴを掲載する機会を提供することを思いついたきっかけについてお話したいと思います。私が佐渡島にある鼓童村で働いていたとき、毎日、事務所の建物に出入りするとき、サポーター銘板のディスプレイの前を通りました。そこには、1985年に鼓童の「鼓童村」建設のために寄付をしてくださった方々の名前、サイン、メッセージ、そして手や足跡までが記されています。今でも鼓童を訪れると、立ち止まってその名前を読みます。コンサートや太鼓のイベント、ソーシャルメディアを通じての新しいつながりのおかげで、毎回、数人の知り合いが増えています。巨大なプロジェクトを立ち上げるには、英語では「村が必要だ」(何かを成し遂げるにはいろんな人の協力が必要だ」)というフレースをよく言います。鼓童には村があり、それを可能にしたサポートに日々気づかされる名簿があります。この本でも、同じように自分の名前やグループのロゴを入れて、いつまでも応援してもらえるようなコーナーを設けたいとずっと思っていました。
また、「特典」ではありませんが、「In Loving Memory of」(～の愛しき思い出に)というコーナーも設け、私たち（あなた、鼓童、そして私）は、この訳書をこの世にはもういらっしゃらない太鼓コミュニティのメンバーに捧げたいと思います。鼓童の村の銘板と同じように、スペースが限られているので、鼓童を応援してくださった知り合いの方々のためにしておこうと思います。このコーナーにお名前を載せたい方はご連絡ください。先週末の土曜日は、鼓童の同僚と友人の赤嶺隆さんの三回忌でした。今週の土曜日は、私の母が亡くなって2年です。今週は、大切で特別な人たちに対する追悼と深い感謝の気持ちが溢れる１週間です。

We just reached the 20% funded mark. 🥳 🥳 🥳 Thank you so much to the first 85 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project.
This book has 5 chapters, so I'll mention one chapter for each 20% funded.
The first chapter is "Origins." It talks about the beginnings and story of Sado no Kuni Ondekoza, the transition from Sado no Kuni Ondekoza to Kodo, and Kodo's first ten years.
I've just added perks for Gold and Platinum to offer more to groups and organisations who pledge in this category.
These will be for all current and future pledges.
I've also added visuals for each tier so you can see the difference. You can see them on the campaign page, and also on the South Paw Translation Facebook page.

第1章は 「原点」です。佐渡の國変遷 鬼太鼓座の始まりと物語、渡の國 鬼太鼓座から鼓童への移行、そして鼓童の最初の10年間について書かれています。
先ほどゴールドとプラチナに特典を追加しました。このカテゴリーにご登録いただいた団体や組織への特典をもっと提供したかったです。
現在、そしてこれからの寄付約束者にも適用されます。

It's Day 22 of this crowdfunding campaign. We are edging closer and closer to the day that I can share Kodo's story with the world in English. It's all thanks to the first 59 supporters, and everyone spreading the word about this project. Thank you, everyone!

While I am really encouraged, I also know that the current pace, we won't get there in time. It's an all-or-nothing campaign... because translating 15% of a book wouldn't be a satisfying read, right?

Great question! I'm working this out now. I'll be adding some perks for gold and platinum supporters soon to make them more appealing and fair for groups/organisations. (This weekend!) However, with these tiers, it's more about offering more support, and having a chance to put your group's logo in the book (not something that was possible for the Japanese one) to show your support. If you just want to support this project and get your own e-book in return, please check out Bronze and Silver.
3. Do you have more information in English about the original Japanese book?
This is all the English info that Kodo shared about the Japanese book when it was published in 2011: https://www.kodo.or.jp/news/20110607book_en.html I doubt you'll find much more in English about the book before it is translated into English. If you have any questions about the book, feel free to ask.
4. If you don't reach your target, what will happen? Will you still translate the book?
If I reach the target, I'll block my schedule and work to translate the book within one year. Everyone will know the book is on its way, all thanks to their support. It will be a priority.
If I don't reach the target, I will cry. Then I will have to shift focus to other paid work for the year ahead. If I translate the book without funding, it will be at a snail pace, around my paid work (I have to make a living, too). Who knows how many years it will take or how much I'll need to sell it for. It's not a situation I want to think about. So I'll just focus on gathering the support this project needs to make it happen now.
I'm looking forward to hearing from everyone who is helping make this story accessible in English, and how many people in how many countries are involved.

もし、目標に届かなかったら、泣きますよ。そうしたら、この1年間は、他の有給の仕事にフォーカスをシフトしなければなりません。もし、資金を得ずに翻訳をするのであれば、私の有給の仕事と並行して、カタツムリのようなペースで進めることになるでしょう（稼がないと生活ができないので）。その場合、どれだけの年数がかかるか、いくらで売る必要があるかわかりません。そんなことは考えたくもないです。そのため、このプロジェクトをいま実現させるように必要な支援を集めることに集中することにします。
この物語を英語で読めるようにするために、何カ国の方々が関わっているのか、みんなの声を聞くのが楽しみです。
今、ノートに寄付者の名前と、私が知っているサポーターの国を書き加えているところです。本当にありがとうございます。毎日このノートを読みながら、一人一人に個人的にお礼を言っています。

Japan's acclaimed taiko drum ensemble Kodo has been touring the globe for over four decades, on a mission to connect and uplift people with soul-stirring performances centred around taiko—Japanese drums.
It's time to share Kodo's story with the world in English at long last!
Kodo is a pioneer and world leader in taiko performing arts. To mark its 30th anniversary in 2011, Kodo published a book to capture its inception and remarkable journey to date, including its antecedent group Sado no Kuni Ondekoza in the 1970s. From an overview of the group’s origin and history to interviews with Kodo members, collaborators, and ardent supporters, this book offers unprecedented insights into the world of Kodo. It’s a chance to learn about the group like never before, from the ensemble’s evolving stage expression to the member’s daily lives and personal experiences.
Published in Japanese only, this story has only reached Japanese readers…until now. With your support, certified Japanese-English translator Melanie Taylor, a long-term Kodo colleague with in depth knowledge about Kodo, taiko, Japan, and Sado Island where the group is based, wants to make this story accessible to the world at long last. By translating this book into English, Melanie wants to give Kodo’s global audience, especially the ever-expanding taiko community, a chance to learn more about the ensemble’s unique past from the source. This book will give taiko enthusiasts a chance to learn more about Kodo from Kodo. It’s a story that will undoubtedly offer inspiration to anyone who wants to launch a mission, organization, or passion project.

翻訳者より 「日英翻訳者のメラニー・テイラーです。2007年から太鼓芸能集団「鼓童」と仕事をしています。2011年に、鼓童の30年とその誕生までの歴史をまとめた『いのちもやして、たたけよ。』（"Drum Your Heart Out!"と訳しています）が出版されたとき、私は鼓童の事務所でその編集作業をみていました。この本が英語でも書かれていたら、よりたくさんの方々に共有できるとずっと思っていました。 鼓童の歴史は舞台芸能としての太鼓表現の歴史の大切な一部でもあります。太鼓は音楽のアクティビティだけでなく、コミュニティの中で大切な存在であり、人々を繋ぐ役割があります。これを世界に伝えるために翻訳したいです。この本を通じて、鼓童の歴史、鼓童村、鼓童の使命のエッセンスを世界中の人々に伝えたいです。 このクラウドファンディングを通じて、鼓童の声と物語を世界に発信していきたいと思っています。これは鼓童への貢献でもあり、世界の太鼓コミュニティのためにもなると思います。ぜひ一緒に実現させてください。」

There's less than one hour to go.
My heart is full of gratitude to each and every one of you.
The next two pages are from the 2008 year book. It's an article I wrote about my first overseas tour with Kodo in Europe. I took the photos and wrote the English, and Chieko Wales—who helped with Japanese translation and subtitling throughout this campaign—translated my words into Japanese.I still love the song I quoted in the year book. I'm sure no one at Kodo at the time knew that song.

あと1時間を切りましたね。 お一人お一人に、感謝の気持ちで胸がいっぱいです。 昨日、私が入社した頃の鼓童のイヤーブックを見てみました。毎年出ていたもので、日本語だけのもの、日本語と英語のものがあります。写真もたくさん載っていて、ファンとして眺めるのが好きでした。それは今も変わりません。
多くのものがお蔵入りしているにもかかわらず、2007年から2009年のものは私の机の近くにあります。集合写真は、2007年、佐渡での初めての夏、アース・セレブレーションの直前に撮ったものです。鼓童では毎年、別れと迎えがあるのですが、その時その場にいた人を記録するこの集合写真は、いつも大好きです。 今回のクラウドファンディングを応援してくれたメンバー、支えてくれたメンバーを記録するために、最新の集合写真を英訳版のサポーター限定版に掲載することにします。 次の2ページは、2008年のイヤーブックからです。鼓童のヨーロッパでの初めての海外ツアーについて書いた記事です。私が写真を撮り、英語を書き、このキャンペーンで日本語の翻訳と字幕を担当してくれたウェルズ智恵子さんが私の言葉を和訳してくださいました。 イヤーブックで引用した歌は今でも大好きです。当時の鼓童では、この歌を知っている人はいなかったと思います。 「自分が与えたものしか得られない。」 皆さん、たくさん与えていただきありがとうございます。 私は、鼓童の最初の30年の物語に世界中の人々がアクセスできるようになることをとても楽しみにしています。鼓童のビートは続きます。

We did it!!! I went to bed at 2am and we were 91% funded. I woke up and we had hit 100%.
Thank you all so much for all the cheering and encouragement overnight around the world.
With 8 hours to go, we just reached the 103% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 296 supporters. I am truly grateful to each and everyone of you.
I've had a lot of people saying they would like me to extend the campaign because:
1. They thought it ended in November not today (April 11), since 11/4 means November 4 in the US. They need more time to check with their group about making a group pledge.
2. They are still spreading the word to people not on social media who they don't want to miss the chance to support this book and receive a Supporters Limited Edition.
3. Some senior citizens and non-English speakers are panicking last minute that they want to pledge but can't figure out the website.
The lovely team at PledgeMe has agreed to extend this campaign for 48 hours to allow more time to people who want to support this project, and perhaps have their name/logo in the book and receive the Supporters Limited Edition. There will be no extensions after that.
I won't be pushing the campaign anymore. It's been a very long campaign and now it's time for me to catch up on rest and my translation work.
So please think of this as a quiet extension for those who want to be part of this project and just needed a little more time.

目標達成しましたよ！！！ 午前2時に寝ましたが、目標達成率は91％でした。目が覚めたら、100％を達成していました。
一晩中、世界中からの応援と励ましを本当にありがとうございました。
残り8時間で、私たちは103％の資金調達に到達したところです。最初の296人のサポーターの方々、本当にありがとうございました。皆さん一人ひとりに本当に感謝しています。
キャンペーンを延長してほしいという声をたくさんいただいています。その理由は主に：
1. 11/4はアメリカでは11月4日なので、今日（4月11日）ではなく、11月に終了すると思っていたようです。グループで寄付する前にグループメンバーに確認をとる時間がもっと必要です。
2. ソーシャルメディアを利用していない人たちに、この本を支援し、サポーター限定版を受け取るチャンスを逃したくないということで、まだ情報を拡散しているそうです。
3. シニアの方や英語ができない方で、「寄付したいしたいけど、ウェブサイトがわからない」と直前になって慌てている方もいらっしゃいます。

Today I want to share the breakdown of how the funds will be used. These figures are tax inclusive.
I know some people wonder why it costs so much to translate a book. The simple answer is that translation is a professional service.
I'm a NAATI Certified Translator, and my work will be reviewed and checked by a fellow NAATI Certified Translator, Meagan Sneddon. We studied translation and interpreting together at Monash University, and we've collaborated on a range of projects since becoming freelancers. We will do our very best to bring you a translation that you can trust.
I'll also be working with an English-only proofreader, a graphic designer for the cover, and a book layout specialist for the formatting.
Not everyone who has a pair of scissors makes a good hairdresser, right? In the same way, not everyone who speaks two languages makes a good translator. Kodo and the publisher of the original book trust me to translate this book and they are cheering me on.

Crowdfunding Campaign Update
Hi, everyone!
With 2 weeks to go, we just reached the 31% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 110 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project.
Today I'd like to share a map of where the pledges to date have come from. I am so grateful for all the support to date from near and far. I only know the countries for the names I recognise, and the people who have contacted me. For the people I don't know yet, and the anonymous ones, I have no idea.

Something some of you already know about me is that I love documentaries and biographies. Going behind the scenes and learning more about famous people and my favourite artists. When I first moved to Sado Island in 2007 to work with Kodo, I lived at Kodo Village in the dormitory for newcomers. I remember sitting by the fireplace at night, reading "Scar Tissue": the biography of Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis. I was so engrossed in it. I recall one of the young Kodo members Masayuki Sakamoto's voice saying "Lucky you, Melanie." Every day. He was jealous because it wasn't available in Japanese. "Is it good?" "Is it really good?" He knew he was missing out and I really felt for him. I absolutely love that band and I really enjoyed that book, but we couldn't geek out and discuss it together. I know there are people around the world who want to get their hands on Kodo's story in English just like rock fan Masayuki wanted to read the RCHP stories. We all want to have a chance to learn more about our favourite people and groups. I am excited to give people who access to Kodo's story in English, too.

みなさん、こんにちは！
残り2週間ですが、今日資金調達が31%に達しました。最初の110人のサポーター、そしてこのプロジェクトにシェアしてくださっている皆さん、本当にありがとうございます。
今日は、今までに寄せられた寄付約束者の国々について、地図でご紹介したいと思います。遠くから、近くから、たくさんのご支援をいただき、本当にありがとうございます。私が把握できている国々は、知っている方達の国と私に連絡をくれた人たちの国だけです。まだ知らない人たちや、匿名の人たちについては、まったくわかりません。

すでにご存知の方もいらっしゃると思いますが私はドキュメンタリーや伝記が大好きです。有名人や好きなアーティストの舞台裏を知ることができます。鼓童と働くために佐渡島に引っ越した当初の2007年は、鼓童村の新人の寮に住んでいました。夜、暖炉のそばに座って、レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズ(RHCP)のボーカル、アンソニー・キーディスの伝記「Scar Tissue」を読んでいたのを覚えています。あの本に夢中でした。鼓童の若手プレイヤー 坂本雅幸さんが 「いいな、メラニー」と毎日言っていたのが印象に残っています。日本語版がなくて読めなくて羨ましかったそうでした。彼は自分が損をしていることを知っていて、私は本当に同情しました。私はそのバンドが大好きで、その本も本当に面白かったですが、一緒に盛り上がることはできませんでした。ロックファンの雅幸さんがRCHPの物語を読みたいと思っていたように、鼓童の物語を英語で手に入れたいと思う人は世界中にいますね。私たちは皆、自分の好きな人やグループについてもっと知る機会を持ちたいと願っています。そんな人たちに、鼓童の物語の英語版を届けられる日がとても楽しみです。

Crowdfunding Campaign Update
Hi, everyone!
With 3 weeks to go, we just reached the 24% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 99 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project.
Today, I want to share with you where I got the idea to offer backers a chance to have their name and logo in this book. When I worked at Kodo Village on Sado Island, every day I would walk past a display of supporter plaques to enter and leave the main office building. It features the names, signatures, messages, and even hand and footprints of people who gave donations in 1985 to help Kodo build Kodo Village. Even now, when I visit Kodo, I stop and read those names. Each time, I know a few more, thanks to making new connections through concerts, taiko events, and social media. It takes a village to launch a massive project. Kodo has a village, and is reminded of the support that made that possible every day. In this book, all along I’ve wanted to have a section where people can have their name, and group’s logo, and show their support forever in a similar way.
While it’s not a tier perk, I’ll also have a section called “In Loving Memory of,” where we (you, Kodo, and I) can dedicate this English translation to members of the taiko community who are no longer with us. Like the plaques at Kodo Village, there is very limited space, so I’ll keep that for people who we know that supported Kodo. Please get in touch if you’d like to include a name in this section. On Saturday, it was two years since Kodo colleague and friend Takashi Akamine passed away. This Saturday, it will be two years since my mum passed away. So this post comes at a time of remembrance and deep gratitude for special, special people.
I’m encouraged by all the support and kind words that come in every day. And the lingering voices of Takashi and Mum in my ears… “You can do it, Mel!” Let’s make this happen together.

みなさん、こんにちは！
残り３週間ですが、先ほど資金調達が24%に達しました。最初の99人のサポーター、そしてこのプロジェクトにシェアしてくださっている皆さん、本当にありがとうございます。
今日は、この本に自分の名前とロゴを掲載する機会を提供することを思いついたきっかけについてお話したいと思います。私が佐渡島にある鼓童村で働いていたとき、毎日、事務所の建物に出入りするとき、サポーター銘板のディスプレイの前を通りました。そこには、1985年に鼓童の「鼓童村」建設のために寄付をしてくださった方々の名前、サイン、メッセージ、そして手や足跡までが記されています。今でも鼓童を訪れると、立ち止まってその名前を読みます。コンサートや太鼓のイベント、ソーシャルメディアを通じての新しいつながりのおかげで、毎回、数人の知り合いが増えています。巨大なプロジェクトを立ち上げるには、英語では「村が必要だ」(何かを成し遂げるにはいろんな人の協力が必要だ」)というフレースをよく言います。鼓童には村があり、それを可能にしたサポートに日々気づかされる名簿があります。この本でも、同じように自分の名前やグループのロゴを入れて、いつまでも応援してもらえるようなコーナーを設けたいとずっと思っていました。
また、「特典」ではありませんが、「In Loving Memory of」(～の愛しき思い出に)というコーナーも設け、私たち（あなた、鼓童、そして私）は、この訳書をこの世にはもういらっしゃらない太鼓コミュニティのメンバーに捧げたいと思います。鼓童の村の銘板と同じように、スペースが限られているので、鼓童を応援してくださった知り合いの方々のためにしておこうと思います。このコーナーにお名前を載せたい方はご連絡ください。先週末の土曜日は、鼓童の同僚と友人の赤嶺隆さんの三回忌でした。今週の土曜日は、私の母が亡くなって2年です。今週は、大切で特別な人たちに対する追悼と深い感謝の気持ちが溢れる１週間です。
毎日寄せられるサポートや優しい言葉に励まされています。そして、私の耳に残る隆さんと母の声にも... 「You can do it, Mel!」（あなたならできるよ、メル！）一緒に実現させましょう。

Hi, everyone!
We just reached the 20% funded mark. 🥳 🥳 🥳 Thank you so much to the first 85 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project.
This book has 5 chapters, so I'll mention one chapter for each 20% funded.
The first chapter is "Origins." It talks about the beginnings and story of Sado no Kuni Ondekoza, the transition from Sado no Kuni Ondekoza to Kodo, and Kodo's first ten years.
I've just added perks for Gold and Platinum to offer more to groups and organisations who pledge in this category.
These will be for all current and future pledges.
I've also added visuals for each tier so you can see the difference. You can see them on the campaign page, and also on the South Paw Translation Facebook page.

本書は5章構成になっていますので、20％の資金が集まるごとに1章ずつ紹介していきます。
第1章は 「原点」です。佐渡の國変遷 鬼太鼓座の始まりと物語、渡の國 鬼太鼓座から鼓童への移行、そして鼓童の最初の10年間について書かれています。
先ほどゴールドとプラチナに特典を追加しました。このカテゴリーにご登録いただいた団体や組織への特典をもっと提供したかったです。
現在、そしてこれからの寄付約束者にも適用されます。
また、各階層のビジュアルを追加しました。違いが見てわかるようにしてみたかったです。各特典はキャンペーンサイトとSouth Paw Translationのフェイスブックページにあります。

It's Day 22 of this crowdfunding campaign. We are edging closer and closer to the day that I can share Kodo's story with the world in English. It's all thanks to the first 59 supporters, and everyone spreading the word about this project. Thank you, everyone!

While I am really encouraged, I also know that the current pace, we won't get there in time. It's an all-or-nothing campaign... because translating 15% of a book wouldn't be a satisfying read, right?
If you can share this campaign page and video with your friends, family, and colleagues, I'd really appreciate it.

1. I can't understand how to pledge. Help!
We now have a video in Japanese explaining how to use the PledgeMe website. It's included in this update. Huge shoutout to Ami Murashita for making this. A PDF instruction sheet is coming soon. (This weekend!)

2. If we donate as a group to Gold or Platinum, do we get more e-books?
Great question! I'm working this out now. I'll be adding some perks for gold and platinum supporters soon to make them more appealing and fair for groups/organisations. (This weekend!) However, with these tiers, it's more about offering more support, and having a chance to put your group's logo in the book (not something that was possible for the Japanese one) to show your support. If you just want to support this project and get your own e-book in return, please check out Bronze and Silver.
3. Do you have more information in English about the original Japanese book?
This is all the English info that Kodo shared about the Japanese book when it was published in 2011: https://www.kodo.or.jp/news/20110607book_en.html I doubt you'll find much more in English about the book before it is translated into English. If you have any questions about the book, feel free to ask.
4. If you don't reach your target, what will happen? Will you still translate the book?
If I reach the target, I'll block my schedule and work to translate the book within one year. Everyone will know the book is on its way, all thanks to their support. It will be a priority.
If I don't reach the target, I will cry. Then I will have to shift focus to other paid work for the year ahead. If I translate the book without funding, it will be at a snail pace, around my paid work (I have to make a living, too). Who knows how many years it will take or how much I'll need to sell it for. It's not a situation I want to think about. So I'll just focus on gathering the support this project needs to make it happen now.
I'm looking forward to hearing from everyone who is helping make this story accessible in English, and how many people in how many countries are involved.
I'm adding the names of pledgers to a notebook, and the supporter countries that I know of. Thank you so much. I read this notebook everyday and thank you personally, one by one.

4. もし目標に達しなかった場合、どうなるのでしょうか？それでも本を翻訳するのですか？
もし目標に到達したら、スケジュールを確保して、1年以内に本を訳すように努力します。みなさんの応援があると 完成のタイムラインが見えるようになり、みなさんが楽しみに完成を待てる状況になります。この翻訳を優先できる状況になります。
もし、目標に届かなかったら、泣きますよ。そうしたら、この1年間は、他の有給の仕事にフォーカスをシフトしなければなりません。もし、資金を得ずに翻訳をするのであれば、私の有給の仕事と並行して、カタツムリのようなペースで進めることになるでしょう（稼がないと生活ができないので）。その場合、どれだけの年数がかかるか、いくらで売る必要があるかわかりません。そんなことは考えたくもないです。そのため、このプロジェクトをいま実現させるように必要な支援を集めることに集中することにします。
この物語を英語で読めるようにするために、何カ国の方々が関わっているのか、みんなの声を聞くのが楽しみです。
今、ノートに寄付者の名前と、私が知っているサポーターの国を書き加えているところです。本当にありがとうございます。毎日このノートを読みながら、一人一人に個人的にお礼を言っています。
