Hi, everyone.

All of a sudden, a year has passed since my crowdfunding campaign ended. 368 days to be exact.
I’ll keep this update short, because typing the sentence above makes me feel I should spend time typing more on the translation, not the update. But I wanted to check in and say that I’m making progress with the translation. It’s slow in general, as I can’t work on this full time, but it’s fast on certain days. I’m feeling good about it, and looking forward to more full days working on it this autumn. Slow but steady wins the race.

Since I last wrote, I’ve had a lot of help with reading the kanji of the names I don’t know in the past Kodo members, staff, and apprentices list, and heard a lot of anecdotes about the people behind the names. During the recent Europe tour, some of the cast members sent me the reading of the names they knew, telling me a little about them back in the day, or where they are now. It was lovely to hear these little stories, which aren’t in the book. I can see I’m going to learn at least 2 or 3 books worth of info through this process.

It’s a busy time of year for me in general, translating some things about to be announced for the Kodo ensemble and starting to work on translation for Kodo’s festival Earth Celebration. I’m working on these deadlines and the book, so it’s almost all Kodo Kodo Kodo right now. I’ll keep my head down, and keep moving forward. Looking ahead, I’m sure the most progress is coming up in May and June. I’ll make sure of that.

I hope this message finds you well. Please know I do enjoy the anecdotes some of you send me in response to my updates, too. It’s lovely to get to know you more through this project.

急に感じていますが クラウドファンディング・キャンペーンが終了してから1年が経ちました。正確には368日です。

上記の文章を打っていると、アップデートを書くより、翻訳にもっと時間を入れるべきだと感じるので、このメッセージは手短にします。フルタイムで作業することができないので、全体的に進歩が遅いですが、速い日もあります。この秋、もっと翻訳に取り組める日を予定しているので すでに楽しみにしています。ゆっくりでも着実に。

前回のアップデートから、鼓童の今までのメンバー、スタッフ、研修生のリストの知らない名前の漢字の読み方を教えていただいたり、名前の背景にある人物の逸話をたくさん聞きました。最近までヨーロッパツアーについていたキャストも知っている名前の読み仮名を送ってくれて、当時のことや現在のことを少し話してくれました。本には載っていない、ちょっとしたエピソードを聞けたのは嬉しかったです。この作業を通して、少なくとも2、3冊分の情報を学ぶことになりそうです。

この時期は、鼓童が近いうちに発表する情報の翻訳をしたり、鼓童のフェスティバル「アース・セレブレーション」の翻訳に取り掛かったりと、全体的に忙しいです。これらの締め切りと本の翻訳で、今はほとんど鼓童・鼓童・鼓童です。気を引き締めて、前に進んでいきたいと思います。今後のことを考えると、5月、6月が一番進んでいるはずです。進むようにします！

皆さんが元気であることを願っています。こちらの近況報告に対して、何人かの方が送ってくださる逸話も楽しみにしています。このプロジェクトを通して、皆さんのこともより知るチャンスがあって素敵です。

Greetings from Melbourne, Australia.

I’m spending just over 3 weeks here, working remotely and looking after my friend’s dog while she is in Europe. Kodo is also in Europe and that is no coincidence. My friend is enjoying Kodo performances over there, and I’m at her place, translating Kodo’s book with a very snuggly canine companion.

Since my last update, I’ve finished updating the Silver Supporter list. Seeing all the names in one place is overwhelming, in the best way. Thank you so much. Emails kept trickling in, so I kept pushing it back a week at a time. Thanks to everyone who helped me fill in the gaps and better alphabetise it. 

I’ve been working on the start and the end of the book. The start is a message from Takao Aoki, who was Kodo’s Managing Director in 2011 when the book was printed. The end is the credits: the editorial team, writers, photographers, contributors, English to Japanese translator, the designer, and of course, the publisher. I’m also working on translating the names of all the people who were members of Kodo’s antecedent group Sado no Kuni Ondekoza in the 1970s and all the Kodo members, staff, and apprentices from 1981 to 2011. While I’ve read this list in Japanese many times, I’m surprised that there are a lot of names I don’t know when I go to write them in alphabet. As a translator, I’ve heard many times that translation is the deepest form of reading, and the slowest, most thorough form of reading. I know this to be true, and I’m feeling this truth tenfold with these name lists. I can’t help but think about all these people. I wonder where they are now, what they are doing, and if I’ve met them before but didn’t realise who they were. It’s a long list from the beginning to 2011. And it's been growing ever since. As I translate the start, many names crop up. I turn to the back, and those names are repeated multiple times. Founders, contributors, providers of photos. I see their names and feel surrounded by many people as I translate each word.

Together with the Silver, Gold, and Platinum Supporters, this book will be filled with names. As I type each one, I’m really happy to help connect the people in the Japanese book to the people surrounding the English book. 

I’m enjoying this process very much. While I am working on it alone at this stage, I feel surrounded by people.

オーストラリアのメルボルンからこんにちは。

友人が３週間ヨーロッパで旅行をしている間、私が友人の犬の世話をしながらリモートワークをしています。鼓童もヨーロッパツアーをしている最中ですが　それは偶然ではありません。友人はヨーロッパで鼓童の公演を楽しんでいて、私は彼女の家で、犬に寄り添われながら鼓童の本を翻訳しています。

前回のアップデート以来、シルバーサポーターのリストを更新し終えました。全ての名前が一堂に会しているのを見ると、良い意味で圧倒されます。本当に感謝しています。メールがちょっとずつ届いていたので、1週間ずつ延期していました。抜けているところを埋めたり、アルファベット順の整理を手伝ってくれたみなさん、ありがとうございました。

本の冒頭と最後の部分を英訳している最中です。冒頭は、この本が印刷された2011年当時、鼓童の代表だった青木孝夫からのメッセージです。最後の部分は、本のクレジットロール：編集チーム、ライター、写真家、寄稿者、英日翻訳者、デザイナー、そしてもちろん出版社です。また、1970年代に鼓童の前身である「佐渡の国鬼太鼓座」のメンバーだった方々や、1981年から2011年までの鼓童のメンバー、スタッフ、研修生全員の名前を訳す作業もしています。このリストは日本語で何度も読み返しているが、アルファベットで書こうとすると知らない名前がたくさんあることに驚いています。翻訳者である私は、翻訳とは最も深い読書であり、最も遅く、最も徹底した読書であると何度も聞いてきました。これが真実であることを知っていますが、この名前リストの翻訳でこの真実を10倍感じています。そして、この人たちのことを考えずにはいられません。彼らは今どこで何をしているだろう、会ったことはあるけれど誰だかわからなかったでしょうか。最初から2011年までの長いリストです。それ以来、増え続けています。本の冒頭を訳していると、たくさんの名前が出ています。後ろに回ると、それらの名前が何度も繰り返されます。創設者、貢献者、写真の提供者。彼らの名前を目にし、多くの人々に囲まれていることを感じながら、一つひとつの言葉を訳していきます。

シルバーサポーター、ゴールドサポーター、プラチナサポーターと合わせると、この本にはたくさんの名前が並ぶことになります。その一文字一文字を打ち込みながら、この日本語の本に登場する人たちと、この英語の本を応援している人たちをつなぐお手伝いができることを本当に嬉しく思っています。

この作業はとても楽しいです。現段階では一人で作業していますが、人に囲まれていることを実感しています。

With my December update, I’d like to send you my very best wishes for the holiday season.

Thank you again for your kind support this year to get the translation of Kodo’s book underway. I look forward to completing it in 2024.

Since I last wrote, I’ve been to Sydney for a translation and interpreting conference in late November. On my arrival, I had the chance to meet up with a fellow translator Meagan , who will be checking my translation for the entire book. Meagan is based in Victoria, Australia, and is a fellow NAATI Certified Japanese to English translator. She’s an interpreter and writer, too. We studied interpreting together at Monash University, and Meagan has been helping out with some of my translation and subtitling projects in recent years. It was wonderful to give her a copy of the Japanese version of Kodo’s book and talk about the content and workflow. I’m working on translations now which Meagan will start reviewing in the New Year.

Last week, I had a meeting with a graphic designer about this project. While it’s early to be discussing the design and layout, I wanted to start the ball rolling sooner rather than later after a couple of chats I had while interpreting at a graphic design conference in September. I got to show the designer Kodo’s Japanese book for the first time and I talked through some of my ideas for the English version, including the additional content for the Supporters Edition. They said they were definitely interested in helping, and after having that chat, I’m feeling all the more excited to get to that stage in the project. It’s gone from a dream to feeling very real indeed.

I’ve been working on the first pages of the book and have decided to shift my focus to the back pages now because this book is filled with names, many of which are listed in the back. I think the sooner I get the names into English, the better, so I can add them to my spell check and keep them consistent throughout.

While my book translation time hasn’t been plentiful so far, it’s about to steadily ramp up. I’m blocking time in my Google calendar, turning down new jobs, and chipping away at the translation, line by line.

Thank you again for supporting this project. I’ve been lucky to thank many of you in person this year in New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. I’m really grateful for the kind comments and replies that you’ve sent through, too. I look forward to seeing more of you in 2024. Let’s celebrate together when this book is complete!

12月の近況報告とともに、年末年始のご挨拶を申し上げます。

本年も、鼓童の翻訳を進めるにあたり、温かいご支援を賜り、誠にありがとうございました。2024年の完成を楽しみにしています。

前回のアップデートの後ですが、11月下旬に翻訳・通訳会議のためシドニーに行ってきました。到着後、翻訳者仲間のミーガンさんに会う機会がありました。ミーガンさんはオーストラリアのビクトリア州在住で、NAATI認定の日英翻訳者の同僚です。そして通訳者と作家として活躍しています。私たちはモナシュ大学で一緒に通訳を学び、近年は私の翻訳や字幕のプロジェクトを手伝ってくれています。ミーガンさんにやっと鼓童の日本語版を渡し、内容やワークフローについて話すことができたのは非常によかったです。ミーガンさんは新年に翻訳チェックを始める予定です。

先週、このプロジェクトについてグラフィックデザイナーとの打ち合わせもしました。デザインやレイアウトについて話し合うのはまだ早いですが、9月にグラフィックデザインの会議で通訳をしたときに何度か話したことがあったので、早急に着手したかったです。デザイナーに鼓童の日本語の本を初めて見せることができたし、サポーター版の追加コンテンツも含め、英語版についての私のアイデアを話したところ、そのデザイナーさんはぜひ協力したいと言ってくれました。夢のような話から、ますます現実だと実感できる日々になってきました。
本の最初のページたちに取り組んでいましたが、今は後ろのページに焦点を移すことにしました。その理由はこの本にはたくさんの名前が出てきますが  多くの人名が奥付に記載されているからです。人名を英語にするのは早ければ早いほどいいと思います。そうするとスペルチェックに追加して、全体を通して一貫性を保つことができますね。

これまで書籍翻訳の時間はそれほど多くなかったが、今週からどんどん増えます。グーグルカレンダーで時間を区切り、新しい仕事を断り、一行ずつ翻訳を進めています。

何度も言わせていただきます。このプロジェクトを応援していただき、本当にありがとうございます。今年は、ニュージーランド、オーストラリア、そして日本で、多くの皆さんに直接お礼を申し上げることができました。皆さんからいただいたコメントやお返事にも本当に感謝しています。2024年にもっと多くの皆さんにお会いできることを楽しみにしています。この本が完成したら、一緒にお祝いしましょう！

Hi, everyone.

Thank you for your patience while I recovered from the campaign, caught up on work, and finished the projects already scheduled before this campaign succeeded.
I find it hard to believe that it's 7 months today since this campaign ended. I have seen many of you during this time and been able to thank you in person, for which I am truly grateful.

Today, I updated the Silver Supporter list at last, after waiting for quite a while for replies.
And I opened the first document and started translating this book. 
I'll be in touch on the 13th of every month with an update until it's ready.

Thank you for cheering me on. It's taken longer than I expected to start the translation process, but it feels like the right time now as I sit here. Here we go!

Hi, everyone!

We did it!!! I went to bed at 2am and we were 91% funded. I woke up and we had hit 100%.
Thank you all so much for all the cheering and encouragement overnight around the world.

With 8 hours to go, we just reached the 103% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 296 supporters. I am truly grateful to each and everyone of you.

I've had a lot of people saying they would like me to extend the campaign because:

1. They thought it ended in November not today (April 11), since 11/4 means November 4 in the US. They need more time to check with their group about making a group pledge.

2. They are still spreading the word to people not on social media who they don't want to miss the chance to support this book and receive a Supporters Limited Edition.

3. Some senior citizens and non-English speakers are panicking last minute that they want to pledge but can't figure out the website. 

The lovely team at PledgeMe has agreed to extend this campaign for 48 hours to allow more time to people who want to support this project, and perhaps have their name/logo in the book and receive the Supporters Limited Edition. There will be no extensions after that.



I won't be pushing the campaign anymore. It's been a very long campaign and now it's time for me to catch up on rest and my translation work.
So please think of this as a quiet extension for those who want to be part of this project and just needed a little more time. 

This campaign has just been extended and now runs until April 13, 23:00 NZST.

目標達成しましたよ！！！ 午前2時に寝ましたが、目標達成率は91％でした。目が覚めたら、100％を達成していました。
一晩中、世界中からの応援と励ましを本当にありがとうございました。

残り8時間で、私たちは103％の資金調達に到達したところです。最初の296人のサポーターの方々、本当にありがとうございました。皆さん一人ひとりに本当に感謝しています。

キャンペーンを延長してほしいという声をたくさんいただいています。その理由は主に：

1. 11/4はアメリカでは11月4日なので、今日（4月11日）ではなく、11月に終了すると思っていたようです。グループで寄付する前にグループメンバーに確認をとる時間がもっと必要です。

With 4 days to go, we just reached the 58% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 160 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project. I am truly grateful to each and everyone of you.

Today I want to share the breakdown of how the funds will be used. These figures are tax inclusive.
I know some people wonder why it costs so much to translate a book. The simple answer is that translation is a professional service. 
I'm a NAATI Certified Translator, and my work will be reviewed and checked by a fellow NAATI Certified Translator, Meagan Sneddon. We studied translation and interpreting together at Monash University, and we've collaborated on a range of projects since becoming freelancers. With 2 weeks to go, we just reached the 31% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 110 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project.

Today I'd like to share a map of where the pledges to date have come from. I am so grateful for all the support to date from near and far. I only know the countries for the names I recognise, and the people who have contacted me. For the people I don't know yet, and the anonymous ones, I have no idea.

Something some of you already know about me is that I love documentaries and biographies. Going behind the scenes and learning more about famous people and my favourite artists. When I first moved to Sado Island in 2007 to work with Kodo, I lived at Kodo Village in the dormitory for newcomers. I remember sitting by the fireplace at night, reading "Scar Tissue": the biography of Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis. I was so engrossed in it. I recall one of the young Kodo members Masayuki Sakamoto's voice saying "Lucky you, Melanie." Every day. He was jealous because it wasn't available in Japanese. "Is it good?" "Is it really good?" He knew he was missing out and I really felt for him. I absolutely love that band and I really enjoyed that book, but we couldn't geek out and discuss it together. I know there are people around the world who want to get their hands on Kodo's story in English just like rock fan Masayuki wanted to read the RCHP stories. We all want to have a chance to learn more about our favourite people and groups. I am excited to give people who access to Kodo's story in English, too.

With 3 weeks to go, we just reached the 24% funded mark. Thank you so much to the first 99 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project.

Today, I want to share with you where I got the idea to offer backers a chance to have their name and logo in this book. When I worked at Kodo Village on Sado Island, every day I would walk past a display of supporter plaques to enter and leave the main office building. It features the names, signatures, messages, and even hand and footprints of people who gave donations in 1985 to help Kodo build Kodo Village. Even now, when I visit Kodo, I stop and read those names. Each time, I know a few more, thanks to making new connections through concerts, taiko events, and social media. It takes a village to launch a massive project. Kodo has a village, and is reminded of the support that made that possible every day. In this book, all along I’ve wanted to have a section where people can have their name, and group’s logo, and show their support forever in a similar way.

While it’s not a tier perk, I’ll also have a section called “In Loving Memory of,” where we (you, Kodo, and I) can dedicate this English translation to members of the taiko community who are no longer with us. Like the plaques at Kodo Village, there is very limited space, so I’ll keep that for people who we know that supported Kodo. Please get in touch if you’d like to include a name in this section. On Saturday, it was two years since Kodo colleague and friend Takashi Akamine passed away. This Saturday, it will be two years since my mum passed away. So this post comes at a time of remembrance and deep gratitude for special, special people.
I’m encouraged by all the support and kind words that come in every day. And the lingering voices of Takashi and Mum in my ears… “You can do it, Mel!” Let’s make this happen together.

今日は、この本に自分の名前とロゴを掲載する機会を提供することを思いついたきっかけについてお話したいと思います。私が佐渡島にある鼓童村で働いていたとき、毎日、事務所の建物に出入りするとき、サポーター銘板のディスプレイの前を通りました。そこには、1985年に鼓童の「鼓童村」建設のために寄付をしてくださった方々の名前、サイン、メッセージ、そして手や足跡までが記されています。今でも鼓童を訪れると、立ち止まってその名前を読みます。コンサートや太鼓のイベント、ソーシャルメディアを通じての新しいつながりのおかげで、毎回、数人の知り合いが増えています。巨大なプロジェクトを立ち上げるには、英語では「村が必要だ」(何かを成し遂げるにはいろんな人の協力が必要だ」)というフレースをよく言います。鼓童には村があり、それを可能にしたサポートに日々気づかされる名簿があります。この本でも、同じように自分の名前やグループのロゴを入れて、いつまでも応援してもらえるようなコーナーを設けたいとずっと思っていました。

We just reached the 20% funded mark. 🥳 🥳 🥳 Thank you so much to the first 85 supporters, and everyone who is sharing this project.
This book has 5 chapters, so I'll mention one chapter for each 20% funded.
The first chapter is "Origins." It talks about the beginnings and story of Sado no Kuni Ondekoza, the transition from Sado no Kuni Ondekoza to Kodo, and Kodo's first ten years.

I've just added perks for Gold and Platinum to offer more to groups and organisations who pledge in this category.

本書は5章構成になっていますので、20％の資金が集まるごとに1章ずつ紹介していきます。
第1章は 「原点」です。佐渡の國変遷 鬼太鼓座の始まりと物語、渡の國 鬼太鼓座から鼓童への移行、そして鼓童の最初の10年間について書かれています。

先ほどゴールドとプラチナに特典を追加しました。このカテゴリーにご登録いただいた団体や組織への特典をもっと提供したかったです。

It's Day 22 of this crowdfunding campaign. We are edging closer and closer to the day that I can share Kodo's story with the world in English. It's all thanks to the first 59 supporters, and everyone spreading the word about this project. Thank you, everyone!

While I am really encouraged, I also know that the current pace, we won't get there in time. It's an all-or-nothing campaign... because translating 15% of a book wouldn't be a satisfying read, right?

Great question! I'm working this out now. I'll be adding some perks for gold and platinum supporters soon to make them more appealing and fair for groups/organisations. (This weekend!) However, with these tiers, it's more about offering more support, and having a chance to put your group's logo in the book (not something that was possible for the Japanese one) to show your support. 3. Do you have more information in English about the original Japanese book?
This is all the English info that Kodo shared about the Japanese book when it was published in 2011: https://www.kodo.or.jp/news/20110607book_en.html I doubt you'll find much more in English about the book before it is translated into English. If you have any questions about the book, feel free to ask.

4. If you don't reach your target, what will happen? Will you still translate the book?
If I reach the target, I'll block my schedule and work to translate the book within one year. Everyone will know the book is on its way, all thanks to their support. It will be a priority.
If I don't reach the target, I will cry. Then I will have to shift focus to other paid work for the year ahead. If I translate the book without funding, it will be at a snail pace, around my paid work (I have to make a living, too). Who knows how many years it will take or how much I'll need to sell it for. It's not a situation I want to think about. So I'll just focus on gathering the support this project needs to make it happen now.

I'm looking forward to hearing from everyone who is helping make this story accessible in English, and how many people in how many countries are involved.
I'm adding the names of pledgers to a notebook, and the supporter countries that I know of. Thank you so much. I read this notebook everyday and thank you personally, one by one.

英語に翻訳される前に、この本について英語で書かれたものはあまりないと思います。もし、この本について何か質問があれば、遠慮なく聞いてください。

4. もし目標に達しなかった場合、どうなるのでしょうか？それでも本を翻訳するのですか？

もし目標に到達したら、スケジュールを確保して、1年以内に本を訳すように努力します。みなさんの応援があると　完成のタイムラインが見えるようになり、みなさんが楽しみに完成を待てる状況になります。この翻訳を優先できる状況になります。

もし、目標に届かなかったら、泣きますよ。そうしたら、この1年間は、他の有給の仕事にフォーカスをシフトしなければなりません。もし、資金を得ずに翻訳をするのであれば、私の有給の仕事と並行して、カタツムリのようなペースで進めることになるでしょう（稼がないと生活ができないので）。その場合、どれだけの年数がかかるか、いくらで売る必要があるかわかりません。そんなことは考えたくもないです。そのため、このプロジェクトをいま実現させるように必要な支援を集めることに集中することにします。

この物語を英語で読めるようにするために、何カ国の方々が関わっているのか、みんなの声を聞くのが楽しみです。

I don't see the details of where you are or how much you pledge, just your name and any comments you leave on the campaign page.
So far, from the names I know and the comments received, I can see contributions have come in from New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Canada, Argentina, and Japan.
