The Cutting Edge Of Gifting! Gift Boxes That Keep On Giving!

Project 2022-01-27 17:45:11 +1300

Have you ever received a giftbox hamper and wished the box had been good enough quality to re-gift instead of going to the trash? Do you wish to gift someone a gift box that is personalized and yet durable enough to last years on the shelf - for that person to enjoy for years to come? Well, you're not alone, that is the small beginning of my big-picture dream.

The Inception

CAD DesignEighteen months ago my wife and I invested five figures into a large format CO2 laser cutter, with the idea that I could turn my twenty years of hobbyist CAD experience into products. Like most starting out in laser cutting I began with something simple to learn the machine - a box. Unlike a lot of simple, single-layer boxes that can be found online and rely on glue, I wanted my box to have a point of difference. It needed to be more than just a vessel for storage. It needed to be a point of conversation.Large Gift Box - Plain So with this brief in mind I went ahead and designed my box to allow for 3 layers of artistic design and require no glue for assembly. The resulting box was good looking, it had super simple assembly (though not perfect), and it was strong - able to comfortably hold my 80kgs of weight! I took this initial design and spent time refining it; Eventually I had a design which was no longer a "learn laser cutting" project. It was a sellable product and it drew a lot of attention from visitors. It was from here I realised that there was a huge gap in the market for re-useable and durable personalized gift boxes.

The Goal

It's really quite simple. My goal is to take these gift boxes to market. I would love to revolutionise gifting for people. I would love for people to have the option of a re-useable gift box to keep or give - rather than boxes made of mixed material card as is very common in the gift box industry. So after the chocolates are eaten, after the wine has been drunk, after the flowers have died, a giftee will still have a fantastic keepsake. If this sounds like a viable idea to you then please keep reading!

The Problem

Over the months of using the conventional CO2 Laser Cutter and learning its optimal settings, I was also running the sustainability numbers required to turn this into a full time job - and I wasn't convinced. I want to have the capacity to produce 20-50,000 of these boxes per year and that is just the beginning! Even having multiple laser cutters wasn't going to 'cut' it. The labour vs machine output figure was too high to make me competitive in international markets. Like taking my gift box to the next level of design, I needed to take my cutting game to the next level, a level where I have no competition...

The Solution

Over the past 12 months I have identified multiple flaws in the fundamental design of CO2 Laser Cutters, which are primarily used for the precise cutting of non-metal materials. These design flaws eliminate the possibility of production line automation, and at times can cause significant downtime - severely reducing the cutters reliability. This has hindered me from taking these gift boxes to market and seeking larger commercial contracts - I don't want to take on large volumes of orders that I can't reasonably expect to fulfil. As a result I have used my skills in CAD to address these fundamental design flaws and design my own laser cutter using T-Slot extrusion for its frame. My design is now ready for prototyping and that's where this campaign comes in.

Funds raised will go towards the materials required to build my more efficient CO2 Laser Cutter, replacing my current conventional CO2 Laser Cutter and allowing me to work towards full automation of Gift Box production - giving me the confidence to reliably produce large orders. Quotes for the Aluminium Extrusion have come in close to NZD$800, quotes for the required electrical system upgrades has come in at NZD$4000. The rest of the funds will go towards materials and postage for the rewards, and any hidden costs that come up during the prototyping.

The Future

Painted Persian PatternI've already mentioned that I'd like to be producing 20-50,000 of these boxes per year - but that is just for New Zealand. I would also love to take these boxes abroad so they can become a staple of a business. I would like the entire production process to be completely automated where it is reasonable to do so, that way I can be as competitive as possible.

Post campaign pricing is the most exciting about these boxes. Number crunching has shown the Small Gift Boxes could be sold with a RRP of just $5.00, with the Large Gift Boxes having a RRP of just $20.00! Wholesale pricing is more attractive still, with automated manufacturing allowing both products to be wholesaled 40%+ cheaper than the RRP. Not only does this make these gift boxes very accessible to the end user market, but it will also provide stockists with an attractive margin too.

Once automated Gift Box production has scaled up enough, the aim is to produce small kitset crafts which can be painted before assembly. There is already such a huge range of ideas that I have worked on and the ideas just keep on coming. One day I hope to provide employment opportunities for people who have a passion for art.

I will only engrave names or small blurbs like Happy Birthday. I will not engrave anything deemed offensive, these will default to your name being engraved instead. Thanks

Credibility

Hi, I'm Anthony, I'm 36 years old and I have worked across a range of production related positions in FMCG businesses for the best part of 18 years. From machine operating to process improvement, during my time in the work force I have been exposed to many different production processes and have developed a very strong focus on efficiency. Improving bottom-lines by reducing waste streams and unplanned downtime became my goal as an employee. This experience is the backbone of this project and the driving force behind what will be an industry changing innovation not just for gift boxes, but also for the global CO2 (non-metal) Laser Cutting Industry.
