CONSERVATION Game - Small Steps To Save The Planet

Project 2021-09-12 04:37:55 +1200

The CONSERVATION/te whāomoomo game is a fun way to explore ways we can care for the earth, connect with nature and help conserve the planet's resources. Take small steps to save the planet, Be a Tidy Kiwi and earn points. Make a mess, waste energy or water and lose points. I CARE cards help you do good things. Inspired by the original 1976 New Zealand made game of CONSERVATION invented by Bob Reynolds and now made mindfully in Australia.

Lisa explains, "It has been my dream to re-invent the CONSERVATION board game I played as a child. In 2019 I went to NZ to see family and to find R.J Reynolds. With help from friends I found Bob and went to meet him in Nelson. I showed him my own cloth version of the game and told him my dream.

Lisa and Bob - February 2020hand drawn cloth sample shown to Bob

In February 2020 Bob gave me the rights to the game and I have been developing several versions of it with initial seed funding from the Nancy Shelley Bequest Fund, managed by Blue Mountains Quakers. The first version made in Australia is called EARTHCARE and production started in late 2021 thanks to a successful crowdfunder which ran from May - July 2021. Over 300 EARTHCARE games have been delivered to crowdfunder backers and online customers.

I have now registred the company THIS SACRED EARTH PTY LTD and am ready to make plans for the Aotearoa New Zealand version using the original name CONSERVATION, still an important concept across the world, especially in this United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, 2021 - 2030".

Lisa's mum is a Pakeha Kiwi and she has lots of uncles, aunties and cousins in Aoteroa-New Zealand. The EARTHCARE / CONSERVATION team who volunteered their time to get the game off the ground included Julian Bowker (in Australia), John Michaelis (in Aotearoa), Linda Agresti Hogue and Lisa Wriley (both in Australia).

The aim going forward is that Lisa will be paid to project manage and 50% of profit from sale of the games will go to conservation projects in the countries where it is sold. This will include a $1 donation to Keep New Zealand Beautiful for each box game sold in Aotearoa New Zealand which will go towards helping their important work educating, inspiring and empowering Kiwis to Do the Right Thing.

Lisa gives some background: "Making this game is important because the original game had a big impact on me and I hope it will inspire others to take action for the earth.  I trained as a teacher and have worked in environmental education and campaigning for more than 20 years. I believe games are a powerful way to learn important concepts while having fun and interacting with other players."

What will the money be used for?

The money raised through PledgeMe, if we reach our goal, will help make the first 500 copies of the bi-lingual game of CONSERVATION. It will pay for the translation from english into te reo Māori and the manufacturing of the game box, folding game boards, cardboard tokens, I CARE, LITTER and 'HOW MANY STEPS? cards, footprint player pieces, upcycled smooth glass, aluminium and cardboard. It will also assist in the making of EARTHCARE cloth&clay games (see test print on canvas below) for those who like a game they can fit in their back-pack! The PledgeMe target funds also need to cover the cost to deliver the game (NZ$34 for postage and handling).

We hope to reach the goal by Sunday 5 June, World Environment Day, and go into production. People will be able to pre-order more copies of the games here: https://www.earthcaregame.org/shop.

Environmental Commitments

Long-lasting design

The original CONSERVATION board game has lasted more than 40 years in my family so I plan to follow Bob Reynold's example and make a simple quality product that will stand the test of time.  As it says on one of the game squares: "choose products that last". I hope this game can be handed down to the next generation.

Reusability and recyclability

Any packaging will be fully re-usable or recyclable. Let's keep our resources flowing around in a cycle - like nature!

Sustainable materials

High % recycled paper and cardboard for box, board and cards, clay or sustainably sourced plantation or upcycled timber will be used for the Footprint player pieces and tokens,  offcuts of aluminium from local businesses and scrap from a local stained glass business will represent metal and glass, after tumbling to make them safe to handle.

The CONSERVATION and EARTHCARE games are made by THIS SACRED EARTH PTY LTD and H.O.P.E (Helping Our Planet Earth); a social enterprise, Australian business started by Lisa Wriley.

3 days to go in CONSERVATION crowdfunder - 2 new rewards

03/06/2022 at 2:09 AM

Dear Friends, Champions and Heroes,

When I went to Auckland a few weeks ago I arranged to meet with Rosie from Kura Rēhia, a collective who create games, resources and events for a bilingual Aotearoa. We talked games!

I asked Rosie if Kura Rēhia could help make the new bilingual CONSERVATION game a language learning resource and they came up with these two great options for rewards:

1. CONSERVATION GAME +Tākaro i te reo: Learn to play Conservation / Te Whāomoomo in the Māori language! (Digital resource) NZ$148 on the crowdfunder

Receive a CONSERVATION game (with 2 boards - one bilingual and one te reo Māori) and the Digital Resource to help you learn the words and phrases you'll need to play in te reo Māori , including playable recordings to help you with your pronunciation. This resource is created by Kura Rēhia (a collective who create games, resources and events for a bilingual Aotearoa) and the translations are provided by certified te reo Māori translators. Learn the kupu Māori (Māori words) and kīanga (phrases) used in the game, and how to pronounce them.

Find out more about the team at Kura Rehia and the Kaupapa game: https://speak.maori.nz/pages/mo-kura-rehia-about

2. CONSERVATION GAME + Tākaro i te reo: Learn to play Conservation / Te Whāomoomo in the Māori language! (Live lesson) NZ$168 on the #PledgeME crowdfunder

Receive a CONSERVATION game (with 2 boards - one bilingual and one te reo Māori) and one registration for a one hour online lesson where educators and parents can learn how to play the game bilingually using te reo Māori. Learn the kupu Māori (Māori words) and kīanga (phrases) used in the game, how to pronounce them, and have the opportunity to ask questions and have a go!

This online lesson is provided through Kura Rēhia: a collective who create games, resources and events for a bilingual Aotearoa. You will also receive a digital resource with the words, phrases and recordings to help you practise your pronunciation. Bookings required: 1 hour lessons can be booked in for July 2022. There will be options eg. 4pm Monday, 5:30pm Thursday and 11am Saturday, as well the opportunity to watch a recording or create an additional session if needed. Image is of Kaupapa Game.

Find out more about Kura Rehia and the Kaupapa game: https://speak.maori.nz/pages/mo-kura-rehia-about

I will do another update before the deadline at 11pm on Sunday. If I do not reach my goal (which is looking very likely) then I do not receive any money for the project and you do not pay anything.  You will be able to reinvest your pledge amount by buying an EARTHCARE game if you choose to and I will keep working on ways to get the game into production or at least a te reo Māori resource to accompany the EARTHCARE game - so stay tuned!

Thank you again so much for your support,
Lisa

Hello Friends,

Thank you so much for your support of my crowdfunder to make the new CONSERVATION game.  Pledges are coming in slowly but I haven't given up on making my goal yet.

I have made a poster to help share the #PledgeMe crowdfunder more widely.

If you would like to help share this poster I can email it to you if you email me on [email protected] (I cannot access your email address through #PledgeMe or attach it to this update).  Here is a 'snip' of the poster.

The text at the bottom of the poster:

Take care everyone,

Happy Birthday Bob! The CONSERVATION game NZ crowdfunder is under way!

10/05/2022 at 9:38 AM

Bob Reynolds invented the 1976 CONSERVATION game in NZ and has given me permission to give it new life in 2022. Here are the two games side by side.

Bob was happy to receive the first prototype of the new CONSERVATION game for his 84th birthday.

This makes the third game in the collection.

The EARTHCARE box games and cloth games are already in production thanks to a crowdfunder in Australia last year.  More than 300 games have been delivered so far to pledgers and online shop pre-orders. Find them here: https://www.earthcaregame.org/

Now it is time to spread the word and find enough pledgers for the NZ #PledgeMe crowdfunder so we can make the first 500 copies of the new CONSERVATION game.

A big thank you to the first pledgers who have helped us crack the first $1000!! Bless you.

Please share with family, friends, colleagues, local schools, Scouts, Guides, adventure groups, nature lovers, earthcarers and waste wise folk who will value a fun way to explore the concepts of re-use, conserving resources, connecting with nature and caring for this amazing planet we share.
