Who are we?

Nikau Foundation is an independent charitable trust created for the benefit of the people of the Wellington region. We provide a simple, effective and long-lasting way for individuals and families to leave legacies for local causes and to ensure those gifts will provide benefit into the future.

Community Foundations like ours, build local funds that will benefit their local community, forever.  It’s about encouraging local generosity. We connect people who care with causes that matter within their local areas. There are 16 Community Foundations in New Zealand and over 1,700 worldwide.

What’re we doing?

Right now, we're very excited about our newest fund - the Wellington Resilience Fund.

Experiences of the Christchurch Earthquakes tell us that well organised community groups are ideally suited to respond to a crisis. In addition, supporting communities to prepare for future challenges makes for stronger communities today.

For that reason and with a focus on connectedness and preparedness, we’ve partnered with local community groups and the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) with the aim of making Wellington one of the most resilient cities in the world!

And your support is integral in making this happen.

Money raised for the Wellington Resilience Fund will help to bring you and your community together, and be prepared in order to respond and recover from emergencies.

To prepare Wellington for long term emergency resilience the Wellington Resilience Fund will provide grants to local community hubs of brand new water tanks and solar power banks.

We’ll also be bringing local communities together by providing funding for projects such as community gardens or predator-free activities.

You can go to our website and share with us what resilience projects you think we should be funding, www.nikaufoundation.org.nz/resilience

Of course, central and local government is playing their part in getting Wellington prepared, but their funding will be focused on major infrastructure continuity projects. The Wellington Resilience Fund is a community fund. The money will be raised by the community, for the community. And everyone can contribute - donations can be big or small. All PledgeMe rewards contribute to the Fund.

So what’s the (sweet) deal?

We’ve partnered with the Wellington Chocolate Factory to create a special edition Wellington Resilience Bar. Wellington Chocolate Factory’s best-selling Salted Caramel Chocolate Bar will be wrapped in a design from Wellington artist Stephen Templer making it the perfect sweet addition to every emergency kit, in every home and workplace in Wellington.

You probably already know that Wellington Chocolate Factory makes certified organic, ethically sourced and traded, bean to bar chocolate of the highest quality. They roast, crack, winnow, conch and temper – using artisan methods reaching back to the 18th century – producing batches of strong, luscious organic chocolate. Legendary New Zealand artists like Stephen Templer add their own dash of inspiration, infusing the wrappers with original designs.

Pledge now!

This bar certainly has a unique story to tell - but there’s a catch, this special edition bar won’t be available for long!

You need to get in quick and pre-order yours today by making a pledge using the pledge options to the side. And remember, there’s no guilt in this chocolate purchase - proceeds from rewards will go into the Wellington Resilience Fund.

Meet our new intern Bri!

27/06/2018 at 12:25 PM

Bri is a marketing intern from San Jose, California.  She's working with us for the next month through a Massey University intern programme.

We thought we'd get her outside in the beautiful Wellington winter weather.  She think's it's like this every day.  Here Bri is holding the A1 Limited Edition Artwork.

Reward: Limited Edition Artwork

27/06/2018 at 11:05 AM

We're bringing the vivd colours of the Wellington Resilience Chocolate Bar to you as artwork.

We are offering a maximum of 13, A1 sized prints, unframed on German Etching paper.  The colours and quality are fantastic.  We have one sample each of the print in our office in the A1 and A3 size.  You are welcome to visit and see these in person. The A1 prints will be signed and numbered by the artist Stephen Templer.

Our brief to Stevey T was for a vivid Wellington scene which captured some of the hazards we face in Wellington.  Stevey introduced some imagined risks and hazards to go with those we might expect such as earthquakes and storms. We love it.

The limited edition artwork reward comes with ten Wellington Resilience bars, because we know that with this stunning piece on your wall you will want to share a piece of it with colleagues, friends and family.

The artwork is also available in A3 size on the same German Etching paper.  Check out the reward - Superior Wellington Resilience Artwork.  This comes with one Wellington Resilience bar.

The Wellington Resilience Bar. Every bar comes with our story.

Here's a look at the inside wrapper. This explains the Wellington Resilience Fund and how you're contributing to making Wellington a more resilient place to live.  #GiveWhereYouLive  Again, the artwork is by wonderfully creative Stephen Templer.

Predator Free Traps

20/06/2018 at 8:37 PM

Hi folks

Here's a little detail about our Predator Trap reward.  We're working with Predator Free Island Bay to bring this option to you.  Nikau Foundation funded Predator Free Island Bay in 2017 to build trap tunnels. We also funded Predator Free Miramar.

Your pledge of $60+ will get you a trap + tunnel and your Wellington Resilience Bar, delivered in Wellington.  $31 will go to Predator Free Island Bay to pay for your trap and also at least one for another community volunteer.  This means you're helping to increase the Predator Free Wellington movement.  The remainder of your pledge will cover the cost of the chocolate bar and contribute to the Wellington Resilience Fund.

In the event of an emergency it may be groups like Predator Free Wellington, with community connections, that can provide fast and effective assistance to local needs. #GiveWhereYouLive #lovewellington

Artwork as a reward (German Etching vs 200gsm silk)

19/06/2018 at 5:05 PM

Thanks for the interest in our PledgeMe campaign.  If you were wondering what the artwork would look like here is a photograph of the German Etching paper print (on the left) and the 200gsm silk poster.

German Fine Etching + 200gsm silk_Nikau Wellington Resilience

These are roughly A3 sized.  Because the artwork was commissioned especially for the Wellington Resilience Bar wrapper the dimensions are slightly different.  The German Etchings paper will come with a border.  A1 prints (limited to 13 only) will be signed and numbered by the artist, Stephen Templer.  Stevey T is well-known in Wellington and his designs and art are widely regarded http://stephentempler.co.nz/
