About Unlock the Potential of the Kilmarnock Academy

Project 2017-10-18 15:45:22 +1300

The Kilmarnock Training Academy is giving people with intellectual disabilities another chance to excel in education. With your support, we can grow our existing programme to reach 20 people within the first year, and open our doors to another 20 people with disabilities, many from outside of Kilmarnock, the following year. You will be helping to provide a transitional programme of work experience and formal qualifications that will assist talented people to find meaningful, sustainable employment outside of Kilmarnock. This is the first time in nearly sixty years of operations that we’ve had a project that the community can actively contribute to - and we’d love for you to join us on this exciting journey.

School made James feel that he would never succeed in education, but he has proven them wrong. Kilmarnock Academy is opening its doors for people with an intellectual disability and giving them a second chance to excel in education. James now has NZQA qualifications. With your help, Sarah, and many others can do the same.

Students with an intellectual disability are faced with very limited opportunities once they leave high school. Many watch their peers go on to higher education, apprenticeships or straight into employment. For young New Zealanders with a disability, the options are limited. Without a variety of opportunities and the freedom to make their own choices, they have very little control over their lives.

With a diversity of opportunity comes the ability to find a pathway that helps them develop their strengths, achieve their aspirations and become respected, contributing members of their community.

With your help, we can execute an exciting plan.

THE KILMARNOCK ACADEMY

What?

The Kilmarnock Academy is opening doors and unlocking potential for people with an intellectual disability, empowering them to find purposeful employment and a valued place in the community. Within the first two years, it will directly impact the lives of 40 students and deliver as many as 1,600 NZQA credits in numeracy, literacy, communications, and supported learning.

When?

Now! After a successful pilot earlier this year, we are in the middle of our second programme which is going incredibly well. Our first cohort completely exceeded expectations and collected considerably more credits than we imagined possible. The programme is currently run internally with our existing employees, but with the help of our community (that’s you!), we can use our learnings to look beyond Kilmarnock and start helping more young people with disabilities to find their purpose.

Why?

We believe that with the right training, support, and encouragement, we can all achieve incredible things. Everybody learns differently, and everybody deserves the opportunity to thrive. We are building a training institute that see's the individual and adapts the teaching to the way they learn at the speed that suits them. Because we believe in a world where diversity is embraced and we can all, unashamedly, seek the support we need to flourish.

 First graduates

How?

We have partnered with Hagley Adult Literacy Centre to provide NZQA training and qualifications that are relevant to the work environment and give our team the skills they need to progress their employment ambitions. Over the next six months, we will work with our existing employees to strengthen the programme before welcoming students from outside of Kilmarnock and addressing the great need in the community.

Why Funding?

Our first two programmes have given us a strong understanding of what we need to succeed and what this exciting endeavour will cost to roll out. We are seeking the support of our community to fund the first six months of 2018 and the later inclusion of students from outside of Kilmarnock. This will give us the time to build a sustainable model that will stand the test of time and provide security for school leavers with a disability. Funding will be used to subsidise the qualifications of external students, salaries of trainers and staff, wages to continue to pay our employees while they study, and of course all the extra learning equipment needed to provide a hands-on training programme such as this. Anything over and above our target will be incredibly valuable in helping us fast track solutions and build the best possible outcomes for our team.

Bang for your buck!

We know money can be a little tight around Christmas, this is why we have tried to provide some really special rewards. We have teamed up with some incredible designers, artists, and many of our amazing customers to provide you with something we think is a little bit special.

KILMARNOCK

Kilmarnock is making a genuine and tangible difference to the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.

We believe in a world that values diversity, and so we are changing attitudes towards disability through education, employment, and opportunity, empowering people with disabilities to lead purposeful and dignified lives.

So, we’ve developed the concept of ‘The Academy’.

Housed within Kilmarnock’s Basecamp in Wigram Business Park, ‘The Academy’ will change the lives of 40 people with disabilities in its first two years.

Over the past five years, we have been working with the community, social sector and Government to better understand the problems within the sector and develop our solution. We have liaised with a variety of people, including people with disabilities, their Whanau and support people, schools, disability organisations, Ministry of Social Development, Enabling Good Lives, Work and Income, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Health.

The sentiment is shared across all organisations and individuals; there are clearly identifiable gaps and a specific need for a solution to bridge the gap between high school and sustainable employment for people with an intellectual disability.

With this challenge in mind, Kilmarnock has been consciously evolving and testing our thinking to ensure that we are in the best possible position to meet this need. Due to our diverse commercial operations, holistic approach to wellness, strong understanding of the target market, fantastic new premises, and close relationships with the business sector; we are uniquely positioned to provide an exciting, tangible pathway to successful employment.

However, we need your help to bring ‘The Academy’ to life: by supporting this campaign, you’ll help us to expand our pilot to reach 20 people within the first year, and open our doors to another 20 people with disabilities, many from outside of Kilmarnock, the following year. You will be helping to provide a transitional programme of work experience and formal qualifications that will assist talented people to find meaningful, sustainable employment outside of Kilmarnock.

Please help us to give Sarah and her friends a real shot at success.

The artists
We are so lucky to know such wonderfully creative people! Four of our favourite artists have created for us some beautiful illustrations themed around education and inclusion.

Sean Bremen, An extremely talented local graphic designer, tackles the quote "If you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid".
