My name is Beth, I am a third year Fashion Design student, we have reached the time of the year where we  begin our final collections, these are the collections that are showcased at the end of year Design School exhibition and Fashion show.

Four weeks before the end of semester 2 , I was in a serious accident. I was knocked out for 4minutes and taken to E.D- I suffered serious facial lacerations and a CT scan later showed I had fractured my skull in several places and received facial fractures. I was kept in hospital for one week, having daily post traumatic amnesia tests- this lasted four days- which is longer than anticipated.

Post accident face

I was transferred to a specialised Head Trauma facility at Wakari- the focus here was much more related to the Neurogenic fatigue management, physiotherapy and assistance with basic day to day activities. I was discharged on the 4th of June, with weekly visits to a Occupational therapist and Psychologist.

Previous to the accident I was supplementing my student income with a part time job , unfortunately due to continued pain & neurogenic issues related to the head trauma , I have had to give up my job To focus solely on finishing my degree.

I am determined to complete my degree this year, next to recovery it is the most important thing to me. I have recently made a graded return to study and have finalised my theme and desired outcome for my collection. Specialising in subversive menswear: I tend to design well outside the generic spectrum  and aim for an aesthetically questionable result.

Work

The recommended budget to allocate is $2,500. I had taken this into consideration and budgeted my weekly wages to achieving this, thus due to having to resign from my job I am now back to $0.00. I am not receiving any ACC wage support and financial support from family is not possible. I sourced a decent amount of my fabrics wholesale using a tax return ($140). I just require some financial support with specialty skills and services, as well as more fabric.

 itbegins

I will document my project and make that available for my supporters, via Instagram and Snapchat. For those interested, I will also be documenting all my upcoming facial surgeries. I promise my supporters my upmost commitment, my life really does revolve around completing this and producing something I can be proud of.

If all goes ahead, I invite you all to come to the end of year show and witness what your generosity has contributed to.

Thank you so much for reading this.

THEME PROPOSAL:

“Walk, don’t run” Graduate collection.

A lot of my inspiration for this collection comes from the past 3 months of my life, it draws on aspects of my experiences within the hospital system: this includes literal things and also feelings that I experienced during my time in hospital. Hospital garb and medical supplies wholly inspire my use of colour, textures and textiles. My intended silhouettes and fabrications come from a combination of hospital uniforms, janitorial uniforms and once again, some garments are attempted representations of feelings experienced by myself.

I’m looking at emphasis on the sterilisable and disposable nature of things. I am drawing a lot on the ‘institutional’ nature of things, systematic rituals and the idea of everyone and everything being processed “by the book”.

A vast amount of my research comes from numerous films such as Repo Man, 1984, Soylent Green and Metropolis; a common occurring theme in these films is that they all depict times/places operating under totalitarian rule: they depict a setting that is borderline Fictional ,yet very relatable and somehow not so impossible. These themes are evoking a bunch of design ideas, uniformity and also the idea of humans being inanimate, faceless, impersonalized objects.

My intention with my menswear collection is to encompass these themes and inspirations without translating too literally, I hope that my colour scheme and choice of materials will create a bold suggestion and statement.

I intend to use a variety of techniques to achieve my final outcome including : medical sutures as decorative embellishments, utilitarian style structures, opaque plastics, medical supplies, layering, exposure, padding, wrapping and printing.

The collection name “Walk, don’t run”, almost comes from a suggestion of mediocrity, not to expect much and teaches not to be disappointed by slow progress. The name attempts to suggest that it is OK to be fine with living at the same speed as everyone else, droning along as a grasp at only survival, nothing extravagant.
