Help Fiona Reach Madrid!

Project 2014-10-26 23:51:55 +1300

Hola!

I am Fiona Roberts and I am 15 years old. I go to Raphael House Rudolf Steiner School in Lower Hutt, Wellington and am currently in year 10. I am planning to go at the end of this year to study for 6 months in a Waldorf (Rudolf Steiner) School in Madrid, Spain – the school is called the ‘Escuela Libre Micael’.

I am a Kiwi but bilingual in Spanish and English, and have been from an early age because my mother Laura is from South America so she made a point of teaching and maintaining her native language with me. My mum was a co-founder of Arcoiris, the Spanish pre-school playgroup in Wellington, so this of course meant that I went there a couple of times a week, playing, learning Spanish songs and rhymes and of course speaking Spanish most of the time. I have also travelled to Latin America several times with my mum to visit family in Peru and passed through Argentina and Chile where my godmother lives.

Because I already speak Spanish you may be wondering why, if I already know the language, I want to go and study in Spain. I want to go there to deepen my knowledge of the language and culture and to experience learning in another language. Also I want to see the difference between Latin American Spanish and Spanish from Spain. I am aware that from my first day abroad I will have to face the challenge of living with a new family, in a new school and a new community. I am an enthusiastic learner open to new things and other cultures.

So thank you very much for reading this. I hope you are interested in pledging me part of the support that I need to achieve my goal. My costs for the whole 6 months will include school fees, board with my host family, travel, health insurance for one semester, and incidentals.

But I am asking for only 10% of the total through PledgeMe, that is $1,500 - so I would be grateful for your support.

I have been working hard on fund-raising and really appreciate the support I have already received from people who have offered me small jobs during the past few months and bought my baking. I just need to make a final effort - my motto is: “every little bit helps”

You will be able to follow my experience with the Spanish language later in a blog that I will set up to keep you all up to date. That will be my electronic log book.

Just before I go, I would like to say how grateful I am to be able to have this experience and to say a huge ‘thank you’ to my parents for all their constant encouragement and support.

ǃ Muchas Gracias !
