Dhargyey Buddhist Centre
Roof Repair
The Dhargyey Buddhist Centre, situated at 22 Royal Terrace, is the residence of the Lamas (teachers), some of the Centre’s ordained, lay supporters and guests. Due to the poor condition of the slate roof in recent months there have been significant leaks in the upstairs bedrooms. There are concerns that if the roof is not repaired in the immediate future that the bedrooms may become uninhabitable.
Due to the historical significance of the Centre, it carries a Historical Places Classification, and is now included in the Dunedin City Council District Heritage Features Schedule. The slate roof is at the end of its life; all the valleys and original nails are rusting out causing unforeseeable slippages, consequent water ingress, and damage to the top floor ceilings. The building also requires earthquake strengthening which means the tying of the roof to the tops of the walls. As slates are installed from the bottom up, this requires the complete removal of all the slates on any planes to be tied down – and that is virtually all of them.
To date we have raised nearly $60,000 mostly from within New Zealand Buddhist circles. However, the total cost is expected to reach up to $300,000.
About the Centre
The Dhargyey Buddhist Centre was established in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1984 as a charitable trust, with instruction from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and under the spiritual guidance of Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey. The main function of the Dhargyey Buddhist Centre is to encourage harmony and unity through the sharing of Buddhist philosophy. Teachings are available to anybody who is interested – free of charge. Many important lineage teachers of the Tibetan Buddhist Gelugpa tradition have visited and taught at the Centre, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1992 and 2013.
Your pledge will greatly assist us in moving a step closer to starting our repairs project, ensuring the continuation of teachings at our Centre, and the safety and wellbeing of our residents and students.
