Project 2011-08-09 00:00:00 +1200

With your help, Dailybeat.co.nz wants to get five New Zealand albums pressed onto vinyl. This is your chance to help make 5 kiwi band's dreams come true! Each of the five bands will get their album pressed on to a limited run of 200 vinyl records. Usually, it's far to expensive to get such limited runs pressed, so we're getting 5 done at once to help bring down the costs. For those of you who don't have a record player anymore you can still pledge and get a digital copy of the albums!

This is a fantastic way to support local talent. Now let's introduce the bands.

Band #1: Sora Shima from Hamilton.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epHpnfuYt2Q]

Sora Shima formed in early 2006 after Jae (guitar) and Gavin (drums)  met at a work Christmas party in December 2005 - immediately hatching the idea for an instrumental band. Their music is dynamic, atmospheric  sonic instrumental rock. They've been described in the press as things like "properly abstract, terrifyingly beautiful" and "dark and dreamy"  which are very encouraging descriptions.

Band #2: Second Gear Grind from Christchurch.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED_rgDorTxc]

Second Gear Grind was formed in 2005 by founding members Mike and Steve. Sharing a love of heavy yet melodic music, and being fed up with the lack of it in New Zealand the band was born. Their music is described as heavy, downtuned, fuzz laden stoner rock.

Band #3: Katie Thompson from Hokitika now based in the West Coast of the South Island

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgeMgPUvxn0]

Katie was a drummer in a high school band for a couple of years then  decided to learn guitar and write her own songs. From there she entered competitions around New Zealand and recorded her first album. So all in all she's been a singer/songwriter for around 10 years but it's only been the last couple of years that she's been pushing herself to make a career of it. Her music is a blend of pop, folk and country elements. A quote from Greg Haver “Katie is a really great singer with a hugely emotive voice. Her music is reminiscent of the current British folk sound of Laura Marling and Mumford and Sons, but what I like is that vocally she doesn’t really sound like anyone else.”

Band #4: Yebiisu from the beautiful Waitakere Ranges in Auckland

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GgPBUazQh8]

Yebiisu formed about 3 years ago, when Sims (bass) and Jamo (guitar) wrote some great songs together and needed a band of hypertalented minions to perform them alongside. They perform Dub Hop, taking influences of reggae, funk, rock, ska, hip-hop, and dub, and combining them in a cocktail of high-impact horniness.

Band #5:  Dick Dynamite and the Doppelgangers from Hamilton.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE51mjixtPY]

Dick Dynamite and the Doppelgangers developed in 2005, from a band called "Frogletter" that was based in Hamilton in the early 2000's. Their music is fast, energetic, 1950's influenced punk rock'n'roll.
