Teach The Teachers In The Himalayas

Project 2013-11-07 22:57:56 +1300

Hi my name is Louise Conwell.

I have the exciting opportunity to travel to Northern India in January 2014 with a group of nine New Zealand registered teachers as part of the Rata Teacher Support Foundation to live and work alongside untrained Indian teachers.

One of the goals of the Rata Foundation is to help educate children so the cycle of poverty can be broken.

For three weeks we'll share strategies and skills for teaching literacy, numeracy, classroom management and phonics.

This trip is entirely voluntary and self-funded, so your pledges will go towards the cost of my airfares and accommodation.

I love the idea that we are upskilling these communities in ways that will benefit them for future generations.

I hope you can help.

I have just returned from a planning weekend for this trip and it is going to be incredible. Thank you so much to everyone who has pledged so far, it won't be a waste of money.

So a few more details, we will be based in a town/city ? called Dehra Dun. This is where we will be working with the teachers. These teachers come from 7 different schools around this area and up into the Himalayas. The schools have been set up for slum dwellers and beggar children, many of whom are orphaned and very poor. The schoosl themselves have little or no resources and the teachers are all untrained.

I am part of a group of nine New Zealand teachers and we will be working intensively with 40 Indian teachers to give them strategies and ideas to make their classroom programmes more engaging, to teach numeracy and literacy and how to have fun while being a teacher. We will alos get to visit some of the schools where the teachers come from and see first hand the huge difference between these schools and our own.

It's going to be amazing, thank you all so much :) Lou

Thank you
