Waka's Career

Project 2013-01-28 01:10:39 +1300

Waka Rowlands is a charismatic 17 year old from Wainuiomata. Waka is an incredibly gifted actor who needs a bit of financial support to attend a big opportunity. This is the story:

Two years ago, I was auditioning in schools in Porirua and Wainuiomata to find the lead actor for a short film called Lambs that I was making. After auditioning a staggering 80 kids I still hadn't found the right person for the role. The final school we went to was Wanuiomata High School. Waka was one of only four boys who turned up. He hadn't received the audition scripts so didn't know the lines. So we taught him the scene in the room and then were blown away by his ability to exist in the moment and his emotional courage. I texted the producer immediately: "We've found him."

Waka's performance helped the film win official selection in some of the biggest film festivals of the world - Berlin, Clermont-Ferrand, Melbourne, Uppsala. Lambs also won the Jury Prize and Audience Award at the 2012 New Zealand International Film Festival. Waka's performance was universally praised as brave, compelling, and honest. He even made the front page of the Dominion Post.

You can check out the preview of Lambs here.

Waka has recently finished Year 12 at Wainuiomata High School and more than anything wants to pursue acting. New Zealand's best acting teacher (in my opinion), Miranda Harcourt, has offered Waka a place in her acting class this term. Miranda has worked as an acting coach with Peter Jackson, Jane Campion, and Hollywood directors. This is an incredible opportunity for Waka to study with the best and give him the tools to excel on the national and world stage. Miranda has also kindly offered to donate towards his tuition costs. Details of the course can be found here.

All that remains is $530 plus $100 travel costs (and a small Pledgeme success fee). Waka and his family aren't in the financial situation to be able to cover his course costs. But if everyone gives a little, we can do this!! We can give Waka the opportunity to start his career in New Zealand and beyond... to become our next Cliff Curtis! Please become a part of Waka's success, and lets give him a chance to soar. Thanks!!

UPDATE:

We are over the line!! A massive thank you to everyone who has donated to Waka's Career! I'm calling Waka this afternoon to tell him, he's going to be stoked!

Any money raised over the $690 will go towards other learning opportunities for Waka. We are currently talking with Taki Rua - NZ's leading Maori theatre company - about an internship for Waka. Extra money could help cover his expenses for this, such as travel. So more donations would still help Waka a lot!
