Woolsheds are a familiar sight on the New Zealand landscape, but the original working sheds are disappearing fast. Due to recent changes in sheep farming and land use, early woolsheds and their histories are being lost.
We invite you to help us publish a book that will explore and document the history of New Zealand woolsheds and the contributions station and farm workers have made to the success of the wool trade, and the economy, in New Zealand.
This large-format book of exceptional photographs by Jane Ussher, one of New Zealand's best known photographers, takes a close look inside our historic woolsheds and farm buildings, and brings their stories to life. The book is written by leading academic Dr. Annette O'Sullivan of Massey University School of Design.
Our goal is to not only document the surviving early buildings, but also the tools, equipment, wool bale stencils, and early brands found in them. The book will record the impact the 180-year-old wool industry has had on New Zealand and celebrate its place in our farming and economic history.
The book will go on sale late 2025, priced at around $85.

As the researcher and writer for the book on historic New Zealand woolsheds I want to say a huge thank you to you for supporting this project.
We were absolutely delighted when the PledgeMe campaign reached our target. This will pay for photography and production costs and will mean the project can now go ahead. It has been particularly heartening to read your words of encouragement.
Behind the campaign has been a dedicated team who have never failed to believe in the importance of this work. I wish to thank Sue Elliot from Massey University, and Leigh Catley, Celia Lemhouse and Rebecca Flannery from Federated Farmers.
We will do our very best to honor your generosity by producing a beautiful historical record of New Zealand’s magnificent woolsheds. Thank you for your part in making this happen.
Warm regards
Annette O’Sullivan

Fantastic to be this close to our goal! Thanks to everyone who has supported us to get this important book underway.
PLEASE forward this on to anyone else you think should be involved - remember your support of this book will be recognised in the finished book.
Show you support for the history of wool - and it's future.
Thank you.
