The Reality Of Climate Change - Why Geology Holds The Answer

Summary
My name is Mark Webster and I am a Petroleum Geologist, a father, an environmentalist and apparently a climate change denier. I have worked around the world for 35 years and witnessed very real environmental degradation – the acrid air, stinking waterways, snowdrifts of plastic; I give thanks daily that I was born on this isolated, lightly populated set of islands we call Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Like any other New Zealander, I want my kids, and future generations, to have happy and fulfilling lives and opportunities to learn, work and develop here. I recently wrote a brief review of climate change for friends and family to counter the incessantly negative, destructive, divisive and misleading messages being issued by so called environmental groups.
My primary concern is that a generation has been raised in an environment of fear and anxiety that is unwarranted and unjustifiable. Petroleum geoscientists and engineers are some of the most informed people in climate change – it is our job to understand these processes – yet have been excluded from the IPCC assessments that are having such profound effects on our society. This dogma is now finding it’s way into our schools (as “available resources to assist teachers”). Those of us who disagree the science is settled are prevented from responding via mainstream media, so this is one avenue to try and balance the information flow.
I now plan to expand the scope and detail of the note in a book. This will not claim to be a definitive scientific text on Climate Change, but rather an easily understood overview to explain:
1. How many variables are involved in climate;
2. How little data we actually have on many of these;
3. The relative scale of human activity in earth processes;
4. Major flaws in IPCC climate models;
5. Why carbon dioxide is not a villian;
6. Why we should be giving our children a message of optimism rather than despair
I have established a Pledge Me fund ( https://www.pledgeme.co.nz/projects/6521-the-reality-of-climate-change) to achieve the following:
1. Research and publish a Climate Change book written from a geological perspective. A draft Table of Contents is shown on the next page. This will utilise NZ data where possible to illustrate points. We will source data / knowledge/ expertise from GNS, NIWA and other experts as necessary and the book will be peer-reviewed prior to publication.
2. Establish the Kauri Foundation and set up a website for dissemination of information. Unlike the mainstream media, we will allow contrary opinions and, in fact, will provide a forum for key decision makers to publicly document their positions and respond to questions.
Climate Change – a New Zealand Perspective
Proposed Table of Contents

Chapter 3 : Climate Drivers
Solar Radiation - Milankovitch cycles
- Gravity Variations
- Solar Activity
Crustal Heat Flow
Chapter 4 : Climate Indicators
Direct Temperature Measurements
- Ground Based
- Balloon Based
- Satellite Based
- Float Based
Ice Melt
Sea Level Rise
Chapter 5 : The Greenhouse Theory
