Repairing The Roof! - Auckland Old Folks Association Hall
Project 2017-01-16 18:35:14 +1300
The Auckland Old Folks Association was founded in 1945 to provide social services for the elderly in an inner-city neighbourhood of social, cultural and demographic diversity, particularly through fostering gatherings among its members “irrespective of status or creed” in a hall designed for that purpose.
The hall is an important resource for the community and artists in the K-Road area of Auckland. The Committee are raising funds to carry out important repairs on this much-loved building. The hall, built in 1953, is a classic piece of modernist architecture designed by Henry Kulka, who was Adolf Loos’s student and collaborator before arriving in New Zealand in 1939. However, like many buildings of its era, it is showing signs of wear, including leaks, and effective repair will require replacement of the asbestos roof.
Our priority is to replace the outside roofing which is the original asbestos. This will then allow us to permanently clean the ceiling. We have raised $43,000 towards this however we are still approx $4000 short. If we were to go beyond this target with our fundraising, any additional funds would go to the next maintenance priorities which include cleaning and painting the ceiling, painting the outside windows, replacing the power board, making the building fully accessible and, potentially, heating.
All who contribute to the fund will be acknowledged on the Old Folks Association website, and those contributing more than $10 will be invited to a party at the hall which will celebrate the successful repairs.
