Breaking news...

We're delighted to announce that we have welcomed on board an investor! David Taylor joins our advisory board and team, alongside Dr Kevin Sheehy and Dr Tom Mulholland. We're excited to be in to the next chapter in the story of Firstcheck. As a team we are busy working hard to improve access to quality healthcare by connecting Kiwis to New Zealand skin specialists.

We are stoked to have received investment but are conscious of what that means for this PledgeMe campaign - and we think it's only fair to close it.

Thanks so much to the PledgeMe team for your amazing support, and to those early adopters who have supported us here.

Yours in health,

Firstcheck (Hayden, Frank, Dee, Bronwen, Richard, Dr Kevin, Dr Tom & David)

BRINGING YOU...FIRSTCHECK

Bringing you Firstcheck New Zealand

New Zealand has the highest rate of skin cancer IN THE WORLD.

We want to help in the fight against skin cancer and break down the barriers and improve access to specialist skin advice. We want to put the tools and technology in the hands of all New Zealanders, so people are empowered to take control over their own skin health and wellbeing.

We’ve just launched a cutting edge app which offers low-cost, quick and easy advice from the most qualified skin specialists in New Zealand.

Firstcheck means that with a couple of clicks and a couple of pics you can have a dermatologist or skin specialist review your skin concern, anonymously from the comfort of home.

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM HERE?

Here is the reality:

  • Skin cancer is by far the most common cancer affecting New Zealanders
  • Skin cancers account for just over 80% of all new cancers each year
  • 69,000 Kiwis are diagnosed with skin cancer every year
  • Dermatologists are at the front line of diagnosing and treating skin cancer - but there is a severe shortage of dermatologists in the public health system, and a significant shortage overall
  • Many people who need the skill of a dermatologist are therefore waiting long periods or going without
  • Early detection saves lives - the sooner a skin cancer is identified and treated, the better the odds of a good outcome.

SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

Well, that's pretty much the question we started out this journey asking. We read the literature, we absorbed the horrific stats, and we asked, "What if there was a better way?"

And so we developed Firstcheck. Firstcheck is a cutting edge app that gives users low-cost, quick and easy access to the most qualified skin specialists in New Zealand.

Firstcheck, putting the tools in your hands

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Using everyday technology that most New Zealanders have access to - smartphones and tablets. Then it's as easy as a couple of clicks, a couple of pics, and selecting a dermatologist or skin specialist to review your concern.

You just:

  1. Install the super easy- to-use app from the iOS or Android app store.
  2. Take a couple of photos of the mole, rash or area of skin you're concerned about
  3. Choose which New Zealand dermatologist or skin specialist you want to review your case
  4. Pay a consultation fee of $19.95 (maximum) via PayPal or credit card
  5. Sit back and relax. You'll hear back from your specialist within 72 hours.

So you can have anonymous, expert skin advice from the comfort of home. No appointments, no waiting lists, no need to leave home - just affordable specialist advice the first time.

Easy right?

You can also use a Firstcheck SkinScope™ which is designed to pair with the Firstcheck app to enable you to take a highly-magnified photo of your area of skin concern. Your Firstcheck SkinScope™ lets you take 20x magnified dermoscopic photos so you can provide your dermatologist with even more information (although it is not needed for an initial assessment).

A BIT ABOUT THE TEAM BEHIND FIRSTCHECK

It all started in Taranaki (which happens to have the highest rate of melanoma in New Zealand).

Original co-founders Hayden and Frank asked themselves how could people with skin concerns gain more control over their health and wellbeing, and then set about creating a tool to empower users to do that via smartphones and tablets.

And so, in Kiwi DIY fashion, Firstcheck was born.

The Firstcheck team of Hayden, Frank, Dee, Dr Tom Mulholland and Bronwen have developed Firstcheck into the cutting-edge tool it is today.

The team are also extremely grateful for the generous support of Dr Ian Coutts of the New Zealand Dermatology and Skin Cancer Centre, Wellington.

Of course the broader 'team' incorporates New Zealand registered dermatologists, skin specialists and GP skin cancer doctors - New Zealand's skin experts.

Firstcheck co founders, Hayden and Frank

SO, WHAT NEXT?

Well, that's where you come in.

We want to put the tools and technology in the hands of all New Zealanders, so people are empowered to take control over their own skin health and wellbeing.

The app has now been launched, our dermatologists have begun accepting cases via Firstcheck - and it has been used 'on the road' in Dr Tom Mulholland's mobile clinic, Dr Tom on a Mission.

Dr Tom on a Mission

We have the support of great New Zealand's skin specialists. We have recently attended an international dermatology conference in Noosa. We are featuring in a District Health Board (DHB) clinical trial. We were selected and sponsored by the Ministry of Health to exhibit as a Kiwi digital health start-up at an international medical expo justy a few weeks ago.

But we need your help.

We want you to make this app yours and to have a say in how you take control of your skin health and wellbeing. We also want you to provide feedback on the app and to suggest improvements and potential future app features. (Our email address is [email protected] J). Prizes for the best app feature recommendation.

Like any ambitious start-up project, we also need to spend more time and money on web and app development, including adopting your feedback and further improving your user experience.

We can get there with your help. Will you help us go the final mile to make it happen?

Want to improve access to New Zealand’s leading skin specialists? Want to join us in the fight against skin cancer?

Firstcheck - a cut above the rest! Delighted to receive recognition of Firstcheck’s unique and superior offering from Melanoma Patients Australia Ltd and Professor Peter Soyer (who is internationally recognised in the field of dermatology). Thank you!

We couldn't agree more that assessments using a healthcare professional are the best - which is why our skin specialists are at the heart of what we do at Firstcheck.

It gives us great pleasure to now make available, to consumers, the tools that the medical profession use every day.
