We're so thrilled with the support we've received so far - thank you! Since we've passed our inital goal of $3,000, our new stretch goal is this: if we raise $4,000, we'll print as many books as we can and donate them to libraries around New Zealand.
What's Creative Commons?
Creative Commons is a global movement that seeks to realise the potential of the internet: nothing less than free, open and universal access to the world's research, educational resources, data and culture.
Creative Commons provides free copyright licences that are both legally robust and human-readable. These licences give everyone from individual creators to large institutions a simple, standardised way to keep their copyright while allowing certain uses of their work — a “some rights reserved” approach to copyright — which makes their creative, educational, and scientific content instantly more compatible with the full potential of the internet. The combination of our tools and our users is a vast and growing digital commons, a pool of content that can be copied, distributed, edited, remixed, and built upon, all within the boundaries of copyright law.
Creative Commons also argues for the use of open licensing, especially for publicly funded or publicly housed copyright works. At the moment, there are millions of publicly funded copyright works that aren't freely and openly available for reuse. We working to change that, for the benefit of everyone.
Copyright was created long before the emergence of the internet, and can make it hard to legally perform actions we take for granted: copy, paste, dowload, edit source, and post to the web. To realise the potential of the internet, someone needed to provide a free, public, and standardised legal infrastructure that makes it easy to give and get permission; that creates a balance between the reality of the internet and the reality of copyright laws. That someone is Creative Commons.
Creative Commons Aotearoa New Zealand
We at Creative Commons Aotearoa New Zealand are the kaitiaki of the NZ Creative Commons licences that enable the voluntary sharing of copyright material in Aotearoa. We've been here in NZ for a few years now and have helped foment a quiet, very legal, and very well-behaved revolution.
Creative Commons licensing is being adopted across many sectors of NZ society: government, research, schools, arts, heritage, and data. We're creating a book that sets out the development of these important changes, what's happening now, and what it means; including case studies from all over the country and essays from experts. We'll be publishing A Quiet Revolution: Growing Creative Commons in Aotearoa New Zealand later this year as an ebook, but we'd love to be able to have a print run as well. That's where you come in: the book has been written, edited, designed and is being typeset, and now we just need the funds to hit 'print'.

We need at minimum $3,000. Pledging just $25 or more will get you your copy (we need a bit more if you're overseas, please). This book won't be in shops, so if you want a copy for your very own, pledging to this campaign is the only way to do it. We aim to have the books printed and delivered to you in time for Christmas, so why not order a couple while you're at it and give one as a gift?

Our campaign has now finished, and we're thrilled to have reached our stretch goal - we ended up raising $4,017! Thank you so much to each and every one of you.
We're now finishing off the typesetting and are busy getting a print run set up so we can get your books to you in time for Christmas.

Wow, we're over two thirds of the way there! Thank you so much to everyone who has supported our campaign.
We've just created a new reward: pledge $50 and get a copy of A Quiet Revolution: Growing Creative Commons in Aotearoa for yourself, plus we'll donate a copy to a NZ library of your choice. And your name will be mentioned with special honour in the acknowledgements as a library donor.
If we manage to keep up this great momentum and exceed our goal of $3,000, we'll spend the extra cash on printing as many books as we can and sending them to as many Kiwi libraries as possible.

It was so lovely to see many of you at National Digital Forum conference last week - and to see the cover image of our book front and centre of the PledgeMe presentation in Soundings Theatre at Te Papa!
