Anyone who pledges and chooses a certificate as a reward will get virtual recognition on our site.

Who are we?

GayOk is a queer support group focusing on youth, we are currently networking with other organisations in the region, including schools, and other organisations across New Zealand. GayOk's is an incorporated society consisting of 15 signed members, the founder, Jason Gerbes (Chairman) is currently studying at Karamu High School in Hastings and has a large involvement with queer youth in this region. Jason also has learnt a lot from experience coming out and starting GayOk. Jason is supported by Lloyd Mason (Finance & Secretary), who is a member of GayOk currently studying at EIT Taradale in Hawkes Bay and also has learnt a lot through coming out  and through his evolvement with GayOk.

We have a private group on Facebook (click here to visit, contact Jason to join), which currently has 112 members, 14 of those are signed members of the group, we also have a Facebook page which is open to anyone (click here to visit). We also have a website, which can be found here, where you can find articles on queer issues, a forum and many other galleries.

We include everyone, so that even though we are a queer group we follow the QSA model (http://www.qsanetwork.org.nz) and offer support to straight youth as well.

QSA Hui 2012 (Jason in back)

GayOk is actively involved in the community, Jason and Lloyd have attended; The Big Gay Out 2012, The QSA Hui 2012, The Condom Card Scheme. GayOk has networked with organisations such as Directions, a local free youth health provider, The QSA Network, Rainbow Youth, GayNZ, The Hawkes Bay DHB and many more other wonderful community organisations and individuals.

Both Jason and Lloyd are certified practitioners of the condom card scheme and attended diversity workshops at the QSA Hui 2012, other members bring in their specialised skills and support for each other.

Where are we located?

GayOk is located in Parkvale, Hastings and operate from the Direction centre in Hastings and the Family Planning centre in Napier. GayOk services the Hawkes Bay region, however that does not prevent people from outside our region from coming to us, our Facebook group and website are also for anyone.

What we are doing in the community?

We are currently in the process of establishing our presence and will be offering events, education programs, support packages for the community, an advance support website and working with local businesses.

On the 1st September the Condom Card Scheme will be available, Jason and Lloyd will be able to prescribe cards to youth, give out sexual health information and direct youth to the appropriate organisations. The Condom Card Scheme is a program offered by the DHB, the card allows youth to get a free condom pack from selected pharmacies (12 condoms, 12 lube and health information) and the card has 11 uses.

GayOk is also setting up QSA groups in schools around the region including; Karamu High School, EIT Polytech and Hastings Girls High.

Another organisation GayOk is involved in is the Diversity Liaison program run by the Police Department. This program has liaison officers around the country who are trained in dealing with issues involving diversity, such a queer youth.
