About the Mangatowai Community Marae

Who we are

In 2003 a Whangaroa farmer donated land to the Maori whanau who had once owned it. That whanau set up a Community Trust in 2006. This Trust has relocated the original Whare Hui (meeting house), which was in a dilapidated state, to rebuild it as a community centre. The Trust comprises local business leaders and members of the whanau: Dave Henare, kaumatua (elder), Waimahana; Terry Smith, businessman and Chair, Kaeo; Dr. Sylvia van Altvorst, psychiatrist, Whangarei; Dr. Ella Henry, academic, Auckland; Doug Turner, retired businessman, Whangaroa; Anne Goldsberry, businesswoman, Taupo Bay.

See our website at www.mangatowai.maori.nz and we have facebook group http://www.facebook.com/groups/mangatowai.marae/  for descendents of Ngahuia and Mihipo of Waimahana.

What we hope to achieve

So far the Trust has raised $150,000 to move the original Whare Hui to the new site and begin renovations, to commission carvings for the Marae, and to start the site works. We need to raise $15,000 for site plans for the next stage of development. This will enable us to apply for further funding to complete the ablution blocks, storage and dining facilities.

We are building a concrete retaining wall beside the Whare Hui. This wall will be named after one of our ancestors, Nga Whetu, which means ‘The Stars’ in Maori. Embedded in the wall will be smooth gray stones from our beach at Waimahana.

How you can help

For a pledge of $20, you can have your name, or someone else’s, engraved on one of those stones. You will be honoured and remembered on ‘The Stars’ wall at Mangatowai Marae. Help build a community marae and become a ‘Rock Star’.
