Woods From The Trees

Project 2014-05-09 10:06:52 +1200

Like most of you out there, we want to see great things happen in Christchurch.

We are Brown Bread, a little Christchurch-based start up and have partnered with NZ artist Regan Gentry to create a public art sculpture for Christchurch in the heart of the city called Woods from the Trees. We are excited about what the city's developments and want to contribute to its cultural fabric, and we need your help making the sculpture a reality for Christchurch! We are almost there, we just need a little extra push to get it over the line.

SO ... WHAT EXACTLY IS 'WOODS FROM THE TREES'?

Woods from the Trees is a three-piece eight metre tall sculpture to be installed on the corner of Tuam and High Streets in late June (all going to plan!).

Bringing a little nature back into the central city, Woods from the Trees uses native Rimu waste wood salvaged from earthquake-damaged homes. The trees are visually reminiscent of the original species milled to make the buildings that have been demolished. Cool, eh?

A (SUPER ENGAGING) PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME

We want to encourage others to do the same and help turn Christchurch into an interesting and creative place with quality and enduring art. We want to show that anyone (even us with no art project management experience!) can make something happen in this city of opportunity.

We are creating a public education programme for anyone who wants to take action and make good stuff happen in Christchurch. Visit our blog for more information: woodsfromthetrees.tumblr.com

WHAT DO WE NEED TO 'MAKE WOODS FROM THE TREES' A REALITY FOR CHRISTCHURCH?

To make this project a reality we have been talking to potential funders, sponsors and anyone who’ll listen to help get this project off the ground. We have attracted some great support from our partners but we've got a small funding gap to bring this baby home. This is where you come in …

To get Woods from the Trees over the line we require $20,000. This money will go towards maintenance and removal of the work. As well as helping, you get to own a small part of the project. Vote with your wallet on more quality art in Christchurch. Do you want to see more of this kind of stuff?

A huge thanks to our sponsors:

DOC, City Care, Leighs Construction, Butterfield Construction, McCarthy, SignBiz, Federal Print, C1 Espresso, Smash Palace, Creative New Zealand, Christchurch City Council, Phil Price, Miranda Parkes, Neil Dawson, Alistair Blair and Michael and Maureen Moore.

Tree transplanting is beginning....

Dear Woods From the Trees Pledgers

A quick update!  Regan's tree-transplanting officially began today with the digging of three holes, for three eight metre Rimu Trees on the corner of High and Tuam streets.  Here is Regan and his trusty assistant, Alistair - hard at work, trying desperately to navigate the electicals, waste water and sewer pipes to prepare for the arrival of his trees.

The Rimu trees are nearing completion - here is a shot of the 'tree tops' before they are brought into town next Tuesday, along with their trunks, to be installed.  Regan will then have 10 days to add more 'foliage' to them.   It truly is a project of possiblity - where a house made of Rimu has transformed into Rimu trees made of a house.
