Spinal Rehab Study

I wish to fund to cover the expenses of travel and accommodation required to be part of an important study into spinal-cord injury rehabilitation at Burwood spinal unit in Christchurch. During this time I will make a sound and visual journal of the programme that will be turned into a performance a recording, and an exhibition.
Pledgers will be able to download the recording, attend the performance and of course visit the exhibition installation at the audio foundation in November 2014 (it will run for 3 weeks). I will need to relocate from Auckland to Christchurch for just over three months (around 13 weeks). This will mean paying for accommodation that can house myself and a caregiver, relocating all my equipment, and providing travel expenses to rotate caregivers from my team from Auckland to work with any available Christchurch caregivers. This is because there is a drastic shortage of caregivers in Christchurch, and we are unable to put together a team down there.
There is also a drastic shortage of accommodation in Christchurch, especially that which has the facilities that my needs as a tetraplegic require. This accommodation needs to be accessible, and have a layout that a wheelchair can navigate easily, and a wet area shower/bathroom.
The study program itself is an exciting opportunity to be part of an intense physiotherapy rehabilitation program that works on one of two groups. Either the upper body or a full body programme is assigned to each subject, and they are put through a rigourous program of three hours sessions, three days a week. The sessions include tredmill training, hand cycling, functional electrical stimulation, pully weight training. The results and outcomes of the study over three months recorded and analysed between Burwood and the University of Melbourne (a sponsor of the scipa project)
The accommodation in Christchurch at the moment is a premium, and I will need $9000 just to cover rent for that period. The accommodation available is Ranui house, which can provide all the facilities and support that we will need throughout the duration of the study. I will also need to pay to bring a special hi-lo single bed, to make it as easy as possible the duration of the stay for my caregivers to do the tasks and duties required for my cares, so in summary the three-month study program expenses will be:
Relocation travel expenses (including van and equipment); caregiver flights for weekend roster; accommodation (myself plus caregiver support in one unit); bed rental; transport costs.
The total costs for everything to do with the project comes to $ 17,328.00. Savings and other contributions come to $ 7,080.00, so it leaves a shortfall of $ 10,248.00 (I have not calculated for things such as food etc as they are obviously just part of general living costs I would be incurring anyway).
If through pledge me I could raise around $8500.00 that will definitely make it a reality.

Been a while since I updated you with where I am up to. The SCIPA study finished last year, and I have since been working with the sound, video and data files to make works towards the installation at the Audio Foundation.
The exhibition will open on the 6th November, 5.30pm and you are all invited. The Audio Foundation is at 4 Poynton Tce, Auckland (off Pitt St, and underneath the Parisian tie factory).
The installation will be a collection of sound, video, object, and image works installed for three weeks. There will be performances through the duration of the installation. I will notify all about these as they are scheduled.
The video links in this message are clips of a session during the SCIPA rehab program, with sound added made from sound files, samples, and processed data captured during the sessions.
I will put up a facebook page to post further updates as well as use this list.

Hello everybody,
first of all let me express my sincere thanks and gratitude for all your kind donations.
I can now let you all know that I was able to take up the SCIPA spinal-cord rehabilitation study, and was involved in the full-body program. This meant treadmill training, trunk training, and functional electrical stimulation cycling.
Up until now I have not been able to disclose any information about the program as it was a blind study, and essential that the assessor remained blind to whether or not I was involved in the full body, or upper body program.
My final (blind) assessment was last week (so now all can be revealed), so I thought I should write and finally let you all know that it went ahead and I will be getting on with my projects related to the study from now on.
We captured quite a bit of video and sound material, and I will start arranging that into performance and exhibition material, as well as turning it into a collection of downloadable recordings.
I hope to have some of these recordings finished, and have a performance early in the new year.I will be working towards the exhibition opening at the audio foundation in Auckland in August 2014.
I will also look at posting some of the raw footage from the program online so you can see what we were doing down there.
It has been extremely beneficial, and I am now able to continue a slightly lesser version of the program up here iln Auckland. I am able to do the treadmill training with half the people needed as was in Christchurch, and on a treadmill that is not so sophisticated. This in no way would have been possible without doing the program in Christchurch first
Again, thank you for your support and I will keep you posted with further developments on the recordings, performance, and exhibition.
