About

Wellington Local Honey!!!

Project 2013-05-06 01:53:33 +1200

Its simple, sweet and delicious! This project is destined to bring you good things. Help us out with a pledge towards an rooftop beehive and we will make your life sweeter!

The population of the sweet honey bee around the world has plummeted, and this project will put the power to save them in your hands. By bringing honey production into the inner city we will beautify the city; improve the diversity and density of local flora and fauna; create a few jobs, and best of all, make delicious New Zealand honey for you to enjoy!

Its easy to help out. You can even do so from the comfort of your home, without getting smoke in your eyes! We already have three beehives in Central Wellington, and a store that sells all sorts of delicious honey on Cuba Street. But we thought that it would be a good idea to invite everyone in New Zealand to get involved, so that we can really pump up the population.

  • The goal of this project is to get 10 beehives onto sites in Wellington, so that people can see them, benefit from free pollination; and eventually enjoy a taste of local honey!

We would love to have Beehives at the Beehive; and with your help we can make this happen. The first round will get hive sites started; and the next rounds will see us lobbying MPs and Councillors to open up public spaces; including the roof of the Beehive itself.

Each hive costs $250 to set up, register and manage for the year, including treatments and government fees. The first stage of this project is to get the hive gear into place and find more people who want honey from their own backyards. Once these are in place, the next level will be to get more workshops and educational courses happening, and eventually; Beehives on the Beehive!

First we need the gear, so get Pledging!!!

Each pledge is a step to the goal; and you get an amazing reward! Massive amounts of delicious honey; gift certificates for our store, free tickets to our Wellington on A Plate Event, even your very own personalised beehive for your own garden, or someone elses!

We are working with a number of beekeepers in the region; and also with Melbourne City Rooftop Honey and The Sydney Rooftop Collective, to put together cool things and really create a buzz around town!

Share this with your friends, family and anyone you think will love the idea and want to help!

Really good to hear from you. . I am very conscious of the pressure that honey bees are under, how few of them we see now, and how crucial bees are .I was just thinking over the weekend about encouraging more bees into Wellington and what we as a Council could do to facilitate and support that concept. I would be delighted to discuss it further. - Andy Foster

What a gorgeous idea! I will put my thinking cap on! - Stephanie Cook

Good luck! - Helene Ritchie

Kia ora,

Our facebook person passed on your details to me to get in touch. I am the advisor that works on bee issues with our MP Steffan Browning.

We have been busy little bees ourselves on this issue recently and more to come.

Great that you have jumped up with this idea of beehive on the beehive. We have been talking about this internally here for a while so are absolutely 100% behind you.

Thanks,
