Zeenya Clothing: NZ's Happiest Activewear Goes 100% Homegrown

Project 2023-09-25 19:47:03 +1300

Textured rectangle with the word "Introduction" as a heading

Since Zeenya Clothing was born in 2014, we've been making our activewear in Brazil. In 2018 we shifted our Core Range production to New Zealand, and now it’s time to move our Sport Range home too.

The past 3 years have been challenging for many small businesses, and we’re no exception. Brazil currently feels like 3 planets away, not just 3 plane rides.

We’ve found it difficult to be able to respond to the changing economic climate, improve our fit, and create new styles with the distance between the two countries.

So we're moving our Sport Range production to New Zealand.

Holy smokes. It's happened! Thank you so much to everyone who has pledged or shared this campaign. We're busy getting things organised for the launch party on the 16th of November. We even added that as a new pledge option if you want to grab a ticket and join us to celebrate. Think live music, delicious food and drinks and a fun night out.

What will we do with extra funds raised? If we can get over the $32,000 we're going to invest in a heat press and printer so we can upgrade our garment branding. Goodbye sometimes scratchy tags on the hems!

The technology is really cool, and we can use a fabric that stretches and moves with the print it's on. Less tags, less waste. Oh yeah!

This is an example of what a heat press looks like. Just in case you were curious.

Years ago we had the dream that if Zeenya got big enough, we’d be in the position to employ migrant and refugee women here in New Zealand.

So when the opportunity arose to work with Nisa in Wellington, it was a cosmic alignment moment *cue angelic voices singing*.

Nisa’s values align right alongside ours. We all deeply care about the people we work with, and want to leave a legacy of empowered women in New Zealand.

More than half the funds raised on this campaign will be used to purchase fabric, and get it on a ship from Brazil to New Zealand.

A big part of the work behind the scenes will involve getting specialist support for bringing our marketing and messaging, website, and SEO into alignment with being 100% New Zealand Made.

Textured background with the heading "Flexibility & Sustainability"

Moving our manufacturing will achieve three things:

1. Better wages: Using Nisa to manufacture our clothing means we're paying a New Zealand living wage for our garment construction and also helps keep dollars in our local economy.

2. More flexibility: Having a New Zealand manufacturer means we can cut and produce in smaller runs to better suit the demand of our customers, which also helps to reduce textile waste.

3. Sustainability: Your support means we'll have access to the funds to put fabrics on a ship to get to us (rather than air freight). That process takes more than 2 months from port to port, but by getting into this ordering cycle we can greatly reduce the environmental impact of our production.

The people who wear our brand do it with such pride that they’ll talk to anyone else dressed in colour. Friends of Zeenya make connections with new people at events purely because they’re wearing our clothing.

They know that the Zeenya values of kindness and inclusion mean they’re going to be received with a friendly response.

We’ve even had people from Instagram become in-person mates all through a love of movement and colour!

Two Zeenya wearers meet up in Christchurch and have a photo together

Zeenya has an almost cult-like following in some places around the country. True story: Our head of Colour, Chloe was talking to a friend, and someone interrupted and asked, “are you talking about Zeenya? That’s like a cult!”

He was pretty embarrassed once he knew who he was now in conversation with. But we’re also (not-so) secretly proud. Cult might be a little strong, but we know we have incredible customers.

Textured heading that says "Need a dopamine hit? Just add colour"

Our big dream is that we want everyone to know that fitness and health looks different to all of us.

Women especially are told that our value comes from how we look. Zeenya is a brand that inspires us to move and feel good regardless of how our bodies look. We want to bring joy into your workout as you shimmy, stretch or stride.

3 women in bright activewear (2 standing, 1 sitting in a wheelchair) laugh together

Our community already knows the power of colour. It makes us feel great to throw on our brightest gear and move.

Because science.

Colour has the power to lift and change our mood. We know that sometimes finding the motivation to work out can be hard. We all need a little extra lift to get going. So if you’re reading this and thinking, yeah, duh. Apologies, as you were, you bright thing you.

Textured background with the heading "Improved Fit"

We’ve been working on improving the fit of our Sport Range. They’re going to be out-of-this-world comfortable. But this change in production does mean some design changes for our colour-lovers.

This means the new widely loved, double side pockets are here to stay (yay!), but the flip side is that the zip pocket in the Running Shorts, Running Capri and Running Leggings will have to go.

With this change includes a flat-lock stitch which allows an even smoother feel to your luscious leggings.

We’re confident that the new fit and different waistbands will have you absolutely loving your new gear.

Image of clothing on racks with sign saying "NZ's Happiest Activewear"

There will be a price increase to produce these styles, a living New Zealand wage is much different to that of Brazil.

With a new manufacturer comes an improvement to availability. All going to plan, we’ll have more options in your size available for longer.

Smaller runs and more frequent releases are on the horizon. Top ups of the Sport Range are now going to be a reality. Oh - and matching splashback singlets for Sport Range. Hooray!

Textured background with heading saying "Rewards"

All pledges on this campaign are made at the current prices. Remember, our prices will be rising when we launch future collections - this is your last chance to get them at this price!

Payment for the rewards isn't due until the campaign ends on the 5th of November, because if we don't get the full amount, we go home empty handed.

STORE CREDIT

We get it - you don’t know what designs we’re choosing yet, and that’s a bit risky.

So at every reward level where you’re pledging for a piece of clothing, there is also the option to hold it for store credit that you can use on any items in our online store. We’ll send you a voucher code to buy something you do like from a future collection.

NAME OUR FIRST NZ SPORT RANGE

Image of 5 women wearing bright clothing with an old collection name "Limitless Sport"

All pledges are greatly appreciated by us. And we love a bit of creative licence. Every backer, big or small, will have the opportunity to put forward a name for our first collection.

We reserve the right to veto offensive names, but otherwise all suggestions are fair game.

BRING BACK A UNICORN PRINT

This is your opportunity to vote for the print that got away. You know, the one that sold out within minutes, or the one that was gone before you found us. Nicknamed in our Zeenya’s Activewear Anonymous Facebook Group as Unicorns, this is your chance to cast your vote to bring back a fave.

Every supporter on this level or above will have the opportunity to cast their vote for this.

We reserve the right to opt for the next favourite if any of the top options aren’t available.

Here are some past examples, but we’ll offer you the top 50 to choose from!

YOUR NAME ON OUR GAZEBO WALL

Our gazebo is currently on its last legs. With your help we’ll be able to get a new one - all branded up saying we’re 100% NZ Made. And this? Is the perfect opportunity to say thank you to you, amazing human, and put your name up in lights. Well, sunlight (or rain or whatever the NZ weather decides that day).

We’ve got a fantastic design in mind to have your name on one of the walls. Which means when you come and see us at events you’ll be able to say “look Mum, that’s me!” and we’ll give you a high 5 or a hug.

Anyone who pledges over $25 will have their name included on one of the walls of our event gazebo.

It'll be like this but Zeenya-fied!

Pledges at this level also get to vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

GET YA HEAD IN THE GAME

What’s life without a little sweat? And a little mystery!  Supporting at this level gets you an extremely limited edition headband in one of the gorgeous new prints (yet to be revealed) in this first range. Headbands prints are a lucky dip!

This headband will be lovingly made by Ali from Zeenya HQ and includes delivery.

Pledges at this level also get their name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

DISCOUNTS

Get 50% off your next pair of Running Shorts, Running Capri, Running Leggings or Racer Back Singlet. To be redeemed online or at an event. Excludes postage. Style examples shown, prints will differ.

Running Shorts are just-above-the-knee length and feature 2 deep side pockets.

Running Capri are just-below-the-knee length and feature 2 deep side pockets.

Running Leggings are a 7/8th length and feature 2 deep side pockets.

Pledges at this level also get their name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

FIRST DIBS

Grab your pair of Running Shorts, Running Capri, or Running Leggings and be the first to wear the luscious new fit. Available in limited numbers for our original price, includes postage within New Zealand, additional postage may be due for international orders. Racer Back Singlets are also available. They're made from our luscious quick dry fabric and we use our offcuts to create the ‘splash’ on the back of these racer back styles.

Sizes 8 to 22 available (but if you require something different just let us know). Click here for our size guide.

You’ll also have your name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

Remember if a print you love isn’t available, you can hold this for store credit.

ONYX LEGGINGS

We’ve never done these before and it’s extremely unlikely we’ll ever do them again.

These will be in the same style as our 7/8th length Running Legging with 2 deep side pockets. Sizes 8 to 22 available. The size guide is here. Pledge includes postage within New Zealand, additional postage may be due for international orders.

They’re so new, we don’t have a mock up yet, but the style and fit will match our standard Running Leggings.

You’ll also have your name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

INVITE TO THE PANTS PARTY

No, it’s not a party in someone else’s pants. It’s a party celebrating pants. And more specifically, leggings. Leggings party just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

With your ticket you’ll also receive a pair of leggings from the new range of your choice (this excludes the Onyx range as numbers of those pairs are limited to what’s available above).

Join us on Thursday the 16th of November at the Nisa workshop in Wellington City where we’ll hang out, enjoy food and drinks, meet the Nisa team and delight in all things colourful.

You’ll also have your name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

Attendees will also have an exclusive 20% off to spend on underwear made by Nisa

CUSTOM LENGTH ZEENYA'S (ANY SPORT RANGE STYLE, ANY LENGTH)

Making our Sport Range in New Zealand has a distinct advantage, and that for the first time we can offer you custom lengths for any of the Sport Range Styles (Running Shorts, Running Capri, Running Legging).

This pledge will get you 2 pairs of the same style in 1 or 2 prints of your choice at the length you want. Together we’ll create your ideal length in one style of Zeenya’s and we’ll keep your patterns on file for any future ordering. Includes postage within New Zealand, additional postage may be due for international orders.

Please note that this excludes Sport Skirts currently as we’re re-working their design so they’re even more delicious.

You’ll also have your name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

BE A PRINT CHOOSERER

That’s an official term by the way. Chooserer. As we get set to order our next prints to sail across the sea to us via ship, you’ll get to help.

Join a panel of 5 (including Chloe, our Head of Colour) and select the next ranges. She’ll teach you the ins and outs of picking a great print. And you’ll be able to reserve 2 items in any style (Sport Range or Core Range) from those chosen prints. Includes postage within New Zealand, additional postage may be due for international orders.

This process is done via video call with a beverage or two (adult or otherwise).

You’ll also have your name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

CHOOSE A DISCOUNT NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE

This option will set you up for 2 years to come. We’ll hook you up with a unique code just for you that means you’ll enjoy 20% off all purchases for 2 years.

Please note that each code can only be used by one customer. You'll receive 2 items from the next range (or hold credit until 2 become available that you love).

You’ll also have your name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

TEAM KIT? SORTED.

This one might be one to take to your team manager. For this pledge we’ll outfit a team of up to 15 people in bottoms, crops and either a tee or tank of your choice. We’ll work with you to select the print from our available range. We’ll also include screenprinting of up to 3 logos and NZ delivery.

You’ll also have your name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

THE RAINBOW LEVEL

Honestly, to pledge at this level we couldn’t thank you enough. You’re a next level colour lover and our new VIP. As a thank you for your generosity you’ll get 50% off all orders for 3 years and free delivery NZ wide.

You can expect big hugs and cuppa anytime we catch up.

You’ll also have your name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

This level also includes 2 items of your choice from the first collection with free shipping.

Textured background with the heading "Timeline"

We’re anticipating having some items ready in early November, but depending on how many people pledge, it might take a little longer to fulfil all the orders. The Onyx leggings will be cut once the campaign is completed and pledges received so we know what size to make for you.

The goal is to have everything completed by mid December at the absolute latest.

Textured background with the heading "Our Team"

We always say Zeenya is built on movement, colour, and connection. And while we’re a small team of 2, we work with lots of other cool New Zealand businesses to help make our online company a success.

Business is never conducted in isolation, it’s always a team, even if the team isn’t in-house. We’re super excited to have the opportunity to work with Nisa to deliver our technicolour activewear dreams.

Behind this whole crowdfunding campaign is our Head of Colour, Chloe Wickman.

Head of Colour, Chloe Wickman

Zeenya was started after an eye-opening trip to Brazil. The love of colourful activewear and body positivity there is so different from New Zealand. Women of all shapes and sizes doing their thing and embracing life. We wanted to bring that same level of joy and confidence home.

Our philosophy? If you love it, wear it. If it feels good, do it.

Zeenya is a celebration of women and the incredible things they can do. We believe in a world where women’s bodies are celebrated for that; and not one where our worthiness relies on physical appearance. Movement looks like how you want it to, not what it is to someone else.

Updates on specific reward levels

21/11/2023 at 4:14 PM

Hey awesome humans!

We know you're super excited to receive your rewards so we thought we'd give you a big update on the various levels so you know what's happening.

Name our First NZ Sport Range: here's the link to suggest your idea! https://forms.gle/UKE3yGmsxz3qF7tw7

You'll need to pop an email address in to confirm it's you, please include your full name so we know who it came from. We'll choose a winner before we start releasing the prints to the wild!

Vote to bring back a Unicorn Print: we had an incredible response to this, so we've now emailed the team in Brazil to find out which options are still available and we'll confirm which one is coming back next week!

Your name on the Gazebo: This is going to take a while to design, so once we're all set up, we'll be emailing you to confirm your full name to include. You'll have to double check spelling, as we receive it is how it'll be printed!

Get ya head in the game: Ali has finished whipping up headbands and we'll be getting these on the courier to you this week! Keep ya eyes peeled for the courier.

Discounts: "She's a pretty big job. This is going to be a big one, we're aiming to have your vouchers emailed out to via Shopify late next week. They'll arrive in your inbox looking like a gift voucher for the value you've chosen.

First Dibs Splashback Singlet: Our new quick dry colours are just about to land in NZ, so once we've raced up to Auckland next week to check them, we'll have all your colour choices available. We have some vintage 'splashes' too so we'll email you a mix and match option. Once they're confirmed, it'll be straight to the cutters and into manufacturing.

First Dibs Leggings and Shorts: We're just in the process of finding a time with our Photographer to get images to you so you can select your favourites. All going well we'll have these late next week and start sending your choices as soon as we have the first items from Nisa. This is looking like early December now to start shipping them to you.

Onyx Leggings: Oh it wouldn't be a clothing company without first making samples in the wrong fabric 😆 we've nearly sorted these to ensure we have the fit perfect. As soon as we do we'll be in your inbox to grab the size you're after with any recommended fit notes. Crossing fingers you'll hear from us late next week. These might be arriving closer to Christmas as we're at the mercy of other people currently.

Don't ya love it when you have a perfectly mapped out timeline at the start of a campaign and then there's a few little delays? Oh and the impending rush of holiday pressure coming faster than any of us wants to admit 🫣

If you have any questions, please send me an email [email protected]

But today? We're celebrating. It's NZ Made Day and we're launching our Core Range collection tonight called Gravitate. It'll be available online from 7pm with 5% of all sales going straight to Women's Refuge and their Safe Nights project. We've been watching these three new prints sparkling on our shelves for a while now, but with this campaign we decided to delay the launch until now.

Thanks for all your continued support and kind messages! We really appreciate your patience as we work through getting all these rewards completed.

Yours in colour,

Chloe + Team Zeenya

We've done the extra hard thing!

04/11/2023 at 9:15 AM

Hey cool humans,

It's Saturday morning, the sun is shining here in Tauranga and I woke feeling incredibly grateful. This experience has been the biggest trust exercise! And I'm truly humbled by the 285 pledges we've received.

Yesterday we went to a friends home to see how a heat press and printer works, and to test the product on our clothing. I must say we are pretty delighted with the results! We're going to test the heck out of the brands and design the shape of the logo because yesterday we also reached our stretch goal of $32,000.

If you want to see behind the scenes of the heat press process - you can see our Instagram stories here

As we head into the weekend, I want to wish you all a chill and happy one. There's been so much going on in the world, and if you need a little reminder to take some time for yourself this is it.

We're setting up our crusty old gazebo (hopefully for the last time) tomorrow at the City to Surf event here in Tauranga. So if you're keen to come see samples of the NZ Sport Range or to check out some awesome specials, you'll find us on the grass outside the Surf Club on Mount Maunganui beach until 1pm. There's around 1600 runners and walkers taking part so you know it'll be a good vibe!

The campaign closes tomorrow night at 11pm, and next week we'll start getting in touch to get your rewards out to you. So many fun things coming your way!

Have a fab weekend

Chloe + Team Zeenya

It's happening! We're going to be 100% NZ Made!

30/10/2023 at 5:46 PM

On this Monday, of all the Monday's in the year, we reached our target. And this was my reaction

Honest. I sobbed. If you need proof, go watch our Instagram/Facebook stories - I recorded it for posterity 😆

To get to this point has been one heck of a ride. And not just for the few weeks we've been planning and implementing this crowdfunding goal. It's felt like the weight of the last 15 months has been lifted. It hasn't really sunk in yet that this has happened. So instead of trying to get my head around it, I'll show you how the rest of last week went.

Thursday we hit the wild and wet city of Wellington. Lucky for us we NAILED a carpark right close to Nisa HQ. I was pumped. It took us four huge bags and 2 trips to carry all the cut pieces upstairs to the workshop.

Meeting Pam and the team was so much fun. Being able to stand around, talk shop, dream up new ideas and get to know each other was just the BEST. Pam's experience in clothing and manufacturing is incredible. We are so stoked to have this come together with the Nisa crew.

On Friday, Pam took us to meet Olivia who will be the person sewing for us. You can read more about her personal story here. She's a real powerhouse of a woman originally from Myanmar. Her workshop is set up at her home in Lower Hutt, where she can work the hours she needs to around her family.

We enjoyed a cuppa and some morning tea together and Olivia talked us through the machine she uses to make the flat lock stitch. This machine is freaking awesome! If you haven't seen our post with the above image, go check it out, the second part is a video of the machine working. It's got a little vaccum on it which sucks up the cut edges of the fabric so it doesn't get caught up in the stitching. Super fancy!

It feels like with all your support and help, Zeenya is ready to level up.

So now that we're funded, what happens next?

We've thought long and hard about this, and decided we need to remove one more piece of textile waste from our production and that's the little black Z pip that's on the hem of our garments.

These little things are super fiddly for our team to add on and sometimes they can be scratchy.

So if we get over $32,000 we'll look to get a heat press and printer so we can move past using these pips in the future. It might look something like this... fancy huh!

We've still got 6 days to go, and anything can happen so watch this space!

If we go any higher, we'll be investing those funds into product development. We've got our eye on a long-sleeve UV protectant running top and a redesign of our sweatshirts ready for next autumn.

If any of you are around Tauranga this weekend, we're down at the finish line for the City to Surf event by the Mount Maunganui Surf Club. We'll be set up on the lawn so make sure you come say hello. We'd love to see you!

Yours in colour and gratitude,
Chloe + Team Zeenya

You need to pledge to see this update.

200 Pledgers - and we're off to meet the team!

24/10/2023 at 7:54 PM

And just like that, we've hit 200 pledgers and over 85% funded. We promised in our newsletter today that if we get over 200, we'll do a challenge set by one of you. The options for this challenge include Ali being piggy backed around in a public area, both of us galloping around making horse noises, or putting together a list of 200 things to do in your Zeenya's. If you want to vote, head to our Instagram and tap on our stories.

We've had more than 20 people pledge today which is incredible!

Right now, we're getting bags packed because tomorrow we head to Auckland to pick up all the cut pieces ready to sew them into our first NZ Made Sport Range collection.  We'll be back either tomorrow night or early on Thursday with some behind the scenes pics of the first part of this adventure (pledgers only of course).

Feeling so grateful to have you along for the ride cool humans! Our next target is 90% so get your brain going for challenge ideas! If you have any goodies, send us an email [email protected] or send us a DM on FB or Insta.

Thanks so much for your support, it's incredible! For any of you who want to start campaigning to bring back your favourite print, you'd best be roping your friends and family into it. We've got a chat going in ZAA where you can start putting in any of your faves you'd love to see come back.

So this is Ali and I, ready for a few days of excitement and a LOT of driving! Let the madness begin!

Yours in colour,

Chloe

Friday musing from our first week

20/10/2023 at 9:19 AM

Wowsers team! This week has been off the charts. I’m sitting here with a cuppa, contemplating Friday morning, and feeling all the feels.

This week has involved a trip to Auckland to check the fabrics; creating videos; being part of a judging panel for Young Enterprise Scheme in Tauranga (think Dragons Den for teenagers); and then last night doing a pitch for a digital event called ‘Fund Female Founders’ with PledgeMe and Ministry of Awesome

How has that all been in one week?! No wonder I'm hanging out for the incoming long weekend here in NZ.

At the event last night we were asked how we felt about crowdfunding and our experience with it. And one thing struck me. Doing this PledgeMe campaign has reminded me why I love Zeenya, and why Zeenya is here.

We had so many huge challenges last year and it has been tough, but this project has revived my energy for being in business. Many of us have struggled this year, so I am just so grateful to see the messages and pledges of support for this big change.

This community rocks, and Zeenya is so close to being what I always dreamed: a 100% New Zealand made activewear company that lives and breathes its values.

Next week we've got another mad road trip on our hands. First, Ali and I are driving to Auckland to pick up our first cut (i.e. all the pieces ready to assemble). Then, we’re driving them down to Wellington so we can meet the team from Nisa in person. We’re really looking forward to meeting Olivia, who will be making our range.

I’m planning to take you along for the ride too, so make sure you're following us on Instagram for extra behind the scenes peeks.

Incredibly, we’re 77% funded!! Please keep sharing our campaign, we’re so close to reaching the funding goal and officially becoming 100% New Zealand made.

You might be wondering what happens once we get our goal? Well, we have a few ideas of extra things we can do, and we’ll be asking for your ideas next week. What do you want to see from Zeenya?

Yours in colour,

Chloe + Team Zeenya

You need to pledge to see this update.

And we're off!

17/10/2023 at 7:35 AM

Holy smokes - this is a next level feeling. As of the end of our first day, we’ve hit 35% of our target. That's over $10,000!

There’s some bad kitchen dance partying going on, we can promise you that. No videos available yet, it’s too early in the campaign to share those moves 😆 Maybe we can convince Ali to get involved and we’ll send something before it ends.

Today is a huge day - we’re off to Auckland to check the fabrics that have arrived for the very first NZ Sport Range production. We’ll take some pics while we’re at the cutters to show you tomorrow. Because you’ve pledged so early, you’ll be the first to see these new prints and you can start dreaming about your options. We’ll do everything we can to get you your first choice.

Fun Fact: Our fabrics need to be ‘rested’ before they’re cut. I’d probably need to rest too if I’d taken the same trip from Brazil, through Puerto Rico, USA and then to New Zealand. Jokes aside, when the fabric is put onto the rolls when it’s printed, it can be stretched at uneven values. Our team in Auckland remove all the fabric from the rolls and lay it around until it shrinks back to its usual tension. This takes around 48 hours.

Thank you so much for helping us on our way!

Much love and technicolour hugs

Chloe + Team Zeenya

Textured background with the heading "The Dream"

Years ago we had the dream that if Zeenya got big enough, we’d be in the position to employ migrant and refugee women here in New Zealand.

So when the opportunity arose to work with Nisa in Wellington, it was a cosmic alignment moment *cue angelic voices singing*.

Nisa’s values align right alongside ours. We all deeply care about the people we work with, and want to leave a legacy of empowered women in New Zealand.

Pie graph with breakdown of costs

Textured background with the heading "We know you love us"

You’ll also have your name on the gazebo, and vote on both the collection name and unicorn print.

Nisa staff working in their studio
