One Year, One You, One Planet - 365 Actions For Positive Change

Project 2023-09-14 16:14:17 +1200

Help us make climate action easy for everyone.

"How wonderful it is that no one has to wait, but can start right now to improve the world!”  Anne Frank (from her short story, Give)*

We've spent the last 9 months researching, writing and talking to people to see what they need to jump into climate change action. And now the results are nearly here! Our new not-for-profit book, One Year, One You, One Planet – 365 Actions for Positive Change  blends psychology, art and science in the name of personal and planetary well-being, to help us make the all-important and immediate shift our planet needs.
We've chosen to go it alone instead of waiting for a publisher to pick this up – because dammit, we're getting old and the Earth is sick. We're done waiting for traditional lead times, and "your people to talk to our people - yada yada yada".
But that means we now urgently need your help to put a fire under this project (metaphorically, obvs – we're not talking burning books!) and pay good talent to fine-tune and launch it into homes everywhere. We're seeking your support to print and finalise the design, illustrations and independent editing/proofing, with a stretch goal that will include printing at one of Aotearoa's best-known printers.

The book was conceived by writer and environmentalist Susan Wills and international social and environmental change expert Rose Challies. It's nearing final draft stage, with the first month of illustrations ready to go. (We've recently formed a collab with award-winning UK illustrator Fay Troote, however we're also grateful to French illustrator Audrey Boiteaux who did a few of the initial illustrations for this campaign before Fay came on board – so you'll still see a few of Audrey's illustrations on this page, as they can't be changed after a pledge has been made.)

Please support us by pledging a reward!

May we suggest:
- pre-ordering your own copy of the book (look for (Audrey's) heron pic on the right-hand side)
- pre-ordering a digital copy of the book
- chipping in with a small feel-good donation
- or if you're a small business who wants to kick off your sustainability journey, you can also pledge to receive a small business Earth+ Business Review to help you identify the most impactful actions for your business going forward.

Your contribution will help fund a professional editor/peer reviewer, pay our illustrator a fair wage to do more illustrations, and a graphic designer to finish designing the print layout and print-ready file.

Contributions over our nominated goal will help to do a larger initial print run and marketing of the book, both nationally within Aotearoa NZ and globally. We're also building an online community to support readers with more in-depth information about the specific actions and issues they want to know more about, which they can refer to any time during the year, or afterwards.

LOOK – DESIGN MOCKUPS! NEW on 26 October.
For those of you who need to get a better idea of the quality of our work, we already have a few sneak peeks of the design coming along ... and our divine designer Delfi has allowed us to share these snapshots of her workings. (Even though she's definitely not happy with them yet!)

Yes, we know there are other ‘climate action books’ out there. And many, many websites. So what makes this book different?
We discovered that none of them make it personal and easy. Climate change is just too big an issue for most of us to consider tackling. (Like a giant hamburger too big for your mouth.) And you’ve got other stuff going on – family, finances, personal obligations. You’re tired; you're busy; it seems expensive and hard; you don't want to seem like a crazy greenie looney. We get it.
Yet you also know the climate crisis will see extreme weather events increase, food and energy become more expensive, and climate action becomes climate REaction. Cue climate anxiety, and a whole new cycle of stress.
The good news is that research shows you don't need to hook yourself up to an IV of sedatives to cope with this; instead, research shows you can help manage anxiety by engaging in meaningful action as part of a communityOur year of actions will help you easily and quickly understand impactful behaviours and build new climate-friendly micro-habits and climate fitness, one day at a time, in line with a global community of others

Every day suggests a new climate action that is either:
- mindful (helping you become better able to act consciously, in a way that's best for you and the earth)
- natural (helping you build healthy connections with the natural world to support your own mental and physical health)
- personal (actions you can do with your family, or around the home)
- habitual (small but powerful changes that will help you make bigger changes)

Your pledge now will help us help get more people doing their bit for the planet.

Please don't wait to join us as we embark upon this mission to live in harmony together upon a thriving Earth.
Ecology and economy are inextricably linked.

Any profits from this book will go to support the work of the environmental charity Terra Nova Foundation (Rose is the founder), and the native forest regeneration entity Torokiki Aotearoa Ltd (Susan is a founder).

Setback or comeback? You help choose! Last hours!

This book started with two sentences from an 11-year-old. At the close of a David Attenborough documentary, she said, “I don’t want to be alive in a future like this. Why is no one doing anything about it?”

The first sentence is one no parent wants to hear. But at least we have an answer for the second.

“We are. This.”

That same child is now 12, and upon hearing that our campaign was not yet fully funded yesterday, she offered everything in her money box to support us, “If it would help?”
Of course, she doesn’t have the $3,524 that we’re short at the time of writing and, even if she did, we wouldn’t take it. Because she’s not part of the problem. We are.

We know climate anxiety is on the rise, and we don’t yet know exactly how it will impact our young people. But we can be certain it will be significant.

We’re incredibly grateful for the named and anonymous pledges, shares and words of support from all of you that have propelled us to 72% of our goal, with just over $3500 to go. While this figure is by no means insurmountable, it is a bit...well, challenging. The remaining 28% requires 52 more book pledges to get us over the line between now and 4pm Friday. Or – it could be as simple as just ONE small-medium business to step up and start to craft a new legacy with a pledge for an in-house Terra Nova Earth+ Business review @ $3500 (alongside the awesome team at leading NZ architectural practice Crosson Architects, who have already pledged to Earth+ their business with one of these).
The options are wide open – so if you could share our campaign NOW with just one other close, like-minded friend, it could make all the difference.

But however things finish tomorrow at 4pm, we want to leave you with a few thoughts.
Book or no book (there will be a book – it just might take a little longer), if you want to help mitigate the climate crisis, start conversations. Contribute to other campaigns for potentially impactful products and services. Pause before you do (and buy) things, and consider if it’s right for you and the planet. Get outside. In nature. Get rain on your face.
If you’ve contributed to this campaign, there’s a good chance you already do all these things.
So do them more.

We hope to be in touch later with some good news, but even if we’re not, here’s to you xx

Have a brilliant weekend.

A Sneak Peek Inside the Book - 4 days to go

27/10/2023 at 12:02 AM

Our campaign has stalled, and we're feeling the pressure!
There have been many deep sighs, laboured emails close to midnight and possibly a little bit of Facebook stalking to see who else might chuck us a fiver. There may even have been tears and mournful wailing of Peter Gabriel's Don't Give Up.
Jokes aside (are they jokes? – you decide), things are getting pretty sombre now.

We're still only just over halfway to our goal, despite all the congratulations, enthusiasm and social media shares. There's a real chance this will fall over in the final straight, despite the many, many hours of research and writing. We get it - a lot of people are risk-averse (weirdly, the most risk-averse ones seem to be friends – while professional colleagues and clients have been most happy to support this project because they're familiar with the quality of our work!)

So we've done the only thing we could do under the circumstances. We've pushed on and lit a fire under our graphic designer (in the nicest possible way) and asked her to begin drafting some layouts. They're not quite perfect, but soon will be.  We'd love you to check them out and re-share our campaign to at least one person who you think will care.

We can get there if we find 86 more people to pledge for a copy of the printed book, or 60 people to pledge for the planting of 10 native trees.
Know anyone who could help?

With everlasting gratitude for your support so far,
Susan and Rose

Halfway to our goal!

22/10/2023 at 7:48 AM

Woo-hoo, pledgers and followers,

Thanks so much for your support so far!

We're thrilled to report that our campaign has reached its halfway point :)

Support has been steadily building over the last week, which now means we have enough pledges to pay our illustrator to complete all the illustrations for the book! *happy dance* But we won't get any of these pledges unless we reach our goal. We still have a few more tricks up our sleeve to boost this campaign to the next level, including some local media mentions, social media promotions, AND Rose and Susan will be talking on the Terra Nova Earth Talks podcast this week.
Will you help us by sharing this campaign with a few more people?

Reaching our goal will also allow us to pay an independent editor/proofer and graphic designer, and get a small sample print run (100 copies for our first pledgers and sample copies for bookshops), which will then kick-start our next print run.

Thanks again so very much for your support!
