Can you help me raise the funds needed to take up an opportunity of a life time?
To learn how raise funds from the person behind the Bernie Sanders fundraising campaign and others who are just as equally awesome doing what they do best?
I was earlier this month offered a place onto the Digital Fundraising Fellowship through the Centre for Australian Progress. I'll be joining a bunch of fundraisers from acorss New Zealand and Australia on an opportunity of a lifetime, learning from experts in this area including Michael Whitney, former Digital Fundraising Manager for the Bernie Sanders 2016 Presidential Campaign; Nicole Aro, Director of Digital Strategies at AFL-CIO and Rebecca Wilson, former Global Development Director at Change.org.
So here I am setting out on a digital fundraising journey, starting with a digital fundraising campaign to help me get there.
I’m very excited about connecting with like-minded people who are interested in creating opportunities for people to give. This is how I see fundraising. Helping connect people with the causes they love and helping those organisations grow. I'm a very traditional fundraiser! I am a big fan of tried and tested tools like direct mail (yes, post!), but online strategies ARE growing and I've seen them be effective, I just now want to learn how!
My goal is to raise $500. This will get me flights to Sydney and back in May. Anything after that will be a bonus and will help cover the full cost of the fellowship. I'm doing other bits and pieces to raise the money, but what I raise here will lessen the burden elsewhere.
The total amount needed is around $3240
Fellowship (approx) $1800 NZD
Flights and accomodation $1200 NZD
PledgeMe fees (approx) $240 NZD
Important information
All rewards must be booked in advance and work to be completed by December 10th 2017. First in First served for availability.
The Fellowship goes from March to May. I'll have limited availability during that time but for the Health checks and training stuff I have some availability in April on a first in, first served basis.

Do you remember the first email you ever wrote?

I don't! Or maybe I do? I remember setting up my first email account for MSN messenger purposes!
Anyway, there's two days left of my pledgeme campaign and if you've been following along you'll know that I spent a few days in Melbourne last week for the first retreat of the Fellowship. Oh boy, it was great!
There's just so much I've learned and can't wait to get cracking on implementing some new things. I've already submitted my first bit of homework which involves writing an email (oooh fancy). The cool thing is that it's an email that I'll hopefully get to send out for the agency I'm volunteering with, JustSpeak. Check out their work at www.justspeak.org.nz - sign up at the bottom of the page to be sure to get stuff straight to your inbox about what we're up to and how you can be involved too!
We've only had a couple of days of learning and it has just changed my perspective on all things fundraising. Where was this 5 years a go!?
The biggest key takeaway for me so far is really bringing into the organisation what can you and your supporters achieve together ... communicating that I've found is harder than you might think, often it's easy to get into the get age old 'if you give me x, I can do y,' but what if our language and how we approach our supporters was more inclusive?
Largely my approach to fundraising is about creating opportunities for people to give to the things they care about. The awesome thing about this and this particular campaign is that there are heaps of people who care about me (yay!). So no matter who you are, you're part of this journey and that truly means the world to me. So much has happened in the past week and I feel encouraged, inspired and most importantly, supported. Thank you.
More updates soon.

Hello Pledgers!
not quite on my way, but will be tomorrow morning at some ungodly hour for the first retreat of the fellowship. You did this for me! Thank you 😊
Im really looking forward to it and updating you all on how it's going. So much learning to be had.
Some important things:
1) the campaign closes soon ... next week I think? After that I'll be contacting you all to arrange delivery of your plants or coffees or fundraising advice stuff.
2) I've had an opportunity to apply for a grant to help with some of the other costs which is awesome! Fingers crossed for that.
3) packing tip: don't take your trainers with you for a 4 day trip. Reality is ... I won't use them. My suitcase feels empty but only got carry-on so that's all good.
if you're in Melbourne I'm out and about on Friday night. Keen for a catch up.
update you soon.

Woohoo! Thank you pledgers. We did it :)

Boom! I've reached my target of $500 ... what now?
So, I've booked my flights to Melbourne for the first retreat to kickstart the Digital Fundraising Fellowship with Centre for Australian Progress. Funds raised so far will cover flights to Sydney in May - this is going to make a huge difference to covering the full $3000+ cost to do the whole thing, two lots of travel, accomodation and the fellowship itself.
Another $600 raised will help me pay 1/3 of the costs of the Fellowship itself which will cost about $1800nzd. With 17 days left of the campaign, I'm sure I can rally a little more support to help cover the costs. Perhaps you could help?
There's still some Mumma plants left, so if you have a friend or family member who is a keen gardener share this campaign with them - getting this reward out the door will help cover pledgeme fees on the amount raised so far.
Some of the other rewards on offer are my services like a Fundraising Strategy or presentation to your Fundraising or Communications team. Or a review of one fundraising campaign or project.
Maybe you know someone in the NFP/Charity sector that could benefit from some of these?
These are services that I would normally offer as a freelance contractor, so I'm well practiced at giving practical and informative advice to charities. You can check out my LinkedIn profile for more info on that here https://www.linkedin.com/in/ta-ase-vaoga-2228824b/. If you're able to reach out to your networks I'd really appreciate the support.
Thank you so much for your generosity, I feel very priveledged and encouraged to have your backing for this.
You're truly all so awesome. Arohanui.

this is a walking update ... it's Friday and I'm on my way home and just feeling very grateful to the people backing me so far
Just $90 to go until I reach my goal! Mumma plants are popular so get in quick. If you're able to share with your networks that would be awesome and much appreciated.
ive some prep to do for the fellowship this weekend with less than two weeks until I go to Melbourne for the first retreat. Eeek!
Thank you for the support so far. Have a fab weekend xx
