ABOUT ALL WOMAN
Beatnik Publishing is seeking funding to help produce a publication of the brilliant All Woman photographic project by Bev Short.
Photographer Bev Short has travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand, photographing and interviewing 48 women from all walks of life: who range from a Carmelite nun to a sheep shearer to a politician to a nurse. Some of the women are famous, including the Topp twins, former Wellington mayor Kerry Prendergast, poet Dame Fiona Kidman and comedian Michele A’Court (did you spot any familiar faces in the video?). Famous or not, the accompanying interviews reveal that each women is fascinating, as are the stories that Bev has accumulated from her adventures.
All Woman explores the many facets of the modern NZ Woman. Bev Short's objective is to inform and create debate around what it is to be a ‘real’ woman; at the same time, her portraits stand on their own: powerful, dramatic, creative and stirring.
Beatnik believes the photographs, published with Short's stories and the subject's interviews, would create a fantastic, thought-provoking book that celebrates New Zealand women.
In a testament to Bev’s talent and this incredible body of work, the New Zealand Portrait Gallery in Wellington exhibited All Woman as Bev's premier solo show to 8000 visitors from April until July 2012. All Woman is now touring the country, kicking of at the Millenium Gallery in Blenheim, which opened on the 2nd of February. Updates of where the show can be seen will be posted in the updates section.
WHY A BOOK?
While exhibiting at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Bev received hundreds of letters of encouragement from people of a variety of backgrounds, ages and genders. The project has sparked conversations and news stories concerning issues ranging from domestic violence and gender discrimination to female identity and femininity. Beatnik wants to continue to fuel these conversations by documenting this amazing collection of work in book format. A book can take the All Woman project out of the context of the gallery and make it widely accessible to people across the country.
FEEDBACK AND REVIEWS
"As a celebration of Kiwi women and their abilities, All Woman portrays wide and often unrecognised contributions they make to our country and our world….I applaud the tenacity and dedication these woman show - they are all making a difference and can inspire each and every one of us."
- Excerpt from the All Woman foreword written by Helen Clark
"The feedback we are receiving is overwhelmingly positive. The level of work and detail in your exhibition is quite mind blowing. Thank you for sharing it with us here."
- Cressida Bishop, Director, Millennium Public Art Gallery, Marlborough
"[Bev Short's] 48 photographs form a panoramic journey, deliberately staged with wit and perception. In her investigation into what it is that defines the modern New Zealand woman she chronicles a determination to succeed, while grappling with issues of gender and racial prejudice. What unfold is a line-up of compelling heroines"
- Avenal McKinnon, director of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery
FUNDING
The funding received through Pledge Me will go towards the up front costs of producing a book including design, editing and production. The funds we are asking for are a percentage of the budget for a book of this kind (1000 copies, full colour, fairly sized) and Beatnik will be putting forward the addition funds and time needed to make this project a reality. Any additional funds received will go towards making the book even higher quality (paper, printing etc.) as well as the launch of the book.
If this is a project you would like to know more about do not hesitate to contact Beatnik.
