About

An Echo In Adelaide

Project 2013-01-29 00:59:01 +1300

Kia Ora! Im Jen McArthur, a physical theatre and comedy dance performer from Wellington, who wants to take a distinctly New Zealand voice out to the world! My passion is making people laugh and connecting with an audience in a meaningful way by telling stories through movement. My solo show "Echolalia" is about overcoming fears around social etiquette through the eyes of a woman with Asperger’s looking for a job. It won Best Solo Show at the Wellington Fringe last year and shared Best of the Fringe in Dunedin. The next step to getting out to the world is the Adelaide Fringe and I need your help to get there!

The subject (and subjects) of autism I came across first through teaching kids and then it became more relevant through discovering family connections. My character on stage deals with the plight of getting a job when social interactions are a nightmare and of the beautiful and mysterious pathways individuals can concoct to help themselves triumph over their fears. I have almost self funded this project (CNZ don’t award grants to attend Fringe Festivals) but still need funds for poster distribution, a smaller portable set and set freight to Adelaide and backpacker accommodation.

I am part of an international performance company called The Kallo Collective, who were drawn together through a common interest in physical theatre which incorporates physical comedy, clown, circus and dance. We draw from the masters Chaplin and Keaton and add a contemporary and NZ or Finnish twist. My crazy pathway to this point was through training at  the NZ School of Dance, VCA in Melbourne, Circomedia circus school in Bristol and by Lecoq clown teacher Giovanni Fusetti.
