Send Us To Sydney

Project 2013-01-25 01:01:08 +1300

With less than 10 days to go, we're making a final push for some extra funding to get us to the Sydney Olympic stage at the 2013 Latin Dance Festival. Every bit counts!

The Phoenix Belly Dance Group are award-winning performers made up of women of various different cultures and backgrounds, and their aim is to share the rich cultural experience and elegance of Middle Eastern dance. They have been invited to perform at events in New Zealand, South Africa, Malaysia, and Australia, ranging from SkyCity Breakers Games, Breakfast News TV show, Maori TV, and Arts Festivals and have won a Gold Medal at The New Zealand Performing Arts Championships. We also recently performed at Coca Cola Christmas in the Park- if you would like to see that performance, click here!!

Phoenix Belly Dance entered our professional performance group into a multi-discipline dance competition hosted by the annual Jambalaya Festival of Rhythm and Dance, where we competed against 14 major dance companies from all genres of dance including Hip Hop, Salsa, Contemporary, French Cancan, Samba, Jazz and Charleston! We were incredibly overwhelmed when they announced us as the winners of the competition. As part of the prize, we have been invited to perform as guests at the 2012 Australian Dance Festival and the 2013 Sydney Latin Dance Festival next February!

The competition drew an audience of over 400 people to Corban Estate Arts Centre in Waitakere, and many of the dance industry professionals as well as international guest stars were there as well. Our performance choreography was inspired by one of the songs used, Kotahitanga - meaning union - to share a message of unity through dance. The first part captured the volcanic fire and oceans which created and defined Aeotearoa, and moved on to unify elements of other dance styles including tribal fusion and bollywood where all 6 of our dancers moved as one unified body, and finally ended with a piece of modern music uniting us all with the universal language of laughter!

Due to availability and funding issues, we are only able to accept the invitation to the Sydney Latin Dance Festival. We now need the help of the community to help us to get to Sydney to fulfill our guest performance invitation in one of the largest Australian Dance Festivals! This is our last chance to get funding, so any help you can give would be vastly appreciated. Please check out the rewards we have on offer, and if you have suggestions for any more rewards, let us know and we'll see what we can do. Thank you so much for all your support!
