Magic In The Moana

“Come with me under the sea…”

Magic in the Moana is a puppet experience that takes audiences on a journey from the New Zealand beach to the depths of the ocean. It involves a collaboration of art forms including theatre, puppetry, video, music and dance. The Magic Play House has been creating educational puppet theatre experiences professionally since 2010 and toured New Zealand in 2011 with The Enchanted Forestreaching over 8000 children from Rawene in the Far North to Invercargill.

Our focus is about making magical, learning puppet experiences accessible to all New Zealanders at the highest quality possible.

2011 was amazing but expensive. This year it is time for a new challenge and a different approach. With the addition of video to the live performance of Magic in the Moana it is possible to push the boundaries of our imagination even further and make this magical underwater world come alive for all audiences, whether they be in our debut performance or at the local school production or in a touring show.

The Team

The creative team behind The Magic Play House is Kylie Penn (director, designer, producer and puppet maker) and Joanna Laird (writer, composer and singer). Two mums who are so passionate about their art that they have put all of their energy, time and limited funds into creating these special worlds of learning and inspiration.

It is amazing what can be created with very little financial input but sometimes; creative talent just can’t get you that last little step in completing a project.

So Far…

The score has been created by Joanna and partially recorded by Black Jade Music. The puppets, sets, costumes and props have been designed and partially constructed by Kylie. Students of The Magic Play House dance and puppet tech classes will contribute to the video

production and assist in the live theatrical performance.  We need some assistance in the final recording of the soundtrack and materials for the remaining puppets, props and set, and that is, hopefully, where you come in.

The Result

The debut of this project will be performed in Kerikeri at The Magic Play House in the school holidays at the end of Term One. Parts of the video production will also be made available as educational programs via our website for parents and teachers to access for free. We also hope to have the show available for schools to hire for their students performances.

This is a great way for anyone to come into contact with the creatures that inhabit our rocky shore, rocky reef and deep blue sea and be inspired to learn more about them and their environment. In a very simple but effective way it will open the audiences eyes to the magic in our moana. It will also help to highlight how precious this environment is and what we can do to preserve it for future generations.
