Thank you to all our pledgers and supporters. With the PCE announcing a full investigation into fracking in New Zealand we have decided not to make the film. While we have done much research we feel it is an uphill battle to fund the film to the level that would make it viable (and brilliant). Your pledges have not been processed.

We are going to use the trailer we made as part of a submission to the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment

And we’d like you to get involved.

We are asking everyone who pledged or who has a burning question to provide a few sentences to be sent as part of our submission.

The New Zealand government has issued exploration licenses to Tag Oil and its partner Apache. Using hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, they intend to extract oil and gas from the area around Whatatutu, a tight-knit East Coast town of 300 residents. The town is surrounded by traditional family farms, forestry and reserves of fuel-rich subterranean rock so vast Tag Oil says the area is “literally leaking oil and gas”.


Mining advocates claim fracking - which involves injecting millions of litres of highly pressurised water, sand and chemicals into the earth - is safe; opponents insist it leaves a toxic legacy.

Fracking Whatatutu is being made by professional, award-winning filmmakers concerned about the lack of informed discussion about the issue in New Zealand. The documentary will examine the national and global implications of fracking via the microcosm of Whatatutu’s experience, challenging the claims of environmentalists and oil companies alike.
