About

Songpa-Gu Korean Garden And Traditional Korean Pavilion Project

Project 2021-11-22 18:17:02 +1300

The current Songpa-gu Sister City Committee is headed by Chairperson Mr Adam Curtin, joined by Deputy Chair Mr Simon Oe. There are currently 12 official committee members, with Mr Curtin and Mr Oe elected to their positions in November 2020. Chairperson Curtin and Deputy Chair Oe have been actively involved in the direction of the committee's main focus, for the promotion of the Sister City relationship locally in Christchurch. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, various events have been held at the Songpa-gu Korean Garden, for the local Christchurch community and Christchurch Korean community to come together and enjoy.

The committee believe this proposed pavilion structure to be of great significance, as it honours the Canterbury Korean War Veterans that have made sacrifices for the freedom of South Koreans. These efforts are still valued to this day, and remains a key element to the relationship between New Zealand and the Republic of Korea. Due to the veteran’s age, time is of the essence.

For this reason, the Christchurch Songpa-gu Sister City Committee endeavours to install the pavilion as soon as practicably possible, to ensure the veterans can witness the monument that commemorates their efforts, and share the memory with family and friends. This pavilion structure will be able to be enjoyed and utilised by any member of the local Christchurch community that visits the Songpa-gu Korean Garden, in addition to representing a great symbolic significance for the Christchurch Korean community and honoured Canterbury Korean War Veterans and their families.

All funds raised will go towards installation of the Traditional Korean Pavilion structure, which will be erected in the Songpa-gu Korean Garden (Sister City Garden), found in the Halswell Quarry Park of Christchurch, New Zealand.

Your investment and funding to this project will not only commemorate and honour the Canterbury Korean War Veterans, but will also serve as an invaluable symbol of friendship that will further strengthen the relationship between Christchurch City and Songpa-gu, and also  New Zealand and South Korea.
