Unmask Palm Oil is a New Zealand campaign for mandatory palm oil labelling. Currently palm oil can be labelled as one of 200 different scientific names or as the generic term vegetable oil. This makes it nearly impossible for consumers to make the ethical decision to not buy palm oil, the ingredient responsible for millions of hectares of deforestation, billions of tonnes of carbon emissions, the near extinction of species like the orangutan and indigenous human rights abuses.
We are lobbying the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Craig Foss (formerly Simon Bridges) to introduce regulation that makes it mandatory for companies to label palm oil as palm oil. Unmask Palm Oil is a youth led and entirely volunteer run campaign.
Our campaign is growing and we need funding to expand. We have already won the support of New Zealand First and the Green Party and hope to have Labours support soon. This year we are launching our petition that aims to get 10,000 signatures before it is presented to parliament in August, we are running workshops around the country, meeting with politicians and organisations and producing more videos and graphics.
All these goals require funding and we need your help to reach our target of $1700. We have a huge impact with so few resources. Thank you in advance!
