About

The Lucy Foundation: They Didn't Know We Were Seeds - The Growth Phase

Project 2021-08-04 00:32:14 +1200

Who are we?

The Lucy Foundation (TLF) is a New Zealand-based social enterprise that provides meaningful employment to disabled people through trade. Through our first project we have created the first disability-inclusive coffee supply chain in the world.

What do we do?

Our team, made up of disabled and non-disabled people, works with the community in Pluma Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Mexico to cultivate, harvest, and process the unique Arabica varietal, Pluma, and send the green beans to Aotearoa New Zealand. The beans are then roasted, packaged and delivered to our customers by our team in Kirikiriroa, Hamilton. We need $10,000 to continue providing employment opportunities to our team in Mexico and produce coffee. The Lucy Foundation has a reputation for working with this remote, coffee-farming village to produce specialty coffee for export to New Zealand with inclusivity, sustainability and kindness at the core of what we do.

What do we hope to achieve?

Our aim for the next financial year is to increase Pluma coffee production and export from Pluma Hidalgo, Mexico to New Zealand from 720kg to 1,000kg per year

How will we use the funding?

- Monthly agricultural workshops

- Monthly women's agricultural workshops

- Weekly disability workshops

- Employ two more disabled people in the local coffee industry

- Cover the costs of increased hours for processing the coffee

And if that's not enough to convince you, here are some photos of our amazing global team of TLF volunteers, crew, and business partners, working together to help us grow the world's first disability-inclusive sustainable coffee initiative.

Thank you so much for supporting us to grow and build the world's first-ever disability inclusive coffee supply chain.

We're looking forward to bringing you all new Pluma coffee very soon (in fact the next shipment has just arrived) and building on our work in Pluma Hidalgo, Mexico.

Last night, you will have all received an email from PledgeMe. Let us know if you have any issues and we'll follow it up with the PledgeMe team. If you're not already signed up to our newsletter, sign up at thelucyfoundation.com and we'll keep you updated on how your donation is being used.

Wow, we made it! Thank you for your support!

Wow! Thanks to 38 generous pledgers, we have raised almost $10,000!

What do these numbers mean?

While our target has always been $10,000, we deliberately set our lower threshold at $7,000. This is the lowest amount of money needed to be able to claim all the generous pledges at the end of the campaign. If we didn’t reach the threshold, we would have received $0.

So, you can imagine how excited we were to surpass the threshold and take a leap towards the $10,000 mark!

But it doesn’t end here. Every dollar pledged over our target of $10,000 will also go directly towards delivering even MORE inclusive programs in Mexico and supporting more disabled people into employment in the coffee industry. Instead of 6-months worth of Track One and Two workshops for example, we can do seven months, or even eight. We can process more coffee. You get the picture!

We are so grateful for all the support, especially during such uncertain times. I think we can all agree that no matter what, coffee brings people together. After all… the best coffee of all is coffee for all!

With lots of care and caffeine, the TLF Crew

We're halfway there!
