Who We Are:

We are Berkano Foods. NZs first 100% vegan owned and operated food/meal manufacturer here in New Zealand. Founded in 2017 by Britteny Bryan and Nick Harlow with a simple mission of making plant-based food more convenient, accessible and affordable here in our wonderful country! We are based out of Christchurch and distriubute our products New Zealand wide. 

We Need Your Help!:

As some of you may know, we had a vegan cafe in Christchurch. We had great joy in serving everyone over the years. Earlier this year we decided we needed to focus all of our energy and time on our manufacturing business. After working 7 days a week for over 3 years, it was time to focus. We decided that our best option was to sell our cafe.

After having a few offers and the excitement of another couple wanting to carry on the cafe legacy, we hit a large roadblock. We needed final consent from our landlord which turned around at the last minute and refused to sign on any new tenants who wished to purchase our cafe (once our current lease was up). This left us in a very hard spot after already spending a lot of time and money trying to sell and finalize the purchase. After the landlord refused to negotiate, and without giving a good reason why, we were forced to close the cafe, sell the assets/equipment and move on (with great financial loss). This was a very stressful and sad time for not only us but the other couple who were going to take over our cafe. We also felt we had let the public down by being forced to close a favourite plant-based eatery here in Christchurch.

Moving forward. After being refused to renew our lease by our landlord we’re forced to move our facility, which we also manufacture our ready-meal products out of.

We have launched this pledge me campaign to not only help us move into our new factory, but to help secure and expand our range of plant based products for all to enjoy.

Road Map:

We’re currently in nearly 200 retail stores across NZ with our gourmet retail range, we have also just launched 3 of our most popular vegan fitness meals into retail and are building stockists for the new range. We’re also working on expanding our online service with products like a range of value meals that will only cost $7 per meal!

This year we hope to accomplish the following:

Move into our new factory. Expand our current range of products into more retail stores (we’re yet to crack Countdown).

Improve our website service (More products and better consistency in our stock levels).

Bring a distribution method to the North Island so our customers can get cheaper freight.

Buy better equipment in order to produce more quantity, which means we can work to get the price of our products down in order to make them more affordable.

Launch a range of our multi-serving meals into retail.

Launch a desserts range online and into retail. (We're talking cheesecakes etc)

Launch a cooking sauce range online and into retail. (We’re talking cheesy pasta sauces and curry sauces in glass jars etc).

Launch other products into retail like our frozen pizza range.

Launch an alternative meat range! Yes that’s right, this is our ultimate goal for this year! Let's just say we want to make products that aren’t here in NZ yet.

Become a B-corp, we want to give back to our community, Animals and environment.

Start Exporting to Australia. (This would be a bonus goal!)

Achieving our Goal:

Our goal is to become one of NZ's leading plant based food manufacturers. 100% owned and operated by vegans for vegans. We want to push the price of products down to help stop the price gouging that has been happening by non vegan brands selling vegan products. Which ultimately stops people wanting to try and eat vegan.
