Kia ora !

We are CoLiberate - a Wellington based social enterprise who are raising funds to help accelerate the launch of The Well - our mental health and wellbeing gym in the middle of Wellington City!!

After 5 years running various iterations of a Mental Health gym throughout Wellington City, we are raising funds to launch  our permanent service! Our vision is to create a gym culture for mental health which is just as valued as physical health and fitness culture.  We have teamed up with two/fiftyseven on Willis St and secured a long term lease on a sweet as spot above Unity books. We’ve hired a strong, connective, and empathetic team to run the service.. We’re now pulling together the final  threads towards our launch date…and this is where you come in. We have validated the need for this service and rallied around a crowd eager for this to launch big, and succeed...

… and currently, money is our biggest set back to launching asap. We  know if we can raise these funds, we can pull together the final parts and open much sooner than planned - setting up The Well to live a sustainable, long life  of epic impact!

It doesn’t stop here… we have big plans to  expand our vision for the future! We don’t want to only run in Wellington, as we know this innovative solution and proactive wellbeing service is needed all throughout the country. We want to bring The Well to towns and communities all throughout Aotearoa.  Let’s start here first! With your help, we can achieve this.

Just like it's the little convos that can make the biggest difference… so can your donation and support.

Read on for the longer story and to hear more about why we believe The Well - the equivalent of a gym but for mental health and wellbeing - is one of the solutions towards a happier, healthier, and more well New Zealand.

What is The Well?

At The Well, we value mental health as much as physical health. This space is dedicated to helping people connect with their mind, body, and soul with their everyday experiences.

Sharing experiences, reflecting and expressing emotions, exploring different ways to share how we are in this world - where do you ever get the space to really give yourself permission to do this?

We know that your wellbeing cup can easily run dry without proper care. In the same way that a well nourishes a village, The Well is a place to fill back up. Being able to develop sustainable wellbeing strategies in a fun, caring and intentional way means you can take leaps, ask for that promotion, run that marathon... live your best life knowing that support is... well, right here!

We will also run one-off retreat-style events on the weekends that align with the weekly timetable.

Who is it for?

This is for anyone and everyone. If you are motivated to proactively engage with your mental wellbeing in a place where it is accepted, normal -  even cool to do so, that The Well is the place for you. You can bring your mates. You can bring your mum. In the past, we've had grandparents, social workers, office workers, joe blogs, boyfriends, people with lived experience, people who are just realising that mental health is the current conversation, public servants, students... people with all sorts of valid reasons to connect with themselves and each other.  No matter what your experience is, or where you identify on the continuum of mental health, you are welcome to participate and engage in the way you want.

Membership is designed to help you make your wellbeing a weekly practice and habit.

Booking casual one-off sessions is also welcome.

Each session is specifically designed and invites you to:

The detailed Story / The Opportunity

Mental Health and Wellbeing solutions are high on  the public agenda. COVID-19 has meant record numbers of people are requesting access to mental health providers. Professional and social services are so pressured responding to the imminent need that innovating and creating a solution feels impossible. There are a number of government-sponsored awareness campaigns running at present asking people, “Are you okay?,” and affirming, “It’s alright to be a bit wobbly.” The Wellbeing Budget and election of 2020  promise  mental health  campaigns to help bring openness about mental health into mainstream consciousness, yet there is still a long wait for affordable mental and wellbeing options. These services are not necessarily available to those who need it, or  who may need it in the future.

The Well is perfectly placed to be part of the solution.

The Well is an accessible, affordable space where people can feel ease and connection while participating in a range of activities tailored to their wellbeing needs. It sits in addition to professional services. A place where you can build up a weekly habit of engaging in your personal wellbeing, develop tools and coping strategies, and connect with others who are on the journey too.

The best part is - we’ve tested it. We’ve seen the impact. We have the evidence to know that The Well is going to thrive. We’ve spent five years strategising, doing, reflecting, on repeat!! We have connected with people with lived experience to understand the shortfalls of support in their journeys. We have connected with people who have no relationship to their mental health but have very high pressure jobs. We have connected with people who just want somewhere to go to increase their emotional and mental health literacy so they can communicate their needs and wants better. No matter where you are at with your wellbeing,  The Well is an open, accessible, and affordable space where you can build a weekly habit of connecting with yourself and others.

Why a gym culture for mental health?

Five years ago, the CoLiberate founders (Sarah Tuck, Jody Burrell, Bop Murdoch) had the vision to create  the equivalent of ‘a gym culture for mental health’ where it was normal - even cool - to work on your mental health in the same way it’s acceptable to go for a run  during your lunch hour. Five years later, we are right on the cusp of launching this service to reinforce our strong hunch that creating a better culture of mental health support and engagement will reduce the pressure on professional services to be THE ONLY ANSWER, and give people hope that change and support will be easier to access.

Even though I don’t personally go to the gym, I benefit significantly from fitness culture. The gym and ‘gym culture’ has an amazing way of normalising fitness and body care as an everyday practice. The Well is just the start of the cultural uplift we need to ensure that mental health is just as valued. We’re putting mental health where it belongs on the infrastructural map.

In our culture, our places for social connection, relaxation, and reflection are predominantly bars, exclusive sports or arts groups, and our workplaces. We believe that if people have fun, effective, and enjoyable opportunities to relax, reflect, uplift and connect, and express through the body, they will be more able to manage their own wellbeing over time. We will see better mental health outcomes not just for the people attending but for everyone.

Goals, Goals, Goals.

Our Goals / WHERE your pledge will go.

First tier Goal: $60,000  - our minimum goal. This will go towards start up costs, equipment, space design, material and some extra and crucial training for our facilitation staff. This is the boost we need to open. If we reach this target, we can open and launch this service on the 24th of June!!! This will mean The Well can support Wellingtonians through the Winter of 2021

Second Tier Goal: $115,000 - our ideal goal. This will cover our first-tier goal AND give us a boost for the first season of sessions so we can focus energy on making sure the service is attended and thriving! This would enable us to bring in a Personal Wellbeing Coach service sooner - and provide subsidised memberships to some of Wellington’s most vulnerable people

Ultimate tier Goal: $185,000 - our ‘we’ll get here eventually’ goal. This will cover second tier goal AND allow us to travel around Aotearoa researching how we can set up versions of The Well in high-needs regions. The Well would look completely different in Wellington City to say that of Porirua or Masterton- we need to take the time to investigate and validate a service like this one  in other parts of the country! We are excited to do this eventually - We’ve got BIG growth goals. This will help us get here sooner.

It's all coming together!! 50% and beyond !!

08/06/2021 at 1:52 PM

Kia ora koutou !!

We are thrilled to be on the other side of  50% !! We are so grateful to have such an amazing network behind us, helping us to #fillupthewell. Thank you to every single one of you who have donated and shared on social media. Every bit counts!

We’ve had some amazing progress happen here on the ground...

Amber Strain, our spacial designer has been working super hard assembling items and bringing our vibe dreams to life! Given The Well operates on a timetable, with 10 sessions every single week - it was a design challenge of creating an easeful way to transform the space with a half an hour turn around. We are so pleased with how it’s looking and can’t wait to fill up the well with the necessary cushion, yoga mats, bolsters, tea and more to create a relaxing, vibing space!

We’ve managed to have our first few handmade cushions from the phenomenal Nicky McCreanor. They are so comfortable and bringing a splash of Well colour to the place. We’ve got a few more coming from Laura Gillot too - super exciting having so many hands on deck!

Ash holwell has been working away at the brand and creating a ~ look ~ for The Well. We’ve always known that if we are going to make mental health ‘cool’ and normal then it has to look cool and normal. I handed Ash a not-so-brief design brief and I am super excited where he has landed… Thanks Ash! And thanks to those of you giving feedback along the process! Here is the final logo. You can see more on the website here - and follow us on socials to see.

Bop and Rosie have been supporting the new Well crew to bring their session plans to life! We’ve been channelling our days of making theatre and having ‘dress rehearsals’ to have a practice experience of what the real thing will be like. I must say... you're in for a treat!!!

(#1 dress rehearsal. What the landing area will look like! You can have a cuppa tea and land before heading through the curtains into the sessions)

(^^ Dress rehearsal viiibes featuring Big leafy boi and some soft lighting)

Do you remember our colouring mats from the past studios? We have pulled these back out!! Stoked to have Ashley Brown back on board to refresh the design for these colouring mats :)

Once again, thank you so much for your support. Every donation towards our 60,000 goal has been super meaningful.

    Ngā manaakitanga!

"This is such a great idea. I listened to the RNZ interview - art galeries and libraries are ok but some of us need movement to relax, and having people to connect with. Your plan totally resonated with me.."
