Project Holey Drive – a new driveway for Ngatiawa River Monastery
Ngatiawa is upgrading the driveway. It'll cost a whopping $134,850, so even though we've hit the $20K goal, please still pledge (or donate)! If for some reason you'd rather donate directly to Ngatiawa, here are the details:
Ngatiawa Retreat Trust

Include 'drive' as a reference.
We are a registered charity, so if you want a reciept for your pledge or your direct donation email [email protected]
"Let's take the 'e' out of the holey driveway".
Ngatiawa River Monastery was born in the 1950's, as a Presbyterian youth 'Ngatiawa Camp', and had its rebirth 18 years ago when Justin and Jenny Duckworth bought the place with Tarsha Te Rure and started doing it up. It's a contemporary monastery that started on a prayer, and continues to run on koha, generosity, and miracles – literally! We are the 'motherhouse' of Urban Vision, a mission order in covenant with the Anglican Church.
Who / what is Ngatiawa?
We are a community of prayer and hospitality, that makes supportive accommodation / retreat space available (both short and longterm) for those who wish to connect deeply with God and intentional community. We have a particular calling to people who wouldn't normally access this due to a lack of resource. We also host many community, youth and church groups, particularly in the weekends. We would love to keep showing hospitality at Ngatiawa.
However, our driveway has got to the point where you practically need a tractor to make it down! Even after many attempts at removing some of the worst potholes, it’s never anything that stands the test of time. So after 70 years, we hope to fix it once and for all. And so we turn to our friends! Our vision is that via crowdsourcing, we will get the word out even wider, to help pull in the funds so we can continue to welcome guests for the next 70 years.
Ngatiawa is owned by 'Ngatiawa Retreat Trust' – a registered charity – so please email us at [email protected] , if you want a tax-deductible receipt for your donation.
Pledging from overseas is easy using a credit card. If you'd rather do it with a bank transfer or with another method the friendly team at Pledgeme will help you out: [email protected] .
Stage 1 of the project is to concrete ‘The slope.’ The estimate for this is $65,550. This section has become so bad that we're asking people to park above it and walk down. We're aiming for this to be completed by the end of 2021.
Stage 2 is to chip seal the rest of the driveway. The quote we’ve received for this is $69,300. We're aiming to have this work completed by the end of 2023.
We need your help! Our crowdfund goal is $20,000.
It’s just a portion of what we need to complete the project, but we have to start somewhere. All of the money we receive will go direct to the driveway job, minus the $1300 PledgeMe fee.
We are also doing grant applications to a number of trusts, however there aren't many that help with infrastructure maintenance costs. So please support us!
This can come in the form of
- Money! Pledge and choose your prize on the right →
- Sharing this page on Facebook
- Telling your friends & family
- Emailing us if you know of a philanthropist or millionaire who loves Ngatiawa and wants to help!
- Prayer – because we believe in a God that cares about even these kinds of details
If you have any questions about the project, please email [email protected] or you can view more detailed information about the project and Ngatiawa Retreat Trust here.
Thanks friends! We are so grateful for this opportunity to witness another Ngatiawa Miracle story xx

Reminder re Tax Credits, Project Update, and Another giving opportunity
28/04/2023 at 11:56 AM
Kia ora/ Hello friends!
1. Tax Credit
For anyone that missed out last year, you can still submit an IR526 in NZ and get a tax credit. Please email me if you want a receipts for this: [email protected].
2. Project Update
For those who haven't visited Ngatiawa, we now have a fantastic chip sealed driveway that holds up well in the storms for the first section. We're now just looking into solutions for the final part. Thanks again so much for your support!
3. Another opportunity to give
Many of you will know Ray who lives at Ngatiawa. As he gets older it's becoming untenable for him to walk outside to the toilet block. We're aiming to get him setup with his own bathroom so we've launched a fundraising campaign. If you're interested in project, click here for more info:

Kia ora friends,
It's that time of the year when we start issuing receipts for donations so that people can get a 1/3 back with an IR526 tax credit claim form. (Ngatiawa Retreat Trust is a donee organiation with IRD).
We have already sent receipts out to some donors. If you would like a receipt for your driveway donation and you haven't already recieved one please get in touch: [email protected]
Just a quick update on the project. To support positive neighbourly relations, we have switched the order in which things will be done. The length of driveway that we share with our neighbours is now the top priority. We have accepted a contract for this work, and it should be completed in the second half of this year. Thanks so much. This is only possible because of you!
If you want to donate towards the second part of the project, you can do this at any time:

Rewards
08/05/2021 at 2:26 PM
Kia ora,
Once again, thanks so much!
Just a couple of things regarding the rewards for this campaign:
Pizza Party
There are two possible times we could do this.
1. Towards the end of this year we will re-concrete the steep section. We could have a party after this.
2. Realistically the project in it's entirety won't be complete until the end of 2022 at the earliest (probably 2023). We could celebrate when the whole thing is done:
Everyone is of course invited to the pizza party whenever we get round to having it. If you have a preference regarding sooner or later, please get in touch: [email protected]
The current default position is that we'll celebrate when the whole thing is done!
Books
Gem and I are away from Ngatiawa until the end of August. I'm planning on sending out books to people when we return, as I don't have the books with me here (we're on sabbatical). If you'd like your books before then, please let me know (with the email above). I'll sort something out!
Ngā mihi nui e te whānau, we are so grateful!
Stu

Thanks!

Kia ora,
Wow! We hit the 20K target way ahead of schedule! Thank you so much!!!
As exciting as it is to reach the target, the overall cost for us to properly fix the driveway is approximately $134,850. So please, if you haven't already, give our Pledgeme page a plug through your Facebook etc. (see the link below). The page is live for 5 more days.
And if you have any cool fundraising ideas for us, or know of any trusts we could apply to please email [email protected]
Once again, ngā mihi nui, thanks so much!

Kia ora e te whānau,
Woohoo! We are 2 weeks through our 4 week campaign and we've hit the 10K mark! Perfect!
Thank you so much for pledging!! =)
Please share this page with your networks! Here's the link to share:
If we don't hit the 20K mark, then no pledgers are obliged to follow through with their pledges. If we can get the word out to all those people who know and love Ngatiawa, I'm confident we'll hit our goal. This will be a huge step towards fixing our drive.
