Kia ora! My name is Jared and I am excited to show you this epic looking interactive app.
Our goal is to give IMAGENZSL, an interactive New Zealand Sign Language, to every school, every classroom and out in the community. It will be awesome.
NZSL is New Zealand’s second official language, there are not many resources that exist and this will provide a valuable tool and an alternative way for learning NZSL. Language apps are very popular in app stores worldwide – and are said to be revolutionising language learning. These apps offer opportunities to practise grammar and can be a very rewarding way to learn vocabulary.
IMAGENZSL is a sign language and language app where the user will learn NZSL by exploring the objects around them. This innovative project will be accessible to the public in a fun and interactive video format for everyone.
The IMAGENZSL App concept uses object recognition software. This technology uses a device (tablet or smartphones) camera to try and identify an object in its line of sight. Once the technology detects an object it believes it can recognise, then it will assign the name to it.
IMAGENZSL will use that object name assignment to play the NZ Sign Language video gesture for that object. This will allow users and learners to see how it is signed.
QUIZ MODE:
QUIZ mode allows users and learners to see how it is signed and tthe user can record themselves copying that sign. Not only that, this App will have te reo Māori so the user can learn NZ's two official languages. We have created a protoype with thanks from the NZSL Board and we have shown this to Deaf/Māori and the hearing community around NZ.
People can learn language in their own time, especially people busy in their day to day activities. Deaf people are also customers so the app will help them with communication. This will help reduce the stigma towards NZ Sign Language (NZSL).
We believe that languages are the gateway to our tamariki future and we are excited to be a part of it.
The journey so far:
With many thanks to the NZSL Boards Community Fund, that funded the prototype.
Now that we have completed the prototype and it is working well. We received great positive feedback from the Deaf community, students, teachers and the wider community. We would like to publicly launch the app omn the app stores as a free download.
Your help and Koha will go towards this as well as improving the look of the app.
To do this, we need your support.
