Our Place: Stories Of Local Life
Project 2020-11-07 13:13:27 +1300
Our Place: Stores of Local Life is a 110-page collection of photographs and stories from the local community of Devonport from April to November 2020. No-one has escaped the impact of the past few months, but if there's one thing that 2020 has taught us, it's how much we love and value our local communities and how much we don't want to lose them. Inspired by the Front Porch Project and Humans of New York, Local Life NZ is a reaffirmation of all that we love about local life, and the love that's been shown by our local communities. Edited and produced by Lauren Lulu Taylor and Kate Dobbin and printed locally on the North Shore, all proceeds from this campaign (above our production costs) will go to the Well Foundation.
Local Life NZ has charted its own course through the highs and lows of this unprecedented year; we’ve let the stories lead us serendipitously from one subject to another, giving us a glimpse into everyday lives, from euphoria to anguish, from innovation to re-invention. It’s been tough, there’s no doubt about that, but people haven’t wallowed in self-pity. Instead, they’ve told us time and again how important community has been to them, and how they couldn’t have got through it without each other. The book pays homage to our community; friends, families, businesses, and most importantly, our essential workers.
About the Well Foundation:
The funds raised from the proceeds of our book will support the work of the Well Foundation, the official charity of Waitematā DHB, whose mission is to advance healthcare for the people of North Shore, Rodney and Waitākere.
One of the services available through the DHB is He Puna Wāiora - "a pool of wellness" - a 35-bed adult acute mental health facility on Shakespeare Road, next to North Shore Hospital. It’s been designed using modern principles and clinical best practice, with dedicated therapeutic spaces, sensory and comfort rooms with multiple lounges, relaxation and programme spaces for service users.
The Unit is staffed by a team of 100 mental health workers, and the proceeds from our book will go specifically towards the wellbeing of this dedicated team of essential workers.
