About

Just Cause And Effect - Selenium Deficiency In New Zealand

Project 2020-11-02 12:07:58 +1300

Just Cause and Effect is the story of Selenium Deficiency in New Zealand. More than 20 years in the making, it is a collaboration between a retired Southland farmer, Les Hailes, and a career journalist, me.

From the get-go, this project has been about sharing information. It's a book rather than a paper because it's a story that needed to break free of academia and find its way into the real world.

Just Cause and Effect is the story of how the Green Revolution made New Zealand one of the sickest countries on earth.

Just Cause and Effect is also the story of why mammals did not inherit our particular part of the earth.

About science for non-scientists it combines appropriately peer reviewed studies from New Zealand and around the world on geography, biogeography, agriculture, horticulture, cot death, asthma, cancer, heart disease and more to discover it's not rocket science after all, it's all just cause and effect.

Les always said this was not a book about him. I argued his observations over 60 years were critical. We were agreeing to disagree when he underlined his position in black marker and died after a short illness days after advance copies arrived. Statiscally correct to the end, Les died of bowel cancer, the disease for which Southland holds the dubious per capital position of world leader.

To me, he said, simply, carry on.

We printed 2000 copies for a New Zealand market. Why 2000 copies? Because that's a best seller in New Zealand. We're looking to break traditional publishing models and and sell through multiple channels, consecutively. Once the Pledge ME campaign Just Cause and Effect will be retailing at $40 RRP+postage and handly directly through our website and in all the usual places where books are sold.

The book is better than the video but watch it anyway
