will give us a good shot at overturning a High Court Decision that:
Allows Cloud Ocean Water and Rapaki Natural Resources Limited to use over 8 billion litres of water per year for bottled water export.
Has implications for the way water is allocated across New Zealand, making it a simple exercise to change the use of existing water permits without being able to alter the conditions of the water 'take'.
Effectively increases the rights of water permit holders and supports a market for water via land sales.
Suggests that when granting consents for water bottling, the effects of plastic bottles on the environment can not be considered
Did not adequately consider the concerns of local iwi
A second legal opinion has confirmed we have a "winnable" case.
Aotearoa Water Action...
AWA was 'born' in 2018 to take on Canterbury Regional Council (ECan) and challenge the water bottling consents granted to Cloud Ocean Water and Rapaki Natural Resources Limited.
Since then we have helped Sustainable Otakiri take on bottling company Cresswell NZ;
we have delivered to ECan a 114,000-strong petition against the Cloud Ocean consents;
And thanks in large part to our team it is now LGNZ's policy to advocate for a moratorium on new applications to bottle water.
AWA has some funds available but not enough. We've estimated we need to raise least $50,000; ideally twice that.
N.B. Our team is 100% happily unpaid, so every cent goes towards legal costs.
Finally, if we win (and we think we can), any money left unspent will be set aside for other community legal cases that aim to protect our wai.
AWA's co-convenors are:
Queenstown Lakes District Councillor Niki Gladding &

Christchurch lawyer Peter Richardson (N.B. Peter is not paid for his services as instructing solicitor)

Cloud Ocean Water in Growth Mode
Water Bottling hiatus Urged as Cloud Ocean touts growth
NZ Councils pass remit to advocate for a moratorium on new water bottling consents
Huge thanks to all who have supported us with your skills & donations & good wishes over the last 3 years.
You are all amazing. KEEP FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT!

Thanks so much for your pledge!
Between bank donations and pledges we've raised $35,000 in 5 weeks. That's the good news.
The somewhat daunting news is that we have just 7 days left to raise another $20,000 - $3,000 per day!!!
And last week we took a leap of faith and filed our case on appeal before the deadline. So we are going to Court - the question is will we be able to pay our barrister! Peter and I aren't that keen on making the arguement ourselves (lol)
What would really REALLY help us is if everyone who has already pledged could reach just 1 or 2 (or 10) more people who might pledge or donate.
If you're willing to do that, the link to our PledgeMe page - Operation 'Stop the Bottling!' - is here: PLEASE SHARE ME!
Alternatively, in case anyone asks, our bank account details are: Aotearoa Water Action: 38 9019 0530141 00
Thanks so much for all your help so far - we're so grateful!
Niki and the team at AWA :)
