Hope From Lockdown

Project 2020-08-07 21:13:48 +1200

Hope from Lockdown is a 200 page historical collection of pictures and stories from Kiwis from Coromandel to Queenstown from March - early June 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in New Zealand.

Edited and produced by Abbie McKoy from Incremental Change Agency, and printed locally in Wellington, all proceeds from this campaign (above our production costs) will go to planting trees through the Taupo Swamp Restoration project In Plimmerton, Porirua through Friends of Taupo Swamp and Catchment.

We are so proud of what we have all achieved together through lockdown and that the seeds of our projects will provide trees for another. Thank you for being part of this journey with us!

Kaumātua Kamiria Mullen's Story

14/08/2020 at 8:05 PM

One of the most special moments of the Front Door Project - New Zealand (which inspired this book project) was being invited to take pictures of some of the Kaumātua of Ngāti Toa at Level 2. It was such an honour to hear their stories and the reflections they had about COVID19. This is a story shared by Kaumātua Kamiria Mullen.

“My mother was born in 1918 the year her Father, Koro Ngamate Tamati Pirikawau died at Waikanae in the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic.

His brother Te Puni Honiana Tamati Pirikawau and his wife Mei Morehu adopted my Mother Ngamate Tamati Pirikawau Mullen.

At Hongoeka Marae during this time Nanny Kami made puha soup and fed it to everyone who was sick at Hongoeka. Her actions saved the lives of many of the
sick and elderly at Hongoeka. Hongoeka people never forgot what she did. They had enormous respect for her caring ways and her cooking.

I believe puha and other foods are the best medicine for all of us. If it can beat the Spanish flu virus, why shouldn’t it beat COVID-19 too! Then I thought maybe I can improve on it and turn it into a super soup – my lockdown challenge.”

You can find this story and the recipe to Kaumātua Kamiria Mullen's Super Puha Soup in our new book - Hope from Lockdown.

What's inside - a story about Georgia Ingram

13/08/2020 at 9:11 PM

A sneak peak of one of our beautiful stories

This is Georgia Ingram one of the amazing people that took pictures in Meadowbank, Auckland. This spread features in our new book Hope from Lockdown and what she says is so relevant right now 💫

"This time will forever be discussed in history lessons throughout the world. I don’t think the enormity of it has quite sunk in yet, but the stark comparison to just how big of a complex global problem this is, to the simple solution to stay inside is quite fascinating.

I was locked down with my husband Blake, our three boys under four; Micah (3), Beauden (2) and Charlie (6 months). Lockdown was a mixture of gratitude for the health of my family and a safe place to isolate and absolutely tearing my hair out trying to keep up with the demands of three small humans. We had to put locks on both sides of our spare bedroom (now office) room so my husband could work and not be disturbed. Our 2 year old managed to break not one but two TV's over Level 4, but we also celebrated his second birthday, which was the most stress free birthday party we have had to date. And the bonus of no friends coming around? We got to eat the whole cake ourselves. There was a lot of playdough, lego, drawing, outside activities, walking, biking, outdoor learning (thank goodness for amazing weather).

I wrote this down as a poignant memory of our time and the effect it was having on our eldest, Micah, who is only 3. "Can we go see Grandma today?, Can I go see my cousins? Aunty Steph? Grandpa? Can we go to the park? I don’t want to play with this again. Is it a daycare day? Can I come with you to the supermarket? Can I play with Daddy? Don’t touch that! Come closer darling. Don't go up to that person. Stop fighting with your brother. Please don't go so close to them. Don't pick that up. Don't pat that dog. Don't get out of the push chair. Daddy’s working honey. Wash your hands.” What a confusing time for a 3 year old. I started to see these photos popping up of families on their front door step with their bubbles and I absolutely loved them and instantly knew I wanted to capture my community.

I documented over 100 families and their isolation crew over 3 weeks. It was insanely busy but so rewarding. I had a real soft spot for mothers who had babies over lockdown and couldn't have those precious newborn pictures taken. Being a mum and someone who treasures photos so much I would have been devastated if Charlie had been born a few months later and we missed out on these! So I prioritised these families and in many cases my pictures were their first photos as a complete family, it was so special. From cats on leashes, superheros, mums playing soccer in 6 inch heels, I saw it all and absolutely loved every minute.

Still being able to be creative (and sneak away from my boys for a few hours) really helped me stay sane and connected."

So s**t just hit the fan again... a little pep talk for today!

12/08/2020 at 10:33 AM

“So the shit just hit the fan!

Again...

For like the 20th time this week.

As wedding photographers, whose weddings were all cancelled due to COVID there was very little we could do but try to laugh and just enjoy the moment.

I definitely had to give myself several pep talks along the journey. This is the one I found myself repeating that I wanted to share…

Whether you're a small business owner, or a couple in the middle of planning your wedding, I want you to remember back to a time, probably not that long ago, when you had nothing. There was time when all the things you have currently built, planned, and organised were just a twinkle in your eye, a faraway dream.

It might feel like we are going through the Great Reset. But you've been here before; only this time you are armed with the wisdom and experience that you could've only dreamed of having back then.

You can do hard things! You've done hard things! and you'll continue to do hard things!

Yes, things are uncertain and yes, things will change, but we can't afford to dwell in the negativity of it. I refuse to let this shit rule my thoughts.

I've done a lot of work around my own mental health, and doing things well outside my comfort zone, and the main thing I've learned is that what you tell yourself on repeat, matters! And it matters even more in hard times.

"I have great coping skills. I have great coping skills. I have great coping skills." —this is my mantra today.

I wish I could hug you all right now, (but you know, social distancing). There is no denying that this is hard, and it's OK to sigh; "we're in it right now, and it's hard", But don't stop here.

You can't control the situation, but you can control your reaction, and what your telling yourself. Take a deep breath, hold your head up high, roll your shoulders back and repeat after me " You can do hard things!"
