LML Podcast, available on Spotify and iTunes, aims to destigmatise anxiety and depression and open up conversations around the ups and downs of mental health. We explore our own experiences and discuss how different areas of life have been impacted by, and had an impact on, our anxiety and depression.
We are Jess and Sav, two 22-year-olds who have both experienced anxiety and depression since high school. We are passionate about equipping young New Zealanders with the tools to deal with the ups and downs of life and we want to reassure them that they are not alone.
Currently, not only does the podcast not make any money, it actually costs us between $200-$250 each week. We both work jobs that pay just above minimum wage and each week we invest in the costs of production, studio hire, streaming platform fees, marketing and content creation. This doesn't take into account the time and effort we put into it, as well as the fact that Jess has started taking Monday's off work, and is therefore receiving one day's less income each week. She does this so she can meet with potential guests, stay on top of content creation and organise a whole lot of exciting stuff we have have coming up, all driven by the goal of helping young New Zealanders feel less alone in their struggles with their mental health.
We genuinely love what we are doing with LML, it is our passion project and we believe that it is so important, we will continue to do it no matter how much we raise or how much it is costing us, but every bit helps.
By pledging to LML Podcast you will be helping cover our costs and maybe even eventually enable us to work a few less hours at our other jobs... which will hopefully mean fewer late nights and stressful weekends. You will also help make it possible for us to reach other important guests and open up more discussions around mental health in New Zealand society.
In our Podcast, we talk openly about our experiences with our mental health because we believe that these conversations are not common enough in New Zealand society. We want young New Zealanders who might be struggling with their mental health to feel less alone.
Our podcast has been downloaded over 8000 times so far, has reached the top 5 in the NZ Health & Fitness podcasts chart and entered the top 80 in the NZ All Podcasts Chart. We have also received feedback like...
"I love hearing we all go through similar experiences (and) we don't even realise it's so normal!"
"It feels like two friends chatting about life which is so awesome... and when you speak about your experiences it's so relatable!".
We also have guests come on the podcast at least once a month (?), such as Dr Ashley Bloomfield, to discuss some of their own struggles and successes. This helps bring awareness to the fact that, no matter who someone is, or how confident or successful they may seem, everyone has their own ups and downs.
In New Zealand, there are very few ways to generate income through a podcast. Even episode sponsorships generate very little, if any, monetary contribution. We fund all production, development and marketing costs ourselves and heavily invest time and effort into the podcast. Alongside the podcast, we have other jobs, Sav in administration and Jess in marketing, to make sure we continue having enough money coming in to keep the podcast going. If we're being completely honest, it's exhausting. Trying to work enough to fund our passion project and have enough leftover to pay our bills. Very often we reach the end of each paycheck with less than $10 in our accounts. It sounds kind of sad but honestly, if we didn't need help we wouldn't be asking for it.
Even if you aren’t in a position to donate, we’d like to say a massive thank you for taking the time to read through this and get to know a bit more about us. Go check out the podcast by searching LML Podcast on Spotify or iTunes and please don't hesitate to contact us on Instagram or Facebook!

We are so grateful to have been featured in the Easbourne herald last month! We are also so grateful to everyone who has pledged so far. With the $1500 already pledged, we can continue production of the podcast for the next 2 months without it straining us financially as it has been. At this point we've invested over $5000 into the podcast so it's safe to say this will be a massive help for us! Please don't hesitate to share the PledeMe link with your family and friends.
