HARD EP

Project 2012-11-26 00:59:56 +1300

...because getting a project off the ground independently is HARD!  My band GIRL ON GIRL ACTION has been in action now for over a year and its time to record. We're working on an independent EP called HARD. Funding is needed for mixing, art, and videos by local artists once the recording stage is over.

HARD is a 4-5 song album which showcases original songs that outline the reality of being an independent artist. The possible songs on this are:

-About You (our new favourite: a song to remind us that it's "not all about you" and that there's a bigger picture view)

-LIVE (another new favourite: a song about living- despite things getting hard at times- what are you going to do? :) All you can do is live.)

-Cruel Winter Blues (a song about cancer, mental health and being cold in Dunedin.)

-No More Angels (a song about ego and how everyone wants a piece)

-Succubus (about the reality of the dating scene in Dunedin- or lack there of)

-Backyard Jam Man (a song which brings a bit of relief in comparison to the others-as its about togetherness through music)

-DOIN' IT (the conclusion- that we're going to keep doing it- making music and art- despite the HARD material which preludes this song.)

When these songs are finished being recorded- each has artistic concepts which need to be fulfilled visually by Dunedin artists. Our budget for recording these is $1000 a song for materials, equipment and the necessary professionals within a studio setting.

Visual concepts once a recording is funded include:

-body paint for 30-40 women who will be shot in typical Dunedin settings doing every day items such as window shopping, busking, drinking a coffee, etc. in the nude save for the realistic cloths painted upon their bodies. This concept accompanies the song Succubus as an exploration of subtle sexuality and the female dating game. This is not to be over sexualised -rather- the intention is to satirize these ideas in order to expose the hilarity and ridiculousness of the overall situation.  Also, by including images of Dunedin, a picture of our city is enabled- bringing together art, music, and well known Dunedin hot spots into one cauldron of Dunedin awesomeness.

-clay, plasticine, wax and taxidermy for DOIN IT and No More Angels

- Dunedin sculptors to create a cast of creatures embarking upon a journey of Dunedin's nature and wildlife i.e. the Botanical Gardens, the glowworm caves, Chingford Park, Mt. Cargill, Larnoch Castle, the Orokanui Wildlife sanctuary- and many, many more. There are so many of these spots to promote that this concept will have to extend to other songs in order to show as many beautiful Dunedin scenic displays as possible.

-Dunedin circus and fire performers to be employed/fed in order to capture the performing culture of Dunedin for BACKYARD JAM MAN. We'll be working with LED lights, fire toys, unicycles and stilts in order to show some of the best circus performing the country has to offer.

-a display of local Dunedin graffiti art through video montage.

Once recording is finished- we hope to reciprocate this support by providing sounds for them to make live and recorded performances to. The possibilities are endless.

WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?!

27/02/2013 at 9:37 PM

What happened to the last three months ay? All those hours of busking, gigging, working, being sick, being healthy, being stressed, having no internet and running all round town.... and all of a sudden we've made the target! With 33 hours to go! This past week has been a trying one- I apologize for not having more updates on here! This afternoon I hope to bombard you all with a few extra insights into what we've been up to lately.

A quick sum up of whats gone down in the past two weeks:

1- PANIA IS IN WELLINGTON!

Oh Yes, our bass goddess has moved on to master her craft in the double bass. SO PROUD! It's been hard without our husband Pania, but acquiring these skills are going to bring our sound to the NEXT LEVEL. You will not be disappointed with how tasty our bass lines are going to be. Hhhhmmmm... tasty bass.

2-Because my beautiful Cornflower was preoccupied with bass school- I employed the help of Natasha Carrasco to come with me to the tropical metropolis that is Waikaia so that we could play some tunes for the lovely Clement family during their daughter's wedding. THIS WAS A MOST EXCELLENT TIME- THANK YOU SO MUCH LINDA AND PAUL! We met them busking (see first or second update) at the Saturday Markets- they loved our sound and offered us a weekend away. There was delicious Pinot Gris and STEVIE RICE! Sax, good food and great people made for a most memorable time. Thank you so much again- blown away!

4- We had our Market Stall fundraiser! I've got a slideshow to put up- but lack of internet has prevented me from posting the photos we've taken- curses! There's cross dressing, brightly coloured body suits, glam, retro, vintage- gah! Will try to have it up after work today. We didn't make as much as we thought we would-only raised $200- I forget about how tight things can be when you're a student! But $200 is STILL awesome. For some of the gems that werent sold, I will put up photos on facebook in case anyone wants them.

5- Kitchen recordings of SOUL SISTER JAM night were made! These are pretty special as they feature our very own Erin Kohey- and her other girl band Soul Diva. WIll also get these up!

There's all kinds of other niggly things going down at the VajMahal- lack of internet being the most stressing! However, we've found that being disconnected from technology has enabled us all to take a moment- read a few chapters of a book or get some knitting done instead of obsessing over internet projects or research. Ah! Silver Linings!

Anywho- I'm off to work! Thank you all for the support- it's been all kinds of crazy goodness! WAtch this space for a room jam of Backyard Jam Man :)

Wow- 15 days left and half way there... but I have a good feeling about this.  Just pledged the $1000 we worked HARD to raise- but we've got another 25000 to go! Here's a song along with some monkey faces and funny dance moves to entice ya'll to spread the word :) Thanks for your support!

Enjoy!

WHOA! ONLY 26 DAYS TO GO!

04/02/2013 at 3:41 AM

WOW! Time goes by fast when you be workn ladies like us! Where is the year going- already?!?! These past two weeks have been crazy! First and foremost, a huge shout out to an extremely inspiring lady: Jessica Brough- this lady changed my life during our trip to Martinborough. Never have I met a woman as strong, as wise , or as clear seeing as this remarkable  person. LIVE LIKE IT'S YOUR LAST ladies and gentlemen! Like Jess did. Love, light and peace to her and her family.

As far as our project is going, we’ve raised another $540 dollars from busking, gigs and playing with the River Jesters! Check it out!

Raised: $300 –Thanks RatBags! We look forward to playing again! And thanks Michael for capturing the photo that proves we were there :)

Raised: $60 –cheers to the River Jesters for putting this event on, to Jasmine for getting this photo and to Pania for contributing her share J

Between another busk and a jam at Brew Bar’s Sunday Sessions, we were able to raise another $180. Add this to our current total and we’re up to $1975… and we’ve only got TWENTY SIX DAYS to reach our goal! $3025 worth of pledges or we don’t get ANY of it!

Let’s get our album on the way guys-we’re nearly there! Your continued support is invaluable! Pass on the word!  It’d be a shame for all this hard work to NOT result in an album-let’s make some music-ALBUM ON THE WAY!!!

Saturday Busking: 38 DAYS LEFT!

23/01/2013 at 2:55 AM

You really get an appreciation for our town’s beauty when you wake up on a Saturday morning to sun and clear skies. It was perfect weather to check out the market so Pania, the double bass and I hopped into the GOGAmobile and headed to the railway station for some sweet free range eggs, organic fruit and vegetables and to fund raise for our album busking styles.

                                      GOGA 19th January, 2012

It was hard going at 8AM on a Saturday morning but FAT CAT COFFEE helped to make our sacrificed sleep in a worthwhile endeavor- THANK YOU HANNAH TWIG! You are a goddess. We were also nourished by the people with the AWESOME cherry stand. Best bag of cherries ever tasted. Miss not this cherry season my friends! They are truly divine.

Larry, Pania's father was there to help with gear, jam and take photos :) Here's a wee gem of our Cornflower and her life partner:

Ah! a match made in heaven.

... and of course monkeyface:

It was great having Larry with us! Pania had to head off to her day job after two hours of busking, so he had a hoon on my Martin while we packed up the double bass. I don't think anyone who saw him play will ever forget his "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road" song: kids danced, parents laughed, children looked terrified... but they loved it. Thanks Larry for all the MANpower, support and inspiration! Next project: children's songs? :) more on that in the future.

After 2 and a half hours or so of busking, we raised $100 from market goers for this project. A hundred dollars closer guys! Keep an eye out for us on street corners over the next 38 days!!! We'll be playing every Saturday market as well- sacrifice your Saturday morning sleep in-come on down and check out how rad this event is and how cranking the local farmers and small business owners really are! Coffee! Cherries! BACON BUTTIES! (to the Bacon Butty man: wherever you may be... you have made our Larry a very happy man).

Also, if you're in the Dunedin area, we're playing in the Octagon tomorrow night at Ratbags from 9pm-midnight. Get the flatties out and about! Grab your mom and the coog from next door! Let's make a night of it!

See you before you know it!

DAY ONE: Extreme Motivation! New songs on the make!!!!

08/01/2013 at 3:45 AM

It's been just over 24 hours and the support so far has been AMAZING! Thank you. We only hope to do you all proud!

In anticipation for the big recording times, my brain has been chiseling away at more recent songs... and naughtily, has been writing new ones... I don't know where they've been coming from! But more on that later :)

"ABOUT YOU" and "LIVE" are jazzier pop songs that we've been working on and the arrival of a new loop pedal has prompted much in the way of percussion possibilities. These two songs have been chosen as the most suitable for a studio recording, but also, we're hoping to get good enough with our pedal percussion to attempt a live recording.

Visual concepts accompanying these songs:

-Live footage of us in front of our favourite Dunedin graphitti sites. There is a lot of incredible public art here that needs to be exposed! This we're hoping to do in conjunction with the live recording of "LIVE"- however, don't want to count those eggs yet-I might not have the chops to execute it well enough :)

-stop animation/clay/unknown medium project for "ABOUT YOU". I'd like to have an array of "cry wolf" characters-but we're still developing the characters :) Once we're working with proper visual artists it'll be easier to outline.

Thanks again for the support- we needed this surge of motivation! Watch this space, spread the word, and wait as patiently as you can :) looks like we're going to have some music for you before you know it!
