Dance 2020 Xperience : For Better Livelihoods Of Young Stars In The Pearl Of Africa.

I, Antonio Bukhar, will be holding a series of my popular Afro-fusion and dancehall workshops in different cities around New Zealand, including Auckland, Dunedin, Wellington and possibly Queenstown.

The vision is to reunite with the communities I have built and engaged with, in New Zealand over the past 3 years to share my passion for dance and use profits to help disadvantaged kids in Uganda.  One of my 2020 goals is to link the communities that appreciate my work together with the environment that has shaped my practice.

I am teaming up with the Tuzuule Art Project (TAP) to make this happen. TAP is a charity organization that uses arts to help out kids in urgent need such as the very- poor, street kids and orphaned young people. I chose this organization because I know first hand their story and vision; there are no ‘in-betweeners’. Whatever aid big or small goes directly to the beneficiaries.

Depending on how much money raised, my support could go from, providing basic needs such as food; scholastic and artistic materials to school fees contributions.

I have done numerous projects that promote positive social change in disadvantaged communities including the co-founding of the Breakdance Project Uganda. The relatable program I have done before is the Fun-day Community experience in Makerere Kivulu, a slum in Kampala City. Through Arts 2 Hearts School outreaches in Germany, we used a great portion of our incomes to provide a memorable Christmas day for 100s of poor orphaned and street kids in Uganda. Here is the link for visual impressions https://vimeo.com/180895891

The plan is to travel to New Zealand for 4 weeks, offering intensive dance workshops of an average of 1 hour and a half each at a fair rate between $10 to $20 depending on the number of workshops one attends. The intention is to stay a week in each city providing a minimum of 4 classes per city. After which I will return home in Uganda and use the profits to help kids at Tuzuule Art Project. The minimum is $6000 to manage the flights, living expenses, and project costs. However, the more money I can raise the more impact we can make.

In 2017 received the Pina Bausch Fellowship at the University of Auckland, to search for personal artistic development as a dancer as well as explore the dialogue and exchange with grounded theory on dance technique and community dance methods. That marked the beginning of my relationship with New Zealand. In 2018 I returned to New Zealand to work at the same University as a guest choreographer while collaborating with numerous organizations. In 2019 I was awarded the Caroline Plummer fellowship of community dance in Dunedin, at the University of Otago. My project sought to build and bridge communities using dance as the tool to zoom into the topics of ‘Individuality’ and ‘Commonality’ amongst people, as well as breaking down barriers between community dance practice and academia.
