Empowered Activism Wānanga Scholarship Fund

Project 2019-11-27 19:45:37 +1300

The scholarship fund has been set up to ensure that anyone who has the fire and passion to raise awareness and make change in our world would be supported to do so, regardless of financial constraints.

We have made ticket prices as cheap as possible while providing a minimal koha for facilitators. The ticket price of $800 may still not be financially accessible for many people, as well as travel costs to get to Golden Bay. As such we have created this scholarship fund to ensure that those attending Empowered Activism are representative of our diverse communities, representing a variety of backgrounds (age, ethnicity, gender, region etc.). This means the funds gathered from this campaign will be used to support a variety of participants from across Aotearoa who otherwise would not be able to afford the training.  We do not want there to be any financial barriers for people wishing to attend this training.

Empowered Activism Training

EA Wānanga is seeking to reach a wide range of people from across Aotearoa,  re-framing activism to include not just our front line resistors, but anyone with a passion for making change - from teachers to lawyers to artists to gardeners. We do this by focusing on the concept of regenerative activism. Regenerative activism explores how we might organise in ways that go beyond sustainability to renew and revitalise ourselves and our communities. We ask the question: te kunenga ki te aumangea [how to make change while creating personal and collective resilience]

The Kaupapa

Tools and skills for Regenerative Activism:

Exploring how to organise in ways that go beyond sustainability to renew and revitalise ourselves and others

  • Mauri ora, Hauora - Honouring personal life source and nourishing total wellbeing
  • Mahi Tahi,  Whanaungatanga - Collaboration and deep connection to build and strengthen networks and communities
  • Kaitiakitanga: Living in thriving relationships with social and ecological systems

As our future becomes increasingly complex and uncertain, facing the injustices and hardships of our world can have a profound mental and physical impact. People are facing burnout, fear, anxiety and paralysis. We are seeing many young people rise up this year eager to make change, particularly around issues of ecosystem destruction and climate change. We want to support people like this to make change in their communities, empower them to see their own strengths and teach them how to collaborate effectively.

Where will the money go?

While we have made ticket prices as cheap as possible, the ticket price of $800 may still not be financially accessible for many people, including travel costs to get to Golden Bay. This funding would support eight people to attend the training on part or full scholarship, including a contribution towards travel costs.

Those eight people would be selected based on a needs assessment (see below). They will be invited to profile their experience of the wānanga online, to share their reflections on the course and the impact the course has had on them and their form of activism.

Scholarship Need assessment

Scholarships will be allocated based on:

  • Financial constraints
  • People who are wanting to make change in Aotearoa / New Zealand
  • A diversity in age, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, background, profession, experience, location, type of activism
  • People who will take the learnings and apply them in their communities
  • People prepared to go deep on inner work
  • People who can commit to the whole time
  • A ‘rainbow’ of activism with a  range of ways of bringing about change  (e.g. front line, strategy, healers, policy advocates, artists,  communications, grass roots, global)

Testimonials from Empowered Activism 2019

“The course took me deep into the core of the grief, turmoil and confusion to grow stronger in power, purpose and compassion. The varying elements are all so perfectly interwoven into a new paradigm of activism that I had been craving, that the world calls for. The connections, intentions, visions and co-creations here are potent seeds of activated potential that shall now be sprouting from between the crack of the old world. Never before have I been so excited to have the opportunity of being alive and activated in this time of great turning. The energy, intention and vision we carry away from here is already creating profound ripples.”

“Empowered Activism is full immersion in the breadth, depth of what is meant to be an activist. A balance of self-care, autonomy, progressive engagement, solidarity and networking. Awesome!”

“A very intensive course, very emotionally loaded, that makes you reflect on what is truly important in your life and that gives you tools to take action and live in line with your values”

"It was a huge experience of self growth and community cohesion. More than I could have ever expected"

“If you are wondering how to react to the ecological crisis of our age and the existential challenge facing civilisation - this week-long course hosted by a stunning eco-community and taught by a range of original, embodied thinkers who are leaders in their field, is the answer. Prepare for challenge, community, play, learning, teaching; while developing as a person, an activist and a co-creator”

“Learning via living in community, dialling down on privilege awareness and acting from a place of wholeness"
