About

The Perfection Of Sound – The Story Of The Maxwell Fernie Organ

Project 2019-10-20 15:30:30 +1300

The Maxwell Fernie Trust, set up in his memory and run by his family, is in the final stages of producing a high-quality, limited edition book due to be released in November 2019.

Using the collected correspondence of the parish priest, the organ builders, pipe makers and Maxwell Fernie himself, the book describes how the revolutionary Fernie organ in Wellington was brought to life from a flat in Pimlico, London in the 1950s.

However, as a strictly limited edition print run, only half of the budget will be met by actual book sales, so we have set up this PledgeMe appeal, to complete the budget ensuring a book for the ages, with a high-quality finish – heavy stock, hard-cover, foil blocked canvas-wrapped spine. All funds will go exclusively towards final production of the book.

Maxwell Fernie is remembered for his lifelong achievements in music and in particular for his original approach and influence on organ performance and choral singing in New Zealand – bringing passion and excitement to the music from the 1930’s until the end of his life in 1999.  Even today 20 years after his death, Maxwell Fernie is well-remembered as an organist extraordinaire, teacher, conductor, and authority on Gregorian chant, sixteenth century Polyphony, organ construction and tonal design.

The book, very much like the organ, has been a labour of love over many years, designed to serve as a historical record rather than a money-making venture (which it definitely isn't!).

Pledged moneys will help offset costs.
