Helping ManaiaSAFE Forestry School Create Social Impact

Project 2019-09-05 13:51:42 +1200

Likened to a bird sitting on one’s shoulder, in Maori mythology the manaia is a supernatural creature and guardian protector over one’s spirit

Our business

Train Me Quality Services Limited trading as ManaiaSAFE Forestry School is a start-up social enterprise that has been actively trading as a training provider since October 2018. We are in the process of applying to NZQA for registration as a Private Training Establishment. We grow people to improve their life chances by using things like giving up drugs, achieving a NZQA recognised forestry qualification, and gaining employment in the forestry sector as tangible goals to support the personal growth journey.

Through our logging training crew servicing a real harvesting contract, we are able to give trainees a hands-on real-world learning experience under strict supervision from our highly experienced Mentors. At the same time we are able to generate harvesting contract revenue to help meet our operating costs.

Because logging is where we make money, and training is where we spend money, we have to leverage off economies of scale and operational efficiencies in order to become financially viable so that we can deliver social impact sustainably. In other words, we need to increase the number of training crews in order to support the training arm of our business as well as meeting the rising demand for our training services.

We are at a stage of growth whereby we are ready to set-up a second training crew. We have secured a 3-year harvesting contract worth over $6 million, and we have men and machines on standby.

We are reaching out to New Zealanders through PledgeMe for a leg up by helping us meet some of the front-end costs of setting up our second training crew so we can scale-up our social impact.

Our people

Driven by the vision of saving lives, building futures and delivering skills for foresters, company directors Henry Koia, Steve Beach, Christine Beach, Te Horipo Karaitiana and Peter Cross are all passionate about giving others hope and a job through the provision of quality vocational education and training. In addition to our directors, we have 8 full time workers/Mentors on the payroll. Henry, Steve and Christine fill full-time management roles on an unpaid basis.

Meet a Mentor

Our Mentors are highly experienced and highly valued forestry professionals and are the key to the effective delivery of the practical component of our training. Tene Hicks shares his experience as a ManaiaSAFE Forestry School Mentor.

Tene

Kia ora. My name is Tene Hicks and I am currently the Tree Felling Mentor for ManaiaSAFE Forestry School. I am 40 years old and have worked in the forest industry since 1996. Although the industry has helped provide for many families through sustainable work, it has also been the centre of a hell of a lot of tragedy, grief and pain. After suffering my own personal loss within my wider whanau, I felt compelled to apply for a Mentor position with the hope of making some kind of difference, in what can be a very unforgiving industry. We cannot stop people from entering a career in the logging industry, but with the correct training we can show them that through proactive involvement we are committed to the prevention of loss. Being a part of the ManaiaSAFE Forestry School has been one of the most rewarding things I have done throughout my career. Along with a different challenge I have also found an opportunity to develop myself as a well-rounded professional logger.

Our social impact

The social impact we seek to create is growing people to improve their life chances. Our first female graduate of our Level 3 NZ Certificate in Forest Harvesting Operations training programme Tuihana Nikora-Whiting sums up the impact that our kaupapa can have on people.

Before I did this, I was in the pits really. It has uplifted me so much that I just want to keep going and going. I only got about 24 credits at school and this is the first time in my life I have been really proud of myself. My parents and my kids came to my graduation. My grandfather worked for DoC and I knew doing this would make him proud of me.

Our expansion strategy

Our aim is to establish 6 training crews on the East Coast between Te Araroa and Wairoa by the close of 2020. Not only will this create more jobs, but more importantly, it will improve access to our training services for those people who live in remote communities in a region identified as one of New Zealand’s most economically deprived. Through our expansion strategy we will be able to take the training to where the people and plantations are.

Your help

Your help through a donation will help us meet the costs associated with setting-up a second training crew so that the crew is in a position to begin servicing the harvesting contract. These costs include things like paying Mentor wages, fuel, vehicle lease costs, and safety equipment such as PPE to keep our people safe. We need to grow our School in order to become financially viable and able to continue to do what we do for people like Tuihana on a sustainable basis.

In remembrance of Steve Maynard

Before we go, we would like to acknowledge with great sadness Steve Maynard’s invaluable contribution to the ManaiaSAFE Forestry School kaupapa. Steve was our Foreman and Mentor who recently passed away suddenly. An industry awarded forestry professional with a huge career ahead of him, he will be sorely missed by all.
