Behind The Headset - A Documentary

Project 2019-07-26 12:25:42 +1200

Amelia Noyes and Rose Hunt are currently in their third and final year of university, studying a Bachelor of Communication Studies – majoring in Television and Screen Production at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). For their final assignment, they would like to take you on a journey “Behind The Headset”, in order to get to know the faceless phone counsellors of New Zealand’s helplines. Working together as director and producer, they both believe in the need to spread awareness of the efforts of paid and voluntary Kiwis for those who call our nationwide helplines.

This idea was inspired by Amelia’s volunteering role played as a Kidsline Buddy and now, a member of the Kidsline Resource Team. Under this role, she has been able to talk to many young New Zealanders between the ages of 5-18 and help support them when they’re struggling.

Our country is facing a mental health crisis. 668 kiwis took their own lives in 2017/18 (NZ Herald, 2018). Nearly half of New Zealanders will live with mental health problems at some point of their lives, with one in five New Zealanders experiencing mental health issues (Health and Disability Commissioner, n.d). It has become common for New Zealanders to have mental health struggles, particularly young people. One in seven young people will experience a major depressive disorder before they turn 24. These statistics are the reason why Amelia and Rose are passionate about making a documentary.

Behind the Headset’ is a short documentary, aiming to give an insight into the world of phone counselling. It will feature two representatives from New Zealand helplines, Kidsline and Youthline, who aim to reduce these said statistics by offering free phone counselling to our young people. Sometimes the idea of talking to a stranger about your problems can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Amelia and Rose want to give their audience of 15 to 24-year-olds an understanding of New Zealand’s helplines for youth, and potentially give them access to these resources for help if needed.

Rose and Amelia intend to support their interviews with the phone counsellors with a dramatised phone counselling call, hoping to inspire a discussion about something that is not talked about enough in our country. This is an important story that Amelia and Rose want to share and call for justice.

They have set a funding target of $948. Funding will go towards set design, catering, travel and remuneration of actors and interviewees. Rose and Amelia would both like this film to be competition and festival-worthy so that they can share this story with a much wider audience, as well as succeeding in their final assessment. A successful PledgeMe campaign would enable them to achieve this.

Thank you very much in advance for your generosity.
